My daughter is looking for help with a class project. Can you guys help her by identifying bands/songs with references to the bible or biblical passages?

Frank Zappa did a few, but I sure don't think that's what you're looking for.

quote:

Some take the bible
For what it's worth
When it says that the meek
Shall inherit the Earth
Well, I heard that some sheik
Has bought New Jersey last week
'N you suckers ain't gettin' nothin'
Is Hare Rama really wrong
If you wander around
With a napkin on
With a bell on a stick
An' your hair is all gone...
(The geek shall inherit nothin')

You say yer life's a bum deal
'N yer up against the wall...
Well, people, you ain't even got no
Deal at all
'Cause what they do
In Washington
They just takes care
of NUMBER ONE
An' NUMBER ONE ain't YOU
You ain't even NUMBER TWO

Those Jesus Freaks
Well, they're friendly but
The **** they believe
Has got their minds all shut
An' they don't even care
When the church takes a cut
Ain't it bleak when you got so much
nothin'
(So whaddya do)
Eat that pork
Eat that ham
Laugh till ya choke
On Billy Graham
Moses, Aaron 'n Abraham...
They're all a waste of time
'N it's yer ass that's on the line
(IT'S YER ASS THAT'S ON THE LINE)

Do what you wanna
Do what you will
Just don't mess up
Your neighbor's thrill
'N when you pay the bill
Kindly leave a little tip
And help the next poor sucker
On his one way trip...
SOME TAKE THE BIBLE...
(Aw gimme half a dozen for the hotel
room!)

Bob Dylan has very many references to biblical figures, too numerous to list here, here's the website: http://www.bobdylan.com
Also the Beatles "Rocky Raccoon" references Gideon's Bible.
The Byrds' "Jesus Is Just Alright" (covered by the Doobie Brothers)
Bruce Springsteen's "Jesus Was An Only Son"
Just to name a few.

Bob Marley - Adam And Eve Lyrics

The lord named Adam and Eve,
to live a happy life.
In the garden of Eden,
but they disobeyed.

I wanna know,
why they sin,
in the garden of Eden.

It`s a devilman`s affair,
in the shake of a surfband.

And they broke the fruit of life
and everyone of us is living in sin.

Any anywhere you go,
woman is the root of all evil.

He was the first one to break a fruit
and everyone of us is living in sin.

The lord named Adam and Eve,
to live a happy life.
In the garden of Eden,
but they disobeyed.

I wanna know,
why they sin,
in the garden of Eden.

It`s a devilman`s affair,
in the shake of a surfband.

And they broke the fruit of life
and everyone of us is living in sin.

Any anywhere you go,
woman is the root of all evil.

He was the first one to break a fruit
and everyone of us is living in sin.

"Lay It All Down" (by Bob Welch) on their Future Games album

Let me retell
A story of old
About a man named Moses
Who lived long ago
He prophicied good
He prophicied bad
And now that prophecy's
Coming to pass

Let all your sons, and your daughters
Of the golden calf
Lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
Lay it all down, for paradise here on earth

A whole lot of people, including myself
Thought the story of Moses was just a tall tale
But all of the things that we see going on
Are just what Moses set down

Let all your sons, and your daughters
Of the golden-yeah
Lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
Lay it all down, for paradise here on earth

Let me retell
A story I know
About a man named Moses
Who lived long ago
He prophicied good
He prophicied bad
And now that prophecy's
Coming to pass

Let all your sons, and your daughters
Of the golden-yeah
Lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
Lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
Lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
I just can't imagine a reason for sorrow
Just can't imagine the hurt
You've got to lay it down
You've got to lay it down
You've got to lay it down
You've got to lay it down
I said lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
Lay down your burden of sorrow
There's just no reason to hurt
You've got to lay down your burden of sorrow
Lay down your burden of hurt
I said
Lay it all down, for paradise here on earth

Samson and Delilah, Rev. Gary Davis, also performed by the Grateful Dead, Dave Van Ronk, and I'm sure a host of others.

