Hey everyone,
I may have missed a thread as I haven't been on in ages, but I wanted to post about the Van Morrison concert I attended Friday night at the United Palace in uptown Manhattan.

VERY NICE SHOW.

He can still belt it out, deliver it soft, and everything in between. He played lots of sax and harmonica and just generally put on a good show. He had a nice band around him too....some fine players.

He opened with Did you get healed? ala the Night in SF album of '94. His voice really almost sounded like it did it did 15-20m years ago. He's maintained it well.

He did a shorter set than I was hoping for, but no complaints. Full of nice moments including a really strong Help Me with lots of solos from the band. The whole show was a lot of vintage Van stuff....using that voice like an instrument. Everything so in synch. with the music and the instrumental interludes perfectly timed. He is quite the band leader.

I was a bit disappointed in the encore which contained Gloria and Brown Eyed-Girl, good songs, but a bit of a let down after the rest of the show. But I guess he doesn't do many concerts, so the fans like to hear those songs.

Anyway, my wife and I really enjoyed the show. And it was my first time at the United Palace (Broadway and 175th), which is a great old theater for a show; kind of like the Beacon, but in better condition.

I know some of you have posted some disappointed reviews in the past, but if you like what Van is all about musically, go see him when you get a chance. Still doing his thing.

I love Van...imo he is the King of Soul and such a prolific, quality writer....

I saw him once in N.Ireland when he played with Them. seems so long ago... I guess he's earned the chance to do short shows these days, none of us getting any younger.

love, love. love his work.

Van for me is the best consistently great singer/songwriter/musician over the past 40+ years. I have every commercial CD he's done except one and an absolute ton of Van live shows and video, the most in my collection and that is saying something....it takes up a lot of space.

What a prolific writer...I'd be curious to know how many songs Van has written.

His last really great shows where he channeled his muse was in 2002. He seems to be a little more inspired again lately though after becoming a father again twice in the past year or so. In spite of losing some edge, Van tours like crazy, just not that much in the US.

Van Is The Man.

Hey Denza,
How's it going brother? Speaking of Van, you have certainly turned me on to some great Van Morrison.

Judy,

Please share your memories of seeing Them...so long ago.

Van is indeed, the Man. There is not another artist out there who has touched my soul the way Van Morrison has.

Denza and I have had a friendly competition going on with collecting the entire Van commercial collection this year... needless to say, he's ahead of me! I need 4 more.

Denza needs one and Libby needs four. Well what are you both waiting for?

Saw Van this summer and it was a great show with a huge crowd. Perhaps 35000-45000 people which seemed to please him. Played a show where he did lots of hits which seems to be rare for him.

He has a clock on stage and he leaves exactly at the time he wants to. The band finished Gloria and he was long gone.

I would love to hear that story...

I am reading Can Your Hear The Silence? and find those days of early beginnings pretty amazing. What a musical archive that man has in his head...he must have lisitened to every early record by everyone....something to be said for being the product of a father who is a serious music collector.

The bigger part of Van's catalogue is out of print. That is about to change, although it may be more like an iTunes thing or something.

Van has more than paid his dues with years and years of giving it all and playing those long shows on a relentless schedule. I don't blame him at all for doing shorter shows and pacing himself at his age...he's gotta save some energy for Michelle and being an older father.

Van has always been on my favorites list and finally, after years of hoping, I got to see him live last year. He was every bit as good as I knew he would be, did a lot of sax and harmonica work, and his vocals brought tears to my eyes. I think his set was around 1 1/2 hours. Although I could have listened to him all night nobody in my group was complaining. He's got such a vast body of music he could have played 5 times that long and never repeated himself. One thing I appreciated - his tickets weren't in the diva price range (thank you, Van). He was spot on (as was his band). Van IS the man!
