Wott a crazy world

I saw on the news a thirteen year old girl was given detention for hugging friends at her school.
This was a violation of the schools ban on Public displays of affection.

The girl was somewhat confused about the policy because of the schools anti-drug campaign
"Hugs not Drugs" which seem to encourage hugging.

she said "On one hand they are saying no hugging and in another program they are telling us to hug?"

Wott's a girl supposed to do?

It's a wacky world.

I think 13 year old kids hugging each other is fine, nothing wrong with friendly huggin,
It's not like they were making out.

The principal was a real prude "You have to put a stop to this somewhere", Like the girls
were about to engage in lesbian sex.

I guess the Principal is doing drugs rather than hugs.

This is sad. A lot of schools (especially middle and high schools) are instigating these 'no physical touching' policies. While the main intent was to discourage or eliminate erotic or abusive touching they have extended it to all forms of physical contact so these innocent displays like an arm across a shoulder or holding hands are outlawed. I'm glad I grew up when I did. I'm glad my kids are grown and I don't have to worry about being called in to school for some simple sign of affection on my child's part. It's a slippery slope - yes, discouraging erotic and abusive behaviour in the classroom or halls makes sense and is a good thing but at the price of innocent human interactions?

Wott a crazy world is right -- the principal sounds like she kneels at the altar of Beulah Ballbreaker (gym teacher in Porky's)

I read about this. The girl didn't really hug her friend, she just threw her arm around her friends shoulder.
That's how her mom described it, Otie, but she was trying to minimize the "offense." On the news yesterday (I think the girl's from Mascoutah, which is in Illinois but way SW by St. Louis), I saw the girl demonstrate her hugging technique on her sister. She was standing at her sister's left side and did put her right arm around her sister's back to squeeze her far shoulder. But then she also put her left arm all the way around the front to that shoulder, making a full-circle embrace, her front to her sister's side.

Anyway, dopey detention. The rule is against "public displays of affection," which I suppose is supposed to keep middle-school BFs and GFs from making out behind hallway locker doors between classes. But with the principal's broad interpretive authority, I guess the rule could include smiles and a cheerful "Hello," too.

apropos of nothing

"Hugs not Drugs"---I believe that was originally coined by Jesse "not me" Jackson...but it got turned around somewhat by....ya'll remember Jocelyn Elders, Clinton's Surgeon General. She had stated publicly that the reason many women were in prostitution was their need for money for their addictions, ie., drugs. So, in response, I turned the JJ phrase to "Drugs not Hugs"

I suppose there should be a ban on all contact sports now...I mean we can't have football players having any body contact with tackles....they might end up laying on top of some guys and start thinking erotic thoughts. That could also go for basketball I'm thinking since there is a degree of contact in that sport. Wrestling....definitely out...boxing...oh man, someone into S&M might get inappropriately arroused. And I don't think mothers should even hold their babies....that's where all that sex stuff starts....babies likeing to be held grow up to be people who like to hug and we don't need that!!!

Parents, school resolve hugging dispute
Tue Nov 13, 6:34 AM ET

MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Maybe they hugged it out: school officials resolved their dispute with the parents of a 13-year-old girl given detention for hugging her friends.

Melissa and Dean Coulter met with officials of the Mascoutah School District 19 to discuss the two detentions given their daughter, Megan, for hugging friends goodbye for the weekend. School officials said the eighth-grader violated a policy banning public displays of affection.

"Our whole purpose of the meeting was to get them to talk to us and discuss what changes needed to be made and if [the policy] could be improved," Dean Coulter said. "We scheduled it because we figured it was the right thing to do."

Her parents told her to serve the detentions to avoid getting into more trouble, and had planned to take the issue before the Board of Education at its meeting Thursday. Superintendent Sam McGowen said in a statement Monday that the Coulters had withdrawn their request to speak at the meeting, and decided instead to meet with administrators. "I'm grateful they sought this meeting and we could have a level of discussion that helps us both understand each other's concerns more clearly," McGowen stated.

He said he and Assistant Superintendent Terry Gibbons met with the Coulters on Friday and discussed the policy that led to the detentions. "We told them that we reviewed it on an annual basis and that's where we left it," he said.

Coulter said McGowen was very receptive during the meeting, and that the family is satisfied with the district's promise to at least look into revising the policy. "I just feel like we've accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, and that was for them to talk to us," he said.

{This leaves me very unsatisfied. Megan still had to serve her detentions. The policy's wording has neither been modified nor even reexamined as applied to her particular case. Sounds like a win-win for the school and its bad decision, lose-lose for the Coulters, despite Mr. Coulter's statement in the last paragraph above.

In anticipation of a highly fruitful district review of the policy, let's start to sort out the good from the bad public displays of affection for all concerned:

Bad

Public display of affection involving physical contact.

Good

Public display of affection involving no physical contact.

Bad

Public display of affection involving a financial transaction.

Bad

Regulations regarding the public display of affection pertain not just to all Mascoutah School District 19 property but also the property of other school districts during school-sanctioned extracurricular activities.

Bad

Regulations regarding the public display of affection on school property pertain to all structures and grounds owned by Mascoutah School District 19, even to areas sometimes considered private, such as the teachers' lounge;
and to all persons on school property, such as Mrs. _____ and overdeveloped 13-year-olds.

Teachers are required to post the following health & safety poster and interpretive key in their classrooms

Row 1: Good, good, good, good, good
Row 2: Good, bad, good, bad, unclear but probably bad
Row 3: Very bad, good, good, good but be careful
Row 4: Good, good, technically good but symbolically very bad
Row 5: Good but be very, very careful; uht!--there you did it: very bad; good; good; good

At work or at school, keep your hands to yourself. If she wants to fraternize with the kid outside of school how they are when they are at each other's homes is up to them as friends. In public places, it's not appropriate.

I'm a hugger. It's a medically proven fact that hugging someone is beneficial. If someone has a rough day, I hug. When I leave someone, male or female, I hug them goodbye. When my children or grandchildren come around, I hug. I don't hug strangers....but should one be in distress, I will put an arm over his or her shoulders should the occassion call for it. Geeze....arrest me if you will, but I would hug the policeman AND the judge given the chance....if they are so far wrong they can't see the need for compassion, they need a good hug!
