I had seen a great Dead cover band a few weekends ago .So it got me thinking about seeing the Dead which I never really did. One show at Giants Stadium in June of 90 something ( i think ). Well it sucked big time.

Anyway I had heard about DSO and checked their website, they are doing a show at the Count Basie theater ( NJ) on Dec 30th. I picked up a pair of tix, great seats row G center Orchestra for $50.00 ea. I don't think you can go wrong with that.

I know they pick a "show" and play it from start to finish. It sounds like a great time.
Has anyone seen them ?

What should I expect.

ps - It will be quite a weekend, Mule on the 29th and DSO on the 30th and NYE the next day.

you can expect a wonderful time, really. if you close your eyes you might think you are at a dead show (complete with wookies and all)......

the only thing i can think of to say is that, at times, DSO is a bit more, errr...."ON" then the dead. In other words, sometimes the performances sound better than the originals.

i love trying to figure out what show it is, i've never gotten it right but always at least get the tour right.

ENJOY, it will be great and it is about as close to the authentic GD as you will get.

Rob Baracco is now an official member of the band.

He's played with the ABB plenty of times.

This sounds like an excellent addition to DSO. I've seen them a few times and always enjoy them - good music, fun experience. (I should mention that I've enjoyed all the Dead shows I've seen over the years, also )

Trust me I'm not badmouthing the Dead. It was like 95 degrees just ridiculously HOT.
It was more of the giant sized stadium that probably created the bad feeling .

I have since become quite the fan, been collecting alot of the 70's shows, by far their best stuff in my opinion. I had just seen the ABB and Ratdog and really enjoyed the Ratdog show ( it was at the Garden State Arts Center ) you non locals know it as PNC .

By the way the cover band that I saw was called "Fresh Baked Daily" They played from 8pm until 12:30am. It was outside at someones home.
They opened with Saturday Night, finished with We Bid You Goodnight and in between they played Jack Straw, Bertha, Franklins Tower, Scarlet > Fire ,Cassidy, Deal , . Some non Dead songs they played and really kicked as >> Like A Rolling Stone , Melissa, Ramblin Man, The Weight, Crosstown Traffic,
OH and they even played some Mule, I wore my GOT MULE shirt and it was a big hit with the band.
They played any and all requests we suggested expcept when they said they were finished and we asked for one more, they said OK something quick . I suggested Whipping Post !

Exactly right. I love going to their shows. The last time I saw them they performed 07-08-78 from Red Rocks. It was very good.

The above is nothing less than blasphemy...you surely are entitled to your opinion.

Aside from that, I have seen DSO a few times and it is an excellent show!! I saw GD 50 or so times, and no show the DSO ever do will be better, much less even as good as original Dead shows. Either way, if you like GD, you will definitely enjoy these guys.

I am in complete agreement with drkstr40. Without Jerry Garcia in the band...............NOTHING is as good as it was in the old days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still say the same thing that I say every time........DSO is just a glorified cover band. I close my eyes at their shows and I still hear DSO ripping off the Grateful Dead and taking $$$$

I am MOSTLY in agreement with you.....though only the part where you agree with me The DSO puts on a kick-ass show....I have seen many GD cover bands, including one a friend of mine is in, but the DSO is way more than a cover band. Maybe a little expensive to see, but they get into some pretty cool venues.

I love DSO shows and to me their ticket prices are quite reasonable. they are beautifully talented at re-creating the shows and quench my thirst for a live dead performance.

There is a guy in Australia who sings the sh it out of Journey songs but he still COVERS the band. This is my point. Why would I, or anyone for that matter, pay $50 (??!!!???) to see a cover band that has quality instruments? This makes no sense to me and DSO is laughing all the way to the bank. And don't say that I haven't heard them enough because my best friend recorded them officially on tour many times. Do yourself a favor......find some quality Betty boards, turn them up very loud on Bose speakers and see what DSO is not able to do

I agree......$50 is a bit high.....I think they get this ticket price because they get into some pretty nice venues that command the high price. I definitely do not consider them a rip off band or anything that thinks they are scamming everyone. These guys (and girl when they do a Donna show), are excellent musicians who are loving what they are doing.

I'm always happy to fork out cash for DSO- they always send a positive honest vibe out to the audience in their playing - the band is very respectful of the songs and have a great time performing. the flow is good and the shows are just darned good fun. I love the packed houses full of dancing bodies - they found a niche and I hope they get stinkin' filthy rich. My fix for 23 years of Grateful Dead concerts....

tickets for the Ithaca 5/8/07 (5/8/77) show was 20.00. sold out for days.

anyway, its all about supply and demand. I guess some folk out there just plain like to be entertained by decent musicians for the night. The government doesnt force folk to attend!

Love Rob Barraco - he always seems to be having a good time with them.

My dad has always been a big dead fan...saw them a good bit in the 70's and up until Jerry's death. This past year he saw them for the first time and loved the performance. He didn't say they were better or worse than the original, but that it was amazingly similar and if nothing else a great time. We're seeing them once (possibly twice if we're lucky) over Christmas break and I can't wait.

Gotta agree with you on this drkstr...DSO are great and fun but it isn't the Grateful Dead

That's where I am. I have seen them a couple of times and was duly impressed with their talent level. But at the same time, there was something unsettling about the whole thing. Something I still cannot place my finger on.

Nonetheless, it was fascinating to watch a recreation of a 1973 show and then the next night see them recreate a 1978 one.

I'm not a deadhead (own four CDs), but I saw DSO one time, and thought they were great.

$50 for a DSO show is a rareity. $25-40 is more the norm. But... how much would a Dead ticket go for nowadays? With that comparison in mind, paying less than half price for DSO vs the Dead ain't so bad.

Paid $30 to see DSO last month at a SRO venue. It was worth it just see the crowd. Their fans are an eclectic bunch!

I don't think they are a rip off in any shape, form or fashion. I absolutely LOVE them ! Rob was with them when they were in Hotlanta (9/7/07) and they ROCKED !!! Great May '74 show. If Rob plays with them and both Bobby Weir and Donna Jean sit in from time to time they have my utmost respect.

Do they still try to look like the GD? That I found kind of creepy. Baraco is great! Loved him with PLQ. That was my favorite version of P+Friends
