I never quite figured out why the sexual urge of men and women differ so
much.
And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing.

I have never figured out why men think with their head and women with
their heart.

FOR EXAMPLE: One evening last week, my wife and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says "I don't feel
like it, I just want you to hold me."

I said "WHAT??!! What was that?!"

So she says the words that every husband on the planet dreads to hear...
"You're just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me
to satisfy your physical needs as a man." She responded to my puzzled look by saying,
"Can't you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in the bedroom?"

Realizing that nothing was going to happen that night, I went to sleep.

The very next day I opted to take the day off of work to spend time with her. We went out to a nice lunch and then went shopping at a big, big unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on several very expensive outfits. She couldn't decide which one to take so I told her we'd just buy them all.

She wanted new shoes to compliment her new clothes, so I said let's get a
pair for each outfit.

We went onto the jewelry department where she picked out pair of diamond
earrings.

Let me tell you...she was so excited. She must have thought I was one wave
short of a shipwreck.

I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis
bracelet when she doesn't even know how to play tennis.

I think I threw her for a loop when I said, "That's fine, honey." She was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement.

Smiling with excited anticipation she finally said, "I think this is all
dear, let's go to the cashier."

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, "No honey, I don't feel
like it."

Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a
baffled----"WHAT?"

I then said, "Honey, I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You're just not in touch with my financial means as a man enough for me to satisfy your shopping needs as a woman."

And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, "Why can't you just love me for who I am and not for the things I buy you?"

Apparently I'm not having sex tonight either.

There is no difference between men and women. It is a construction of power...stereotypes are propgated by discourses that control the modes of production. It keeps the machine working. Women do not "think with their heart," they are more than capable of making rational, informed decisions, using data sets, numbers in just as cold, indfferent fashion as any male. Portraying females as emotional, overly-sensitive etc. marginalizes them and categorizes them as "other." This senseless thinking reinforces the male-dominated patriarchy that has long been inherent in Transcendental, Judeo-Christian ethics systems and poses a direct hypocritical contradiction to the stated values of plural democracy that this country proclaims to be about.

My post was intended as a humorous view of sexual relations, not as any kind of political statement. Gracious me! No offense was intended, and I hope none was taken.

But I have to say, as a husband, father of a daughter, and brother to three sisters, there are some differences. Surely one doesn't contend that testosterone, estrogen, X chromosomes, and Y chromosomes have the same effect.

(And I think the women referenced above would readily dispute any notion that I have a "power construct" over them!)

Would love to compare notes, Dave. Much to my regret, I figured out after the fact that I sat within one row of you up in the "nosebleed" section at the Gregg A. & Friends show at the Tabernacle a year or two ago--at least, I think that was you. If I'd known for sure, I would've shook your hand! Next time, we've gotta meet up!

Count me in for the following :

Two Fathers .....(1 mother and 7 or 8 step-moms)
Two brothers..... (sisters,..only by marriage)
Three Husbands .....(first two died)
..............(oodles of proposals between husbands)
Two sons.......(no daughters)
Numerous male friends...... (very few female friends)

Differences in me-n-them ?
Oh Joy !!!!!!!!
Yes !!!!!!!!!

And the scary thing is,...I actually understand them,....(how else could I have gotten 3 husbands,...and kept um,...)........

The present one thought 'marriage' ment sex-every-night,...i.e. no more begging.....
19 years later,.........he's Still not begging and can't believe his good luck (!)
(The man is totally paranoid about the mere idea of ever being an un-married man again)

I still get flowers every week,....and they aren't even roses because I refused to let him spend that kind of money on me,......but I Love my Wal-Mart Carnation Bouquets,.....

Clothes ? Wal-Mart sales racks,...plus, I sew

Shoes ? ,.....flipflops are fine in Summer, and cheap running shoes in Winter

Jewelry ? .......I have a 12 dollar silver filligree wedding band,.....and no engagement ring,....I don't even like diamonds,...!

Beautician ? The last one of those I ever saw,...I was 17 and my, then, red-neck husband sent me to get my rich mane of chestnut locks cut to 1/2 - 4inches lengths,.....because I was determined to get out of the marriage and he wanted to make darn good and sure I looked horrid so no other male would want me,.......didn't work,...I escaped anyway,...and got a new husband,...and both died in the next 10 years..
My Chestnut mane is now down to my hips, and my goal is knee-length

Make-up ? Don't wear the stuff,......and save oodles of dough. (and silly time in front of mirrors)

Smoking/drinking ? Nope on all,...I'm a cheap date.

Fancy resturants ? Don't believe in um......silly waste of money to get all un-comforably dressed up for, to eat over-priced micro-portions on over-sized serving dishes,.....for THAT kind of money,....they should provide you a fancy bag to carry the dishes home in because That's what you really paid for,...

