His road manager died suddenly..lets keep them all in our prayers

Road manager's death dampens spirits at festival

The Randall Bramblett Band was scheduled to perform on Jekyll.

By MIKE MORRISON, Times-Union correspondent

JEKYLL ISLAND - A performance of the Randall Bramblett Band on Jekyll Island was canceled Saturday when the band's road manager died unexpectedly.

The popular band was to have been the main entertainment for the annual Shrimp and Grits festival.

"We are all saddened by the loss of Randall Bramblett's longtime friend and road manager, Stuart Collins, this weekend due to a sudden heart attack," said Leslie Turner of Progressive Global Artists, a Nashville-based management agency that represents Bramblett.

Collins, 46, lived in Athens with his wife and two daughters, Turner said.

"He was a big part of the musical family," she said. "He was a big music fan and was totally dedicated to Randall. This is a huge loss for Randall."

As road manager, Collins saw to the band's needs on the road, Turner said. He was responsible for equipment, transportation and accommodations.

"He was the point person for the band," Turner said. "It's a huge loss for us."

Glynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden confirmed that a heart attack was the most likely cause of Collins' death. His deputy, Chris Stewart, was on Jekyll for the festival and worked the case.

"I spoke with Randall Bramblett and he was distraught," Stewart said. "I met several other members of the band and they were all upset, quite shocked."

Stewart said Collins was found by hotel staff of Villas by the Sea in the band's van. He said he was told Collins had only moments earlier left the band to move the van.

Jekyll Island events coordinator Beth Burnsed said the festival, called Shrimp and Grits: The Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival, had proceeded remarkably well before the tragedy.

An announcement was made that the show had been canceled because of unforeseen circumstances, but there was no mention of Collins' death until later in the evening, she said.

The band was to have taken the stage at 6:45 p.m., capping a long day of festivities that included a cooking contest, arts and crafts, antiques and other entertainment.

"Over the course of the evening, a lot of questions came up, so we later made an announcement that there had been a death," Burnsed said. "The whole crowd was very understanding."

Karaoke took the place of the band, and the evening ended with a fireworks display.

Some music fans went away shocked and disappointed.

St. Simons Island musician Bobby Watson, a longtime Bramblett fan, was waiting for the show when he heard the unfortunate news.

"It was heartbreaking," he said. "You never think something like this can happen, but it does. I was shocked like everybody else."

Bramblett, a native of Jesup, has been a major talent, if not a major star, since the mid-1970s, when he toured with Gregg Allman on Allman's first solo venture away from the Allman Brothers Band.

He released two critically acclaimed albums in the 1970s on the Polydor label before joining Chuck Leavell in Leavell's band, Sea Level.

In recent years, he reformed his own band and released several CDs.

He also has toured with Bonnie Raitt and Steve Winwood and Traffic

What's sadder still is that I bet it very likely could have been avoided. We all know most musicians don't have health insurance. I would bet my bottom dollar that as a road manager of a modestly known touring act, Mr. Collins had no health insurance and therefore was not under the care of a Physician. If he was, his heart problems would have been diagnosed and treated and he'd probably still be alive. As a husband and father of two, it's likely Mr. Collins could not afford to pay cash for Dr.'s visits or the heart meds he likely would have been on. This is one reason I'm for national health insurance for all Americans.
