Proposed Atlanta Bill Would Ban Baggy Pants
POSTED: 6:56 am EDT August 23, 2007
UPDATED: 6:58 am EDT August 23, 2007
ATLANTA -- Baggy pants that show boxer shorts or thongs would be illegal
under a proposed amendment to Atlanta's indecency laws.
The amendment, sponsored by Atlanta city councilman C.T. Martin, states
that sagging pants are an "epidemic" that is becoming a "major concern"
around the country.
Martin said he doesn't want young people thinking that being half-dressed
is the way to go.
The proposed ordinance would also bar women from showing the strap of a
thong beneath their pants.
The proposed ordinance states that "the indecent exposure of his or her
undergarments" would be unlawful in a public place. It would go in the
same portion of the city code that outlaws sex in public.
Martin said the penalty would be a fine.
But American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia executive director Debbie
Seagraves said any legislation that creates a dress code would not survive
a court challenge. She said the law could not be enforced in a
nondiscriminatory way because it targets something that came out of the
black youth culture.
Martin said he plans to hold public hearings and vet the proposal through
churches, civil rights groups and neighborhood organizations. The proposal
will get its first public airing next Tuesday in the City Council's Public
Safety Committee.
Thank God or Marx, or whomever, now he has a much more serious issue to ponder...as a troll thread reader. I wonder now if wearing baggy pants while expressing yourself publicly is truly more offensive than wearing baggy pants while executing dogs, since dogs are not that important. ____________________ Mecca Delendum Est

let me just say that I am against this legislation.
If we can't have a thong strap or a blue thong under white pants to look at...boy, what is this world coming to. ____________________

I'm against it simply because enacting laws for something like this is simply ridiculous. I'm not a fan of droopy drawers, but it doesn't require enacting a law to prohibit it. ____________________

Yeah, there are still some antiquated sodomy laws still in effect here. I don't think they are enforced. ____________________

No, the Ga Supreme Ct ruled the sodomy statute unconstitutional. Now, perhaps before I die, I can buy beer on Sunday here. ____________________

carlos, i really wish you would stop calling out Wotty like this.
but regardless,
i dont know that it should be 'banned', as it is the style of the time.
but i will say that whenever i see someone wearing their drawers down to their knees and they have to stand there and hold them, i think "what is the point"?? Most of these guys want to be seen as gangbangers or whatever, but i wonder how they expect to hold a gun, and their pants at the same time?
i say let them wear them the way they want, it is easier for me to decide who to talk to and who not to. anyone wearing their pants like that is an idiot and not deserving of my time.

p.s. Up in Philly this fad was done a few years ago. i am real surprised to see it still so big down South. its soooooooo last year....... ____________________ you know there just ain't no telling

A lot of towns in Louisiana are passing similar laws. I don't really know where I stand. I don't think we should be telling people how to dress. But I've seen enough black asses and boxers down here to last a lifetime.
I've wondered, too, how you can be such a tough guy when you have to use one hand to hold your pants up. I agree it helps us identify the morons.
Carlos, what's up with you calling out John Wott in these thread titles? What has he done to you? And what does this accomplish, besides making you look childish? ____________________

not particularly decent of anyone to use someone's name on a thread to attack them...i wish this would stop---there's enough arguing & fighting on these threads--why add to it or continue it--i'm no innocent but we should try our best to get along...
as for the pants--i don't dig the look but i don't want any law or anyone tellin me what to wear---perhaps they'll ban stuff i grew up getting an earful for--- i.e. long hair(people were ready to kill others for this)---so i'm not comfortable banning other's style of dress even if i dislike it....now can't you,at least, remove the name from this thread & can't we all just try to get along?? ____________________ dadof2 |

I agree with Linnie on this. I don't like censorship in any form. Linnie, as one who grew up in the South, we were always several years behind in styles. I don't know why. Maybe we had to wear out our old clothes and the ones we got from our older cousins. Southeast Florida is usually right in style, but these kids still wear their baggy, draggy pants here. And I still don't understand why carlos is calling out John Wott. ____________________

Just tell them their pants are falling down and their ball hat is crooked, Drives them crazy.
I pull my nephew's pants down all the time in front of the family. I always say "I thought you needed help.". Pisses him off every time. I also put a curve on the bill of his ball hats. I am a pain but I am also bigger than him.
As for laws, I would be against it. Don't appreciate any form of government telling me what to wear or how to look.
On the Carlos vs Wott front, it really makes you seem rather foolish and immature Carlos. Not that you seem to care. It suprises me because you always came across as a much better person than that. |
