Well - had the chance to see Widespread Panic locally last night. I first saw WP last year after Jimmy had signed on board and was blown away by these guys. Last night clinched it - Jimmy is a perfect fit in this band. In the year + that these guys have been playing collectively as a band they have really found their groove. First time I heard them was great - last night was sublime. There are a few bands and live shows I've been blessed to experience that have taken me to another place. ABB does that when they're 'hitting the note' . Santana has done that for me. Grateful Dead used to do that for me on a regular basis ("ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts, raise your tray tables, and prepare for take-off"). I'm talking the type of musical experience in which you practically need a rope to ground you to your seat because the music just elevates you so much that you are truely in a higher place. Last night I forgot my rope but fortunately had safe landings each time the Panic sent me on my journey. Jimmy Herring is a master on the guitar and a true joy to hear and observe. The whole band was on their game last night. John Hermann's keyboards were boogywoogy personified; Domingo Ortiz and Todd Nance on percussion and drums respectively kept the train rolling; Dave Schools and his 6 string bass is a thing of wonder - this guy has to be one of the premiere bass players out there now; and of course, John Bell whose rythym guitar and vocals are front and center.

susea - I told you I would report back and here's my report. Now - don't forget your rope when you get your Panic show...can't guarantee you'll make it back from your flight otherwise! And wear your dancing shoes! What a joy to be at a show where everyone was on their feet dancing for the entire 3 1/2 hour journey (and not once hearing that dread phrase 'down in front')!!! Here's the set-list (note - there were a couple of teases in here, too ... Bridge of Sighs and Fire On The Mountain) YOWZA!!!

Heck no!!! I was too busy dancing!!! (set list taken from their website, the tease, OMG on Fixin to Die, and impressions of the show comments were from my memory.) susea - you are going to love these guys live and down there in Atlanta over year's end you never know who may show up.

Isn't that Marley standing behind Jimmy?

Jimmy Herring is one of my favorite all time guitar players

That shot looks like its from a Zambiland Orchestra show. I believe that's Tye North, former bassist of Leftover Salmon, in the background. And that's the late Ricky Keller in the foreground wearing the cape and "conducting" the orchestra. I thought the Modulus guitars had 6 in-line tuning pegs, but that was about the time (if the copyright is accurate) that Jimmy was playing the Modulus guitars on the road. Looks sorta like an Ernie Ball/Music Man headstock though, but I've never seen Jimmy play one (of course, that's not to say he hasn't).

A good site I found for Widespread Panic concerts is Panicstream.com. Here's the link:

http://www.panicstream.com/vault.htm

The 10/07/06 show has Susan sitting in on "Little Wing".

I was given the opportunity to see Widespread on Halloween for free and turned it down. I'm really kickin' myself now, but because of the family commitment that comes with a 4 year old on Halloween, i'll have tosee it next go round.

JR you absolutely made the right choice! Panic will be around for awhile but the chance to enjoy Halloween through your 4 year old daughters eyes will be a memory that you (and she!) can treasure forever!

I am listening to this now! Not only is Susan sitting in but also Randall Bramlett on Saxophone, Kofi Burbridge on keys, and Yonrico Scott on percussion!!! Wonderful!!!!

I saw him play for the first time in March at Langerado. He was great, but the band was having some sound problems throughout the night with the rhythm guitarist being too loud. You can hear some of it in this clip I got:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdBkzmaGBhA

But I would highly recommend going to see Jimmy Herring to anyone.
