What Renee said.

GABBAfest was a great time this year, with great friends and famABBly coming in from all over the country, actually, from all over the world! Tmo and his wife from Finland win the "Came From The Farthest Distance" award. A close second was the Bomberrys from Canada, and there was a couple (Michael and his wife, whose name escapes me at the moment) from NY there also. There were a couple folks from Boston as well. Old friends reunited, new friends made, lots of fun for everyone!

Starting Friday night, I arrived at the Douglas Theater after briefly visiting with Judi Petty and Kim Payne. There was a barbecue dinner and it was yummy! Bassist Justin Powell and some of his buddies (they have a band name, but I have forgotten it) played an acoustic set for the dinner crowd with Justin on upright bass. Very cool set, not a mic or electric instrument in sight. Afterward, The Fly Brothers band was the first band on stage. Very jam oriented and this was also Justin Powell on six string bass. Justin is very animated on stage and can play a funky bass. Also, our own MissTerry's son, Stephen, plays in The Fly Brothers. Like I said, their set was very funky and jam/groove oriented.

Next up was Mojo:Saint. Man, what can I say about the blues? These guys can play the blues with conviction. Billy Earl McClelland is a great guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Drummer David Brazeal was rock solid and contributed a strong vocal to their rendition of Statesboro Blues. And of course, Jack Hall was there on bass. Jack laid a solid foundation with David for Billy Earl to wail out some tasty blues licks, as well as some screaming slide. They had the audience sing along to the chorus of Burn Down The Crack House and Jack heard me singing a high harmony and made a comment about it (of course, he didn't know it was me, but having his approval was cool. ) Thanks to GABBAfest, Mojo:Saint has a bunch of new fans in Georgia, including myself.

Finally on Friday, The Randall Bramblett Band was...well, it's The Randall Bramblett Band!!! These guys can flat cook!! Smooth was a word used several times on Saturday morning discussing the previous evening's events over Waffle House coffee. Randall and his band mates are consummate professionals. Think about it. You had a large portion of the talent that was in the group Sea Level in Randall's group. Davis Causey continues to amaze people with his guitar skills, and he even played bass to Randall's guitar on the three piece number during the show. The band members were all smiles during their set, obviously enjoying themselves, even while still grieving the loss of Stuart Collins, their road manager. Music, it's good for what ails ya.

Back later for a recap of Saturday's events......

Had a blast meeting Renee and Miss Thang.....just what you would expect--goodness personified, honest, and "gets" the music. Those guys racked up some nice loot in the raffle too!.

Ran into the ultimate cluster**** on the trip over, 2 18-wheelers rolled at about the state line, closed I-20, traffic rerouted onto 2-lane county roads. No traffic control past the Ga. line. Saw WAY more of Harralson Co. than I ever want. Took 3 hours + to reach Tallapoosa. Checked the mileage on the way back--less than 10 miles. Three plus hours to go 10 miles. Which put me to Macon over 3 hours late. Only got to catch the last 3 songs from Randall Bramlett, but enough to realize I had missed a lot. I got to see more.
Wheels turning, thinking about next Oct.

Really enjoyed Vaylor's band too. So much talent out there these days! And Jack--is there any better? A true master of the guitar. And so effortless. Almost seems like he's trying to stay awake sometimes. Looking forward to seeing these guys again at the Jam. Their keyboard player, Dennis, will be along for the JFD.

Of course the highlight for me is always being with others from here I have come to know and love through this site and the legacy of Duane Allman. My soul knows when it is at home. Won't try to name everybody, always leave somebody out....but a special kudo to Origapeach, who made the trek up from Tampa after helping with Callahan's service earlier in the day. Matt only stayed for a few hours before turning around and heading back. He reported to us that Galadrielle came in for Callahan's funeral, very classy lady.

Home again, feeling a sense of joy. Looking forward to seeing everybody again very soon.
Already looking forward to the next GABBA.

Good times in Macon!

Wish I'd had a chance to meet a few folks, but I somehow ended up running around like a maniac all night. Something in the air (humidity) made me look like I'd just stepped out of the pool, too. blech.

Look forward to actually getting a chance to actually shake a few hands in Gadsden here in a couple of weeks.

Randy, I saw you but I didn't even recognize you! Didn't hit me until we were driving back to the hotel after the show.

Anyway, it was a great evening of music! Second time for me to see Bonobos. First time was Wanee 2006 and they've definitely come a long way since then.

I won't comment on Jack since I'm obviously biased...

Let's just say a good time was undoubtedly had by all. Maybe we'll even see some audio recordings surface at some point...!

I'm still recovering from a great weekend! Lots of hard work went into making this one of the best GABBA Fests ever! Thanks to Greg, Surrelle, Mary, Bekah, Jimmy, Michael, and many, many more!

I'll write my review and post videos and pictures later today hopefully. Every band was AWESOME!

Dave, the acoustic set was the Fly Brothers (Justin Powell, Stephen Hendrix, Scott Phillips and Ben Farmer)...the same band that plugged in and played the first set Friday night.

Renee, thanks for your review and all the others. I'll get my thoughts and pictures together and will be back with more.

Thanks to all who attended! It was great seeing everyone!

Miss Terry

P.S. Renee was referring to Stephen, my youngest son and a member of the Fly Brothers. He was raised on great music, ventured off experimenting with other music and has come back home in recent years. He loves the Allman Brothers and related bands. Tommy Talton is his mentor and hero. Randall Bramblett is now on that list too He did not move the entire show. His chin was on his chest. That's what it's all about....turning on the new generation to some incredible music and legends! I'm still flying high from this weekend!

Oops...shows how much I paid attention. It's always about the bass players with me.

Speaking of bass players, how about that Elizabeth Pearson???

Did Bluedaddy wear his thong at GABBAfest and does anyone have pics to post?

I am sorry I had to miss it this year. I went to my first one in 1993... good times and good people.

Hey, y'all . . .

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who was at GABBAfest and made it such a great experience for us all! We had an awesome line-up this year, and I'm glad everyone was feeling the music!!!

Thanks, also, to our sponsors and extra special thanks to everyone who participated in the auction, either by donating, bidding, or both. We are certainly blessed to have such generous Brothers and Sisters.

Much appreciation to the bands for giving us exactly what we needed, and to MissTerry for pulling it all together. And pardon me while I bow down in praise and mention Capt. Jack's stellar rendition of "Little Martha." I still have goose bumps.

See y'all soon!
~Bekah