Fancy vacations ? I have ZERO desire to ever : go to Hawaii, go on a cruise, go to a luxury resort, or anywhere else where I'll be pampered,.....the whole idea of it just leaves me cold with boredom,........My idea of a 'Vacation' is camping in Miss. for a week or PA for two weeks, with thousands of re-inactors, and going to classes everyday in learning how-to do historical crafts,....and wild parties every night where I don't even drink,....but get a kick out of watching the Medieval drunks make fools out of themselves

Now tell me,......do I 'understand' men ? ? ?

tranetracks, with all due respect to Alice Coltrane, bless her, I would say John Coltrane was the much better musician. And the difference between his band with McCoy and his band with Alice was startling.

quote:
It is a construction of power...
John played with much greater power.
quote:
stereotypes are propgated by discourses that control the modes of production.
It was mostly John who controlled the modes that the band played in. In discourses with Alice and the other band members, though, I imagine he granted them great latitude in how much they stuck to these modes in a given instance of propagation.

quote:
It keeps the machine working. Women do not "think with their heart," they are more than capable of making rational, informed decisions, using data sets, numbers in just as cold, indfferent fashion as any male.
Alice would be going plink-plink-plink on the piano in practically machinelike fashion (routine free jazz piano style); likewise nothing really exceptional on harp, vibes, or whatever; likewise, her addition of strings to some of John's works after his death watered them down. Meanwhile John would be tearing himself inside-out. Not saying Alice was necessarily cold and indifferent, merely turning piano keys into a means of accessing and crunching data sets (scale degrees, harmonic intervals, rhythmic counts), but she just didn't have the technical facility and breadth of imagination that John did. Or even that McCoy did. So, her accompaniment and solos seemed relatively less a natural, free-flowing expression of the inner self, less like thinking with her heart.

quote:
Portraying females as emotional, overly-sensitive etc. marginalizes them and categorizes them as "other."
John seemed more emotional. Some people say that some of his wailing and crying and guttural sounds indicated that he was being overly sensitive, relative to the context of the immediate performance or even to the programmatic background of the piece. But how can a musician be too sensitive--it's just that the other band members aren't sensitive enough, so the most sensitive one may stand out as an other.

quote:
This senseless thinking reinforces the male-dominated patriarchy that has long been inherent in Transcendental, Judeo-Christian ethics systems
Despite dominating his groups in almost every way, it was more through a natural ordering of things, rather than senseless thinking.
quote:
and poses a direct hypocritical contradiction to the stated values of plural democracy that this country proclaims to be about.
In fact, it could be argued that by being very pluralistic and democratic, John weakened his latter bands' effectiveness. By giving Pharaoh Sanders and Rashied Ali virtually equal voices in band performances, John allowed McCoy and Elvin Jones to be driven out. He let Alice play like she wanted and as long as she wanted. These were not good things. Taking hold of the band in a more blatantly authoritative, "patriarchal" fashion would have benefited the band--and listeners.

I am talking about two different concepts here. One is sex, the other gender and sexuality. Sex is biology. XX or XY...and they give different physical traits. This is, however, a superficial part of a persons being that they have no control over. To define oneself based exclusively on these grounds I think, is to self oneself short. I probably shouldn't have opened this can of worms to begin with...I doubt that anyone really wants to discuss deconstruction with me, but I feel like it is a philosophy that supports a more plural reading of democracy than the traditional Judeo-Christian, Transcendental reading that is common place today.

What I am saying is that the traditional view of femininity is limiting. Defining women in terms of their emotions, sensitivities, motherhood etc... is not fair. And these definitions come from power, which incidentally is not in my pants. Power here is the grand narrative of Judeo-Christian ethics. I distrust grand narratives. They always have an agenda. This particular discourse/value system was written by white men, of european descent, whether following the Catholic line or the Lutheran/post-Lutheran line of Christian ethics-all are rooted in the thinking of white men. They are the ones in power, they are the ones with the money. This mode of thinking or "mode of production" as Marx would say is just another way of keeping the power structure stable and functioning.

Its a complex discussionion that I am more than willing to engage in. I am also willing to take heat for my views.

As for the gentleman who suggested that it would be a shame for my parents to pay money for me to learn these things...I put myself through college working two jobs and teaching guitar. I chose to learn.

Man,....I am SO Confused,........

Is we here to have fun,(?).......or to get into some sort of heavy no-win debate on personal perspectives of whether or not men and women come from the same planet ?

Personally,.....I'd rather be having fun.

Heavy debates are just too much hard work and we females have such tiny complicated brains you need a microscope to figure us out,........the scary thing is I actually understand SOME of what your saying,......and I even agree, up to a point,.....but I think what you want to get into,....welll,...I think you may have just chosen the wrong String to have your debate in,.....seriously,....

May I suggest, if you REALLY want to debate this,.... you might wanna introduce it as a whole new topic and spell out the subject in such a way it attracts the kind-o-folks who will welcome the opportunity to hash it out with you ,.....this one, here,....is too light-weight to be attracting the kind of minds you're apparently hopeing to find,...

Just my 2-dollar bill's worth

(oh, and while you're at it,...try breaking up the paragraphs,.........when ya run it all together in one huge block that way,....it looks too much like a mindless rant and folks just get lost and turned off,......I don't think THAT'S what you want,....so try making it easier to follow and you may get some takers,........)
