I know this has been done before (and probably to death), but after listening through the various IL's, seeing the band all through the 90's and the last 5 years, I gotta say, I really prefer Warren's slide solo in 'Dreams' anyday to Derek's.

At the Camden show this year, I kept waiting for Derek to kick it up a notch. To reach that same intenstity Warren always brings when channelling Duane. I felt it was just OK.

I know, I know how dare me. But I really feel Warren owns 'Dreams'. Hell Jack Pearson as well. And yes, Warren's tone can be somewhat generic for some songs. But I just prefer it for this song.

However, Derek owns 'Aint Wastin Time ...' and others.

perhaps the title "Warren vs Derek" is not the way to structure this. It's not a competition. I think they each "own" certain songs. I think I am always blown away by both of their talents and I am happy to have them on the same stage together playing these classic songs.

I started a thread on who you prefer sliding on various songs long ago. My take: Statesboro- WH, DSW-either, DKMW and Standback-Derek,Dreams- either but they approach it quite differently.

Warren vs. Derek? Derek is taller, so I suspect he could get more punches in, but Warren looks more muscular, so I think that whatever punches he could land on Derek, they woudl have more effect.
I think Derek could out-run and out-jump Warren, though.

I remember when I first heard Warren on 1st Set's "Dreams" and thinking that was some powerful stuff. Same goes for "Statesboro Blues" from that early 90s period and I still love that version of "Dreams", however, after hearing what Derek does with those tunes, I find myself a little disappointed if Warren does either these days, just by comparison to Derek's take. I actually prefer Dickey/Warren over just Warren on "Dreams", I just haven't heard Warren hit that one out of the park like Jack and Derek do these days (Fox Box is a great comparison for this). Same goes for "Statesboro Blues," Derek just rips that up.

Funny someone mentioned "Ain't Wasting Time" because while I will pay to hear any version the band does, I prefer past arrangements to the one they use these days. I love Derek's solo, but I feel like, compared to past versions, Warren's solo at the end doesn't really add anything, it doesn't top Derek's solo and isn't a fitting climax. I miss the harmony that Dickey & Warren/Derek/Jack would do at the end, it was a nice, melodic climax to the tune, and Dickey's solo contrasted Warren's enough, it wasn't a slide duel. The version Dickey & Warren did on Austin City Limits is one of the best.

Don't get me wrong, Warren is an amazing player, but on "Dreams", my favorite song, Derek and Jack own them these days.

I'm not sure that Warren is actually more muscular - just heavier.
This last summer, Derek appeared to be in great shape.
Couple that with the longer reach and younger age, and I think the judges score it for Derek, but I don't see him knocking Warren out.

Of course, I'm assuming Warren doesn't grab ahold of that pony tail.

In the spirit of Duane and Dickey,
I don't believe they ever saw it as a competition.

And I don't think the original post was meant to indicate a competetion, just a preference for Dreams....

My preference (if not Duane) is Jack Pearson, the Derek, then Warren....but it's all good, and on any given night any of them can really hit the note on Dreams.

Also - is it just my lack of musical knowledge, but does it sound like recent Warren Haynes solos on Dreams have been less "frantic" at the end than in previous years?

I agree with you on AWTNM. Derek makes the new version of that cook. I actually like Warren's slide on a lot of the traditional blues the brothers do. I think Warren is a pretty inventive player in his own right and while Derek is a genius, Warren's great skill should nto be denigrated. I love his tone and his sound and his soloing.

Doug

That's what is the beauty of this band. I will one week say Warren is the better of the two. The next week its Derek. It has gone back and forth for years now.

Truth is they both rule in there on way.
