This is very sad news.

VIENNA (Sept. 11) - Keyboardist Joe Zawinul, who played with Miles Davis and helped create the sound of jazz fusion, died from cancer in Vienna on Tuesday, local news agency APA reported, quoting his son Erich.

"Joe Zawinul was born on July 7, 1932 in earth time, and on September 11, 2007 in eternal time. He lives on," APA quoted Erich Zawinul as saying.

Ronald Zak, AP Joe Zawinul, Sept. 11: The jazz fusion keyboard great who worked with Miles Davis on 'Bitches Brew' died in Vienna after a battle with cancer.
Zawinul, 75, had been admitted to the Wilhelmina Clinic in his native city last month. The hospital said it would give a statement later in the day.

Zawinul went to the United States in his 20s and found fame as a keyboardist and a composer in trumpet legend Davis's first electric band, playing on the "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew" albums that pioneered jazz fusion in the late 1960s.

In 1970 he founded Weather Report, a band that did much to bring electric piano, synthesizers and African and Middle Eastern rhythms to mainstream audiences in a jazz setting.

Zawinul has fronted the "Zawinul Syndicate" for the past 20 years. He had planned to give a concert in Vienna's concert hall on September 29.

RIP, Mr. Zawinul

A HUGE loss for the jazz world. I only regret that I didn't make it to see Joe a few more times than I did. I saw Weather Report once way back in 1984. I saw Zawinul Syndicate three or four times. Joe was the world renowned MASTER of the synthesizer as well as an accomplished pianist.

Here's a little story I heard which gives a hint of Zawinul's enormous talent: I was at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland maybe ten years ago to see Chick Corea. I happened to sit next to a man in his sixties who many years ago had become acquainted with Zawinul. He told me how Zawinul had related to him, "Miles has asked me to write for him." Zawinul accepted the challenge. The resulting record was the fusion masterpiece, "Bitches Brew", which Zawinul also played piano on. Few people know that Zawinul wrote most of the music on that record.

My interest in Derek actually lead me to Weather Report. I'd heard of them but hadn't ever purchased any of their material. Derek has a keen interest in Wayne Shorter and knowing Shorter was in WR with Zawinul, a number of great drummers like Alphonse Mouzon and bassists including Jaco Pastorious, I gave it a listen.

Great, great music.

Thank you Joe. RIP.

Very sad news indeed. A big Weather Report fan from their inception which lead me to seek and appreciate Zawinul's musical contributions elsewhere (and thanks to a kind soul from this site have enjoyed some live Zawinul Syndicate - grazie Ed! ) A huge talent who will be missed.

I love In A Silent Way so much. I need to listen to my Weather Report CDs more as I have a liking but not a loving for them. Yet.

Derek Trucks connection: he has covered Weather Report's "Cucumber Slumber," though Tommy Bolin's version of that song is my fave!!!

Can't believe he's gone. Let's not forget all that great work he did with Cannonball Adderley in the late 50s and early 60s prior to his landmark stuff with Davis and Report.

I was glad to log in this morning and see that this thread was still on the front page. A true jazz pioneer, a genius of the union of jazz and rock has left us this week. I have to think that early ABB, especially Live at The Fillmore, owes just a little to this man.

Does anyone know if there is a DVD out by either Zawinul Syndicate, Weather Report, or both?

Was going thru the Jazz Corner in the Derek thread to find something to lsiten to and came across this post by horacegammet

Weather Report deserves mention here. I would highly reccomend the Black Market and Heavy Weather albums.

For those of you unfamiliar (and there must be a couple), Weather Report was a group founded by two Miles Davis sidemen, Joe Zawinul (keys), and Wayne Shorter (saxes). Later, they had the late bass legend, Jaco Pastorious. They also at various times had Alphonso Johnson (Jazz is Dead w/Jimmy Herring. Jaco replaced Al), and maybe Miroslav Vitous for a while. In fact, he might have been there at the beginning. These are bass players. They had several different drummers, as well, including Chester Thompson (who went on to fame in Phil Collins' ban in the 80's), and the great Peter Erskine.

Due to the era, some people considered Weather Report a "fusion" band. But they were, at least to me, a modern jazz group. And they were, without a doubt, the top selling jazz group ever. But this isn't a minus. They were most definitely NOT sellouts. Jaco was the Jimi Hendrix of jazz(or maybe the Coltrane of bass. Probably both), and they played huge rooms and headlined huge festivals around the world.
