I agree with ruthie - Hank Williams on I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (or any good voice) is a heartbreaker. This performance by Allison Krauss of Ghost In This House is amazing - equally emotional (thanks for posting that link nitelite ).

Here's the lyrics (Nils Landgren)...

I don't pick up the mail
I don't pick up the phone
I don't answer the door
I'd just as soon be alone
I don't keep this place up
I just keep the lights down
I don't live in these rooms
I just rattle around

I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a shadow upon these walls
As quietly as a mouse I haunt these halls
I'm just a whisper of smoke
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire
That once burned out of control
You took my body and soul
I'm just a ghost in this house

I don't care if it rains
I don't care if it's clear
I don't mind staying in
There's another ghost here
He sits down in your chair
And he shines with your light
And he lays down his head
On your pillow at night

I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm just a shadow upon these walls
I'm living proof of the damage
Heartbreak does
I'm just a whisper of smoke
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire
That once burned out of control
And took my body and soul
I'm just a ghost in this house
Oh, I'm just a ghost in this house

Another one which chokes me up is Bonnie Raitt doing Dimming Of The Day. Here's a YouTube link to a video that uses her cover of the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1EWCH3EcAY

and another cover version of this song I found by David Gilmore while looking for Bonnie!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L8bn_3I9DY

and the lyrics (Richard Thompson)

This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
When all my will is gone you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day

You pull me like the moon pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side

What days have come to keep us far apart
A broken promise or a broken heart
Now all the bonnie birds have wheeled away
I need you at the dimming of the day

Come the night you're only what I want
Come the night you could be my confident

I see you on the street in company
Why don't you come and ease your mind with me
I'm living for the night we steal away
I need you at the dimming of the day
I need you at the dimming of the day

"Layla" and "Bell Bottom Blues" from the Layla album can tear me up. Good God, just put a knife through my heart and be done with it.

Outside of those, there is Bonnie Raitt, "I Can't Make You Love Me":

Opportunity to Cry................Willie Nelson

Just watch the sunrise on the other side of town,
Once more I've waited and once more you've let me down,
This would be the perfect time for me to die,
So I'd like to take this opportunity to cry

You gave your word now I return it to you,
With this suggestion to what you can do,
Just exchange the words I love you for goodbye,
While I take this opportunity to cry

I'd like to see you, but I'm afraid I don't know wrong from right,
And if I saw you, would I kiss you, or want to kill you out of sight
Its been a long night, so I guess I'll go home,
And feed my nightmares they been waiting all nght long
They'll be the last ones to tell me goodbye,
And they'll give me many opportunities to cry.....

During my dating days, if you walked up to the door and hear Ray Charles singing "Crying Time", you might as well just turn around and go home.

Son House - Death Letter

I got a letter this mornin, how do you reckon it read?
It said, "Hurry, hurry, yeah, your love is dead."
I got a letter this mornin, I say how do you reckon it read?
You know, it said, "Hurry, hurry, how come the gal you love is dead?"

So, I grabbed up my suitcase, and took off down the road.
When I got there she was layin on a coolin board.
I grabbed up my suitcase, and I said and I took off down the road.
I said, but when I got there she was already layin on a coolin board.

Well, I walked up right close, looked down in her face.
Said, the good ole gal got to lay here til the Judgement Day.
I walked up right close, and I said I looked down in her face.
I said the good ole gal, she got to lay here til the Judgement Day.

Looked like there was 10,000 people standin round the buryin ground.
I didn't know I loved her til they laid her down.
Looked like 10,000 were standin round the buryin ground.
You know I didn't know I loved her til they damn laid her down.

Lord, have mercy on my wicked soul.
I wouldn't mistreat you baby, for my weight in gold.
I said, Lord, have mercy on my wicked soul.
You know I wouldn't mistreat nobody, baby, not for my weight in gold.

Well, I folded up my arms and I slowly walked away.
I said, "Farewell honey, I'll see you on Judgement Day."
Ah, yeah, oh, yes, I slowly walked away.
I said, "Farewell, farewell, I'll see you on the Judgement Day."

You know I went in my room, I bowed down to pray.
The blues came along and drove my spirit away.
I went in my room, I said I bowed down to pray.
I said the blues came along and drove my spirit away.

You know I didn't feel so bad, til the good ole sun went down.
I didn't have a soul to throw my arms around.-acapo

This one gets me every time, especailly the Johnny Cash version..

Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes,
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
An' I shaved my face and combed my hair,
An' stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my brain the night before,
On cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin'.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid,
Cussin' at a can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street,
'n caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken.
And it took me back to somethin',
That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin' comin' down.

In the park I saw a daddy,
With a laughin' little girl who he was swingin'.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school,
And listened to the song they were singin'.
Then I headed back for home,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'.
And it echoed through the canyons,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin' comin' down.

He Stopped Loving Her Today or It Makes No Difference

It makes no diff'rence where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no diff'rence, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go
Like a scar the hurt will always show
It makes no diff'rence who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd
On a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle
They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before

Where Did I Go Wrong

The venetian blinds are open tonight
Just enough to let in the street light
And the shadows paint lines over everything
In the room

There's my chair by the phone
The coat on the floor
Look like dark horizons that lead to the door
On that old Christmas candle you carved the words
I love you
And since you've been gone
There's nothin' right

Where did I go wrong with you
Where did I go wrong

No more dim Sunday night's dance to that sexy radio show
Our hips locked tight
Your neck sweating glow
All sweet night, we'd cook
Supper slow
And oh by the way
You left your candle babe

Burning down
I'm begging darlin' please

Where did I go wrong with you
Where did I go wrong

Was it something I said or did or didn't do
Was all I had not enough for you
Tell me where did I go wrong with you

All the life we were burning through
What with your memory shall I do
I opened up the deepest of my inside
It was all I had left to give
To you.
Where did I go wrong with you