Turn, Turn, Turn, as boss2005 mentioned (by Pete Seeger) was a good one - from Wikipedia:

The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from the King James version of the Bible (Ecclesiastes 3, verses 1Ė8). The Biblical text posits there being a time and place for all things: laughter and sorrow, healing and killing, war and peace, and so on. The lines are open to myriad interpretations, but as a song they are commonly performed as a plea for world peace, with stress on the closing line: "a time for peace, I swear it's not too late," the latter phrase being the only part of the lyric written by Seeger himself.

Dylan has many, as Howard mentioned. Highway 61 Revisited being a popular example.

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."

Referring, of course, to God's test of Abraham's faith to see if it was strong enough for him to make this ultimate sacrifice.

I'm sure you're not talking about straight-up gospel music, but if your daughter can go into old-time blues (or bluegrass), you'll find lots. I've always liked "Prodigal Son" by Rev. Robert Wilkins, which is essentially the whole story of the Prodigal Son from the Book of Luke.

I'm sure there are also numerous biblical references in the "black" sub-genre of heavy metal, but I wouldn't think your daughter (or her teachers) would want to go there.

I'm not sure the mere mention of "God" or "Jesus" qualifies as a Biblical reference, but I've always liked the second verse of James Taylor's Fire and Rain:

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way

I'm sure she'll find plenty if she just spends a little time at it.

If reference to a Biblical figure counts, then I offer:

JESUS WAS A CAPRICORN
Kris Kristofferson

Jesus was a Capricorn, he ate organic foods.
He believed in love and peace and never wore no shoes.
Long hair, beard, and sandals and a funky bunch of friends.
Reckon they'd just nail him up if He come down again.

'Cause everybody's got to have somebody to look down on,
Who they can feel better than at anytime they please,
Someone doin' somethin' dirty, decent folks can frown on.
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me.

Get back, John!

Egg Head's cousin Red Neck's cussin' hippies for their hair.
Others laugh at straights who laugh at freaks who laugh at squares.
Some folks hate the whites who hate the blacks who hate the clan.
Most of us hate anything that we don't understand.

'Cause everybody's got to have somebody to look down on,
Who they can feel better than at anytime they please,
Someone doin' somethin' dirty, decent folks can frown on.
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me.

Help yourself, brother.
Help yourself, Gentlemen.
Help yourself Reverend.

Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
"Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate"

Kris Kristofferson - Jesus Was a Capricorn
"Jesus was a Capricorn
He ate organic food
He believed in love and peace
And never wore no shoes"

Joni Mitchell - The Boho Dance
"Jesus was a beggar, he was rich in grace
And Solomon kept his head in all his glory
It's just that some steps outside the Boho Dance
Have a fascination for me"

Natalie Merchant - Jubilee
..."for Bible study
in the church basement
hear children Gospel citing
Matthew 17:15 alone in the night he mocks
the arms of the preacher
raised to the ceiling
"tell God your pain."

Natalie Merchant - Saint Judas
"...saddle up the horses and wear your Sunday best
sing your Sacred Harp, you be holier than the rest
fill up the room with a grand and a thunderous song
let it rattle out the windows, let it spill out on the lawn
shout, shout your praises to the man who kissed the Lord
to the back stabbing brother that betrayed all of this world
your Judas!"

Natalie Merchant - Weeping Pilgrim
"if you see them father (sister, brother, mother)
please tell them
Iím a poor mourning pilgrim
bound for Canaan land

well I weep and I moan
and I move slowly on
Iím a poor mourning pilgrim
bound for Canaan land"

U2 - 40

(taken from psalm 40)

I waited patiently for the lord
He inclined and heard my cry.
He brought me right out of the pit,
Out of my reglade.
I will sing a new song,
How long to sing this song?
He set my feet upon a rock,
And made my footsteps heard.
Many will see,
Many will see and fear.
I will sing, sing a new song.
How long to sing this song?
