Can't say who told me, but they said Derek Trucks Band will be opening for Santana for one month during his tour next year!! Trust me when I say the person who told me would know this for a fact.

I have also been told that this is quite likely also. I didn't get details on how long it would last though so maybe only some lucky cities will get a bonus.

Based on that recent Jam Base interview with Carlos, this is not surprising and is absolutely fantastic news!!! I've been waiting for Carlos' "victory lap tours" to end for years now so I can see him get back to some serious improv stuff again. Gotta believe having Derek join the tour plays some part in that, as well....

I sure hope that tour comes my way. I heard just the briefest of rumors about a year ago . . . something about Carlos "saying he wanted to work with Derek." Just that little nugget was enough to get my imagination into high gear. Man I'd love to see a return to the early 70's exploratory stuff . . . Derek would fit right in on that, IMO.

Angel of Sunlight, Song of the Wind, The Life Divine, Incident at Neshabur, stuff like that - if that's too ambitious, I'll take a Europa or Samba Pa Ti.

Carlos Santana has been saying for quite some time that he would like to do some work with Derek. Hopefully after this tour, Carlos and Derek can get together and do some recording. Certainly Derek is the kind of player, who could put "some fire" under Carlos. in much of the same way, that Duane put "a fire" under Eric Clapton. Instead of Derek and the Dominos, we might get Carlos and the Coltranes.

This is a nice combo and it makes perfect sense now that I think of it. I like it.

I would not be suprised to see ABB and Santana to co-bill some shows as well.

That would even be a better combo having DTB, Santana and The ABB all on the same bill.

Now for the ultimate question. Who would close??????

ooooo - would love for this to happen! I've always thought that Derek and Carlos playing together would be remarkable...somehow they have a similar spirituality that comes through in their music (and both with a fondness for Coltrane ) Hope this plays somewhere in my extended neighborhood!

That would be awesome Droog, but somehow I doubt you will get that. Ever since the 'Supernatural' album came out, Santana shows have become quite predictable with all the comercial hits from the special guest albums along with Black Magic Woman and Oya Como Va FOR THE ZILLIONTH TIME. When I first started seeing Santana in the early 90s his shows were varried and there was lots of amazing jamming going on. Since those dredded special guest albums came out his shows have changed. I saw him twice in the last six years and the shows were almost the same with much less jamming. I'm glad for Carlos that he got some of the comercial success that he deserves, but I think he should go back to his earlier jamming music. Enough of the fluff already. Derek might just be the perfect man to inspire Carlos back in that direction.

That's what I'm hoping, brother. As soon as it's official, I'm going to start putting together setlists and mailing them to both of them.

1. Europa>Sahib Teri Bandi
2. Let us Go Into the House of the Lord>Joyful Noise
. . .

Encore: My Favorite Things (the album, not the song)

How's that?!

Seriously, I know what you're saying, but a fella can hope, can't he? On the other hand, both have played Naima and Afro Blue, In a Silent Way, and probably a few others that I can't think of or am not aware of. With that sort of a common ground, I can't see them collaborating at any level and producing "or else forget about it" or anything in that vein.

I would love for them to play "Eyesight To the Blind" like Carlos and Clapton did on his Crossroads 2 box set. That songs smokes on there and those two could rip it up!!!

Always thought a ABB / Santana Double would be a killer lineup which would probably draw pretty well too. They are very similar ( well back in the old days anyway ) and the collaborations are endless. Just wish Carlos would drop that schmaltzy crap that hes been doing and get back to that great improvisational jamming he was known for. ( check ouy the fillmore 68 album to see what I mean). I guess that other stuff sells but I sure would like to see him getback to basics. Hell, Claptons been doing it for the last few years, if he can do it , anyone can. Peace.
