I always enjoy hearing Little Martha on the house PA after an ABB show. Can someone tell me when and why the tradition got started?

I think they've always done it as a tribute to Duane and to remember that he is, was, and will always be the founding spirit of the band.

I always thought it would be nice tribute to Duane if the tapers included Little Martha on their recordings.

I don't recall which show it was, but I was listening to an early 70's show, and at the end, you can hear LM begin. I think the tradition goes back to within a year or two after DA passed.

I remember that for a good while after Duane left us his microphone was still set up on stage for the shows.

The notes are on Duane's headstone. Didn't he write it?

Duane did write it, after a dream in which Jimi Hendrix played the song on a water faucet, or so I've heard. Sounds weird, but makes sense in a kind of "dream logic" way.

Many tapers do indeed include "Little Martha" at the end of their recordings, and I like that.

Speaking of Little Martha. How many of you folks have dogs??????

We just played this last night off the XM show of Then and Again. Everytime we played this
song over the years when it comes to the doorbell part, My dogs will bark like hell thinking someone is at the door. Friends that hear it also will say the doorbell is ringing. I laugh and explain that its in the song............I love the amazed look on their faces.

Do your dogs do the same????

Hey there sweet family,

When Rowland and I got married Kirk escorted me up the aisle to "Little Martha". We (Rowland and I) thought it would be a nice change to have it played at the beginning of something, rather than the end. It worked out great :-)

Take care and know that you are loved,

Lana

I never walk away from a show, until Little Martha has completed and give one more round of applause. I feel kinda like its the National Anthem for Peachriots.

There is a tape of Duane playing backstage with some other members being rascals. I can't answer if there is actually an on-stage perfromance.

Fleetwood Mac picked up the tradition, doing a similar thing with Peter Green's "Albatross", it's played over the PA as the houselights come up.

I've heard it teased before (during Otiel's bass solo, 3-25-04) Have they ever played it live?

The current lineup has played it a couple of times (at least once at the Beacon) and I think it has been played with Dickey in the band. I was asking about Duane performing it live.

Albatross is a song I've always wanted to hear the Brothers cover!

Some tapers do tape it or at least a part of it. It all depends on how fast they have to break down their gear.

I believe this is in Birmingham, Al. where Kirk West had set up some mics in a Hotel Room. Duane can be heard in the background playing "Little Martha" over and over and explaining that it's roots come from the Scottish Highlands..
Yes, "Little Martha" was played quite a Bit on the '93 tour with Dickey and Warren. On 5/23/93, Dickey says.."We may not say this everytime, But we'd like to dedicate this to the late Great Duane Allman"...pretty cool.

Kirk West wasn't around at that time. He didn't know Duane.

Under the Music link to the right there used to be some sound bytes & one was of the Brothers playing Little Martha. Dickey says something to the tune that they don't play it often, & in a somehwat aggravated tone says he's not going to play it again (I thought). It is a beautiful rendition though.

I heard the ABB do the song at the NOJF and, as Dickey announced, here's a tune that
we have'nt played in many years...and played LM. It got a standing ovation and was beautiful. I think that was in '90 or 91. I talked to Dickey later and he said they had not played it since Duane passed. Very cool indeed....
jammin for Duane,

Little Martha was debuted live in New Orleans on 4/23/93 - just Dickey and Warren - it was nice that they did it but they did not do it well that night . . .
