Everyone else love this movie ?

It is a mainstay on HBO, so I've been able to see it several times.

Written and directed by Tom Hanks, it is the story of a local rock and roll band in 1964 Erie, Pa called The Wonders, who have a surprise hit with a Beatles sounding song called That Thing You Do.

The movie highlights their lighting fast rise from playing the local pizza parlor to a radio sponsored rock show in Pittsburg to a record contract and state fair tour with the "Playtone Records Galaxy of Stars" to a one off shot on The "CBS Hollywood Showcase" and their quick implosion at the height of their 45's popularity. They become true "one hit wonders".

The reason I love this movie is that it is obvious that Tom Hanks is a huge music fan. There are so many references and in jokes from the rock and roll 60's that only a true music fan would think to include.

For example, there are many Beatles references and Tom Hanks, who plays their manager in the film, comes across as a Brian Epstein type of manager, masterfully controlling their image and the media to create and maximize quick popularity at the possible expense of their creative talent, a fact that eventually causes their guitarist and the talent of the band to quit, leading to the Wonder's demise.

But along the way, this movie is charming, touching, wonderfully historically accuate, and a true treat to anyone old enough to remember the many garage band "Beatles and Stones wannabes " that were so prolific during the mid 60's.

The teenager still in me fell in love with Liv Tyler during this movie. She is the perfect sweet, devoted, musician's girlfriend, and someone who truly loves and understands how special rock and roll is, a fact that is totally lost on Jimmy, the self absorbed guitarist and "talent " of the group. I would have gladly taken her off his hands in a second.

One very cool historically accurate touch. The band plays at The Ohio State Fair in Columbus, Ohio, and in a backstage scene, Tom Hanks tries to convince the popular DJ at 1230 WCOL AM to play the record.

1230 WCOL AM actually existed in Columbus. It was a very cool Top 40 rock and roll station that was THE music station here in the 60's and early 70's. How did Hanks know about it? I don't know but this is one of the obviously researched historical touches that help make this movie so special.

And the Hanks co-produced soundtrack not only features all the songs from the movie, but the insert is written as if Playtones records and the groups in the movie actually existed. Very cool.

And I just remembered one more clever music in joke: the poor Wonders Bass player, in the traditional of bass players sometimes not getting the proper respect, does not even have a name in the movie. In the "where are they now?" segment at the end of the movie, he is referred to as T.B. Player (The Bass Player.... ).

Anyone else love this movie as much as I do?

Yeah, I've seen it a few times & I think it's great also. I remember that era as a little kid following my teenage uncles around. My mother managed a record dept., so there was lots of music around the house.

The movie is very well done. I fell for Liz, also!

By the way, the soundtrack is still available from Amazon .com. It is a cool thing to have if you loved the movie. Hanks co-produced it and co-wrote 4 of the songs !

The insert is written as if Playtones records and the groups in the movie actually existed. Very cool and well done.

Luv this movie! So does my wife, and both of my daughters who are 19 and 23. As a guitar gearhead-geek, the musical scenes are extremely accurate as well. I believe that they actually learned to play the instruments before filming. The songs are perfect "60s one hit wonders" type tunes as well: they stick in your head for a long time.

Great, fun, easy 1.5 hours!

Also, the scene with the band playing in the Italian restauraunt hits home with every bar band musician - it's as true to life as "Bob's Country Bunker" is in the Blues Brothers ("chicken wire ????"). The rhythm guitarist is very funny in the movie, and the "bass player"....I love that he doesn't have a name - it's a perfect reflection on the way all bass players get no respect. (Q: What do you call that guy who hangs around with musicians? A: The Bass Player!). Also, the Bass Player is Rusty in "Vegas Vacation", another of my favorite movies.

All around great flick!

Phillyguyxyz: You just reminded me about another cool realistic touch in this movie.

In the beginning and during the first few gigs, Lenny is playing a really cheap looking guitar. It almost looks like one of those Silvertone models that Sears used to sell. The bass player has a cheapy as well. Jimmy is playing a Les Paul Jr. which was a budget priced Gibson model at the time.

After a couple of gigs on the State Fair tour, Lenny now has a Fender Jaguar, Jimmy has a Rickenbacker, and the bass player is now sporting a Fender Jazz bass. Their manager Mr White obviously upgraded their instruments as soon as they had more available cash.

These are the types of small touches that help make this movie so enjoyable to a serious music fan.

Great, Great fun movie.

Lenny is a clown and very funny.

The whole Del Paxton storyline with the drummer/Guy Patterson . When Dell asks him if he wants to lay down some tracks ! He's beside himself .

Liv Tyler as Faye , what more can ya say.

I really love this movie, some very funny lines in there as well.

Mr White (Tom Hanks): "It's very important you don't stink today."
Lenny: "Hey, I make no guarantees."

-----------------------------

Lenny: "Oh, I'm not here with these fellas. I got a pig in competition over at the livestock pavilion and I am gonna win that blue ribbon."

Many others...

I Love this Movie!

One of my favorite lines went something like this,

Guy Pattison was drunk and he says to Del Paxton,
"I have all your records........You Are My Biggest Fan!"

Another great Del Paxton quote during that same conversation with Guy as they were saying goodbye:

"You keep playin'...and you watch your money. You'll land on your feet."
