Anybody who was around in the early days knew Charles who grew up in Augusta with Willie P. and the Lyndon brothers. If you read No Saints, No Saviors, you will know that he was Willie's quiet right hand man who kept good track of the money and never, ever assumed the airs of an aid to rock stars.
Charles took his own life this morning. He is the last of the Augusta boys; the sweetest of men whose job (among many) was to watch over me so the wolves so they never got at me (no offense to the travelling brotherhood at the time).
Pleaase pray for his soul, his friend William, his girlfriend, his family.
Chaz, I don't know what demons took you but you will be missed. Of the early guys, he was the only one with the sense to save and invest his money. The doctor I work for says that he's never seen a Brinx Truck (those that transport big money to banks and such) following a hearse.. But, Charles had much more. He was one of the sweetest men I have ever met.
Goodbye Charles.

Very sorry to hear this -- I know from reading No Saints No Saviors that Willie thought the world of Charles, and that he was a good man.

You can find Charles at the upper right hand corner on the inside of Brothers and Sisters. I believe that's Lamar next to him along with Jaimoe's dog and the infamous but beloved Mr. Callahan. JD and Dickey are right below him.

I am just floating through space, unable to comprehend this loss. It was damn near every morning for the past 10 or so years that Willie would pick Charles up (he lived about 5 minutes away in Macon-and even tho Charles had 3 or 4 cars, it was always Willaim who'd come fetch)) and they'd run their "errands" (the bank, lunch, oil change, check of old used cars to play around with). What a profound loss for Charles' family and his lady Carol; but an everyday buddy to Willie. I am at a loss at how one fills up a hole left in one's life as important as Chaz was to his best and most loving friend Wiliam.

I remember having lunch with Carol and Charles about 10 years ago and I hadn't seen him since 1974 - he says "Gosh, I remember YOU!".

You know, it's a shame that people never considered Charles "important" cuz he kept a low profile. He ws a member of the family, nonetheless.
Eveni if you didn't know who he was or cared who he was, an RIP, a prayer is always appropriate and appreciated.
How many of you KNEW who Buffalo Evans was - and how may of you really know who Callahan, Kim, Twiggs, Willie P., JoeDan, Phil or Alan Walden, Red Dog (well, nevermind, he IS legendary!!! LOL). All of these guys were just pictures on album covers or maybe you saw them luggging an equipment case once or twice (in Charles and Willie's case, a briefcase). Scooter Herring, is another story, "the bad guy". Scooter was a solid dude who did was he was hired to do and made sure the band never overdid it, cuz if they did what they wanted to do, they would have been called the Noseless Allman Brolthers Band.
Is anybody out there? Duane always made sure the crew got paid FIRST because without them, they'd be no band. Shame. They all had diferent talents - now JD could play a mean bass, but the other dudes had talent too - whether it were sound or whathaveyou. And of course, there was the Almost Brothers Band but that's another thread.
These days we have Kirk West. Other than keep people away from the back door and make little marks on passes, he isn't given credit for much of what he does except dress exceptionally.
Long live the brotherhood. ALL OF EM.

If nothing else, let his passing teach us all a lesson about suicide. We may think it's a god way out of our pain - sure is - problem is, we leave everybody behind to deal with OUR pain and our problems AND the loss of a loved one.

I just got in, drunk as a sailor...trying to drown out the pain of losing a friend. Rest easy, Charles. I know you will.

Sorry I'm not that familiar with his name or his importance in the world he surrounded himself in, but that doesn't make him less 'important'. And although he is not a name or a person I am familiar with, I still feel for him and his family and friends. It sounds like he left a lot of loved ones behind.

RIP finally, Charles Bignon.

I'm so sorry to hear about this.

Suicide truly does affect everyone who knew the person who takes their own life. I didn't know Charles obviously, but it is obvious that this is affecting you as well. So I'm sending prayers and thought's to Charles' loved ones and to you as well.

My sincere condolences.

Elizabeth, and Willie P., and all of Charles Bignon's friends and family - I am truly saddened at the news of his death. As was said, he really was one of the nicest people you would ever meet or know. He was quiet, kind, gentle, and a most decent man and friend. I know that our friend Willie is hurting today for the lost of his long-time friend, and I wish I could help take some of that pain away from him and from Elizabeth, too, and from his sweet girlfriend of many years, Carol. My heart is with all of you especially tonight.
Back when I first was going through all of what I had to go through in December, I got a note in the mail from Willie and Charles, with a donation to help me out. No strings, just a kind and sweet way to say to a friend that they cared. For having known Charles Bignon in my life, I will be eternally thankful.
Take time to tell the ones you love that you love them. God bless your gentle soul, Charles.
Willie Howard (from Mayberryetta, a suburb of Hot'lanta)

Rest now, Charles Bignon, be at peace. Suicide is a terrible answer for those left behind. My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of Charles.

Charles was laid to rest today. I know he is close to his maker; close to his brothers who have gone before him; released from his pain.
Prayers for peace for those he has left behind - Carol and Willie, most of all.
Indeed, Bill, he was a gentle soul.

Dreaming about Charles and Willie last night. Don't remember exactly what. Listening to those two old guys jaw as they drove around on their daily errands was always a hoot; Charles had to sit in the front seat (bad hip injury in the army way back when precluded his ability to sit in the back). They often sounded like a couple of old ladies; just old ladies with way deep voices and thick Southern accents (somehow Charles' drawl was thicker than Willie's but when they got together, they'd seeem to be trying to outdo each other with the syrupy speech).
And they'd talk about some of the most mundane things - but once in awhile there'd be a "Eeeew weee, remember when........" and then a story from "back in the day" would emerge, prompting a big ole smile from the Yankee lady in the back seat.
Don't know where he is, but I'm sure he's OK.
