Man what the heck is going on with the Rockn Roll Hall of Fame???

Madonna tops Rock Hall nominees list
Beastie Boys, John Mellencamp, Donna Summer also among elligible singers

NEW YORK - Here’s something Madonna can really celebrate: a nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Madge joins heartland rocker John Mellencamp, the puckish rappers Beastie Boys and premier dance acts Donna Summer and Chic among the nine nominees for the hall. The five leading vote-getters will be inducted in the annual ceremony March 10, 2008 at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

The other nominees are rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, the original British Invasion combo The Dave Clark Five and surf rock instrumentalists The Ventures.

I'm not a big Mellencamp fan, but at least he plays rock and roll. Madonna? The Beastie Boys? Chic? Donna Summer? What have any of these acts go to do with rock and roll?

Who does the nominating? What are their criteria? Might be time for some of the real bands to bail on this bunch. Just an opinion. They're really starting to demean the R&R HOF.

Madonna does deserve an award, just not in the HOF. That award would be she's #1 in the financial success to talent ratio.

Tom Dowd is not in the HOF yet this assortment of crap is recommended. As far as I'm concerned, Madonna and others like her were instrumental (no pun intended) in starting the deterioration of popular music (under whose umbrella was rock'n'roll) into the wasteland that it is today. There was a thread on here the other day about Dylan and how "Rainy Day Women" and "Like A Rolling Stone" were top-40, AM and FM hits. Radio today, in the words of Levon Helm, "ain't worth a pinch of sh!t".

Do I remember reading that neither Rush nor Yes are in the R&R HOF?

We'd better hope it doesn't get too crowded in there. They're liable to kick the Beatles out to make room for Britney.

I stopped once going through Cleveland toward Toledo on business, I know the deciding heads up there may be crazy, but they have some pretty good exhibits. WHen I walked in, I thought a local elementary school had their students artwork on display. It turned out to be all of Jimi Hendrix childhoods drawings.............real cool

The Ventures - HELL YES! Also hearing loud and clear Marshall Tucker Band, Yes, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Tom Dowd and all of the others mentioned. Maybe a separate Pop Music Hall of Fame, or a Pop wing to the existing museum should be considered. How do ya get from Muddy Waters to Madonna?

Perhaps it should be divided into Pop and Rock divisions....

The other Halls of Fame (football, baseball) are pretty selective as to who they will and won't let in, keeping them places of respect. This bunch seems to be OK with letting it become at ten-cent (or 50-cent) store. Low bar, talent-wise. Takes away from the honor of being a member.

Sorry, but Madonna is NOT rock and roll. She's ... I don't know what she is.

Chic is disco.

Beastie Boys are rap, as is Afrika Bambaataa.

Mellencamp is worthy. He invented the Heartland rock sound (with a nod going to Springsteen.) Dave Clark Five and The Ventures are OK too, but the rest of the nominees don't belong. Sorry, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Let's build that pop museum on a floating barge ... so that it can be towed out to sea during the next approaching hurricane or nor-easter.

Come on, it is what it is. Take a look at this list of inductees. Everyone would claim that there are some real duds. But music is subjective. The term "Rock n Roll" is subjective. The museum is a very cool place and you shouldn't cross it off you list.

Personally I think Madonna and the Beasties have made very big impacts in the music world. Maybe not eveyone would classify them as rock n roll. But in the broad picture I think they belong.

No separate check for Duane Allman (Clapton's in there several times)? That's a shame, too!
