Tedeschi incandescent as ever in another visit to Cape’s Melody Tent

Susan Tedeschi’s summer shows at the Cape Cod Melody Tent have become an annual tradition. The receptive crowds always include dozens of family members and friends, and the guitar slinger from Norwell always seems to hit the heights here.

Friday night’s show was another golden chapter in this series of incandescent performances. Tedeschi and her band delivered a scorching 80 minutes of rockin’ blues.

Tedeschi, 36, has not been in the spotlight much lately, although she did spend some of her summer vacation sitting in on a few shows with husband Derek Trucks and the Allman Brothers Band, including both Boston shows a couple of weeks back. She did mention Friday that, with son Charlie entering kindergarten last week, she hopes to have time to record a new album this fall, for release in early 2008.

Meanwhile, with Trucks’ own band on hiatus, his wife borrowed most of that band’s members for this tour, which will hit the Hampton Beach Casino on Friday night and the Rhythm and Roots Festival in Charlestown, R.I., on Saturday.

With Trucks band stalwarts Kofi Burbridge on keyboards and flute, Todd Smallie on bass and the powerful Yonrico Scott on drums, along with Tedeschi’s saxman Ron Holloway, the Melody Tent show Friday’s show was a blast furnace from beginning to end. And a late-set guest shot by opening act Scrapomatic, which includes Trucks band vocalist Mike Mattison, was a real treat.

By the time Tedeschi launched her version of Ray Charles’ ‘‘Tired of My Tears,’’ it was obvious the 1,800 fans were in for a special night. She turned the song into an exuberant blues shout, and jazz-inflected solos from Holloway, Tedeschi and Burbridge on organ extended it to Allmans-like length.

Tedeschi, looking svelte in black tee and jeans, absolutely owned Otis Redding’s ‘‘Security,’’ lacing her vocal with the grit needed to match the tune’s driving funk groove.

Tedeschi’s magnificent vocal prowess was evident on Fontella Bass’ ‘‘Soul of a Man;’’ she wailed so effortlessly that band members were exchanging looks of awe.

A new tune destined for that next CD, ‘‘I Can’t Sleep at Night,’’ took her into Little Milton’s realm of down-home R&B, while Tedeschi’s inner Al Green made ‘‘(I’m So) Alone’’ a stunning bit of Memphis-style soul.

The collaboration with vocalist Mike Mattison and guitarist Paul Olsen from Scrapomatic on ‘‘Gonna Move’’ was a vibrant gospel-blues, but it was Tedeschi’s poise that stood out. As Olsen tried to plug into bassist Smallie’s amp in the middle of the tune, he first got a blast of feedback, then dead silence. Embarrassed, Olsen looked like he wanted to find the nearest exit, but Tedeschi simply kept the song going and finally directed him to plug into her amp, where he provided a neat solo of his own.

There was a shimmering gospel take on Bob Dylan’s ‘‘Lord Protect My Child,’’ a ferocious charge through ‘‘Rock Me Right,’’ and a toe-tapping encore of ‘‘The Feeling Music Brings.’’ But perhaps that simple moment of graciousness toward Olsen, the younger musician, won Tedeschi more fans than anything else Friday night.

Excellent story: two nights ago, a pal of mine Mike Walsh was at Stop and Shop, waiting at the deli counter for his sub. He saw a short guy with longish hair wearing a "Crossroads" t-shirt and struck up a music conversation. The "Crossroads" shirt guy was very friendly, said he was at the show, it was great. My buddy Mike raved about Derek Trucks to him, and the guy then casually mentioned that he has played with Derek for 14 years. It was Todd Smallie, Derek's bassist. He continued to speak to Mike for a good 20 minutes, gave him his e-mail addy, and told him to drop him an e-mail. How cool is that?!?!?!

I wish I could had been at the Melody Tent Hyannis. They have some great shows there.
Todd Smallie is a great guy. He spent about 20 minutes with us at Wanee in front of the big stage while Govt Mule was playing. He always speaks to us at all the shows we go to.

Cape Cod is a beautiful place for some beautiful music............................

Thanks for posting this Eric!! What a fabulous time I had...The Cape Codders love Susan I tell ya! The entire family was sitting near me including Grandma and Grandpa... So cute! I had 2nd row and I thought it was 4th. Isle seat with that being the enter/exit row for the band!! Needless to say, they got their high 5's to and fro... Susan and I did the double handshake then she went right to the mic and said it's so great to have my family and friends here!!!

Standing ovations from a crowd that would sit mostly other than us die hards... When Susan said "For all of you that don't know, this is my husbands band with me" Well, I'd say the roof caved some from my YeeeeHowl that roared and she turned and laughed, heck we all did. It was a moment! LOL!

Still one of my all-time favorite live recordings! (Thanks to the kindness of susea!!! ) Just pryed this out of my brothers hands and reclaimed it over the weekend so it's been in the car for my travel-time listening pleasure.
