Charlie Daniels to Join the Grand Ole OpryOur friend Charlie Daniels has been asked to become a member of the legendary Grand Ole Opry. GRITZ correspondent Rick Broyles was in attendence last night, November 20, during Danielsí annual Christmas For Kids benefit show at the Ryman Auditorium when Opry member Martina McBride delivered the surprise Opry invitation.

According to Broyles, McBride walked on stage with what appeared to be a Christmas gift for Daniels, she opened the small box she was holding to reveal a Christmas card reading:

"Peace, joy, love, and wishes fulfilled.
These are the timeless treasures of Christmas.
Thank you, Charlie, for all you've done to make Christmas wishes come true for thousands of children through the years.
Now it's time to make a wish come true for you, too.
You're officially invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Merry Christmas!"

Daniels was overcome with emotion.

"I can not even begin to tell you folks...this is very emotional for me," said Daniels. "I never ever in my wildest dreams when I came to Nashville with my precious wife and son dreamed that this would happen. To think that now my name will be added along with all these great country artists. Thank you."

Charlie will be officially inducted into the Opry during an Opry at the Ryman performance later this winter.

Also, Charlie's new album of duets called "Dueces" is some of his best work in years. Despite room being made for many stars, Charlie keeps the guitars blazing on here. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" with Vince doesn't do a lot for me, and neither does "Like A Rolling Stone" with Darius Rucker. And, "Long Haired Country Boy" has been done enough over the years.

But, "Maggie's Farm" done bluegrass style with Earl Scruggs and sons Randy and Gary is great, so is the bluegrass mountain sounds of "Daddy's Old Fiddle" with Dolly Parton once again remembering her mountain roots, "Evangeline" with the top-notch award-winning bluegrass outfit the Del McCoury band is hot, and "Jammin' For Stevie" is a wonderful new instrumetnal that gives tribute to MR. Vaughan with guitars smoking, including Brad Paisley's who guests on the cut. There is also a hell of a beer drinking honky tonk number, a song with Marty Stuart called "God Save Us All From Religion", that rips into the excesses of organized religion, much along the lines of Charlie's "New Pharisees" song on his Steel Witness album.

quote:

While the bevy of big names suggests the respect Daniels gets across genre lines throughout the music industry, DEUCES is hardly a retrospective tribute, and it kicks up as much dust as any release in his catalog.

1. What'd I Say - (with Travis Tritt)
2. Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours - (with Bonnie Bramlett)
3. Jackson - (with Gretchen Wilson)
4. Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, The - (with Vince Gill)
5. Maggie's Farm - (with Earl Scruggs/Randy Scruggs/Gary Scruggs)
6. Daddy's Old Fiddle - (with Dolly Parton)
7. Like a Rolling Stone - (with Darius Rucker)
8. Evangeline - (with The Del McCoury Band)
9. Let It Be Me - (with Brenda Lee)
10. Long Haired Country Boy - (with Brooks & Dunn)
11. God Save Us All From Religion - (with Marty Stewart)

Very cool! It appears in the picture that he was very moved and surprised.

I love all his classic songs and with the long history, this is deserving for him! He looks like he dropped some weight in that picture.

Congrats to Charlie!!

Well, someone unknowingly started another thread on this and I responded to it, since I had not seen this one either.

Here is that response of mine...

"Awesome! Fantastic! Wonderful!

Congrats to Charlie Daniels. One of the 1st I got into "back in the day" after the ABB and Marshall Tucker. That lineup he had around 74/75 was incredible. He was clearly influenced by the ABB during that time. The music was very similar for a while.

Regarding Nashville, I'm not real big on that industry there. As one who loves "real" country music, I sometimes wonder whether Nashville is more trying to promote country music or ruin country music.

But still...being inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry is still a HUGE honor, imo.

Way to go, Charlie!

"D""

I've never met Charlie but he always seemed like a super nice guy. Very very happy for him!

And the fun didn't stop there!!! Afterwards George W. Bush invited Charlie to Bagdad to shoot Iraqis. Quoted Charlie, "It really doesn't get any better than this."

I met Charlie about 10 years ago at Walnut Creek in Raleigh. I was in the back stage in the area and heard somebody come "clomping" down the wooden stairs at the stage entrance area. I turn around and its Charlie. He stuck out his hand and greeted me with a big old "how you doing young man?" Very very nice guy.
