LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Rock band Van Halen has reunited with the group's original singer David Lee Roth for their first tour together in more than 20 years, they announced on Monday at a news conference.

Van Halen, with David Lee Roth (2nd from right), got together in 1996 for the MTV Video Music Awards.

Roth, 52, spoke virtually nonstop at the press event, promising that the band's upcoming 25-date North American trek was merely the precursor to a world tour and to a new album.
"This is not like the Police," Roth said, referring to another band that recently papered over personality differences to launch a one-off reunion tour. "The idea is that this will continue on and on and on."
"We think we got it right this time," Roth added. "You come and judge the performance harshly, please. I beg you, come on down and see."
The 25-date trek begins on September 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and wraps up on December 11 in the Canadian city of Calgary. Key stops include Chicago (October 16, 18), New York City (November 13) and their native Los Angeles (November 20)
But it will not exactly be a reunion of the classic lineup famed for such hits as "Panama" and "Runnin' with the Devil," because bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son, Wolfgang.
Roth heaped praise on the band's newest member, claiming Wolfgang picked the songs the band will perform, and "brings a young energy and a spirit to this that'll knock you out of your socks."
Asked about Anthony's absence, Roth said, "This is not a reunion. This is a new band. ... Usually when a band comes back like us it's rockers with walkers and this is everything but. Meet us in the future, not the past."
Roth and Van Halen were supposed to hit the road earlier this year for a reunion tour, but plans fell through when Eddie Van Halen entered rehab in March for undisclosed issues. His illness also scuttled a potential reunion at the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction later that month.
Roth, now 52, quit Van Halen in 1985, during the band's heyday, in hopes of attaining solo stardom. After some initial hits, those dreams crashed and Van Halen continued successfully with Sammy Hagar on vocals.
The band's luck ran out a decade later when Hagar and Van Halen acrimoniously parted ways, and a new album with a third singer tanked. Since then, both Roth and Hagar have briefly aligned with Van Halen, and the two singers even toured together, despite Roth's barely concealed enmity for Hagar. E-mail to a friend

Who cares !!!! Roth can't sing for his life anymore. This tour will be a joke. Wait for the reviews to start coming in.

HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT? Even if DIAMOND DAVE can't sing, I bet he can still JUMP! And what about EDDIE? He's supernatural! All cleaned up, he'll be rareing to shred a wicked guitar! I say: BRING IT ON!

I think there are enough old fans that will make this tour a sell out. I was lucky to have seen the last 3 tours VH did with Roth and I seen Roth's first solo tour which may have been better than any of the VH tours. Most of my friends missed out and talk about how much they wish they could had seen the band back then. The same goes for Kiss I seen the last tour they did with Ace in 1979 and all my friends said they would have done anything to had seen them with Ace. When Kiss did their reunion tour they were the first in line for tickets and I'm sure it will be the same with VH. People wanting a part of a memory even if it's tainted or not they still feel like something has been missing.

I don't care if Wolfy is Jaco reincarnate, I won't go see them without MA. I'll catch them on Youtube.

I respect your opinion. I've never seen them in any of their incarnations and my feeling is: Better late than never! Just the fact they're getting back together is an accomplishment and is worth some attention, imho. I have high standards too but sometimes, I just have to give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm all about the good times.

I see their first date is in Charlotte.... I don't know if I want to shell out big bucks to see them get the rust off.

That's just it. I saw VH "back in the day" with DLR....1980 and 1981. They sucked the first time...DLR was apparently drunk, but in 1981, they smoked. I never saw them with Sammy, although I loved the Sammy era as well. MA ws a staple in both incarnations of the band. It just doesn't seem right to replace him with a....kid....even if it is EVH's son. It's nepotism at it's worst. It's just not right....and like you said, that is MHO.

I agree on the nepotism but I'm willing to go along with EDDIE for a while. He knows EVERYONE expects WOLFIE to suck. What if he's really good? In rock n roll, there's always a chance something magic might happen.

There is some serious irony in fans on an Allman Brothers forum saying that won't see another band because a living original isn't playing with them (without giving the newbie a chance). There's also some irony in us calling it out as nepotism. Think about it.

I'm disapointed it doesn't include Anthony, and I'm also not so thrilled after seeing Roth's voice on youtube clips from the past 8 years. However, not sure I'll be able to stay away.

I saw VH with Roth once and with Hagar twice. The first 4 or 5 VH albums were just amazing...

I knew I'd be called out on that, Tim.

OK, my justification....MA isn't dead. He wasn't booted for bad behavior. Eddie just has a bad attitude because MA played with and is buds with Sammy. Ed and Al don't want MA to play with anyone but VH. If you're a professional musician and you haven't done anything but sit on your ass, wouldn't you be itchin' to get out there and do SOMETHING?

As for the nepotism similarity, I got nothin'.

Yeah, it's like putting Derek in for Dickey.

It's like putting Dickey's son in for Dan Toler.

It's like putting Johnny Van Zant in for Ronnie Van Zant.

Uh, for the record, Derek played WITH Dickey. He didn't replace him.

You got me on the other two.

I'm definitely on the fence with this one. I've seen mixed reviews of the state of Roth's voice over the past several years, and the lack of Michael Anthony's backup vox ( a big loss in and of itself) will probably only exacerbate the situation.
However, Eddie is one of my favorite guitarists and seeing them do some of the classic stuff would be a treat.
I guess I'll have to wait to see some reviews before I can make a decision based on the sound and performance.
Also, I'm expecting ticket prices to be astronomical, so that may deter me too.
As far as Roth's statement about this being a "new band" and an ongoing thing, I have my doubts. The venom that was spewed from both sides after the collaboration for the "Best of..." album led me to believe they'd never want to step foot in the same room again, much less continue to work together. It'll be interesting to see how they address that in the press, and how the band dynamic develops as they spend more time together.
In any case, I wish them the best of luck and hope that whatever happens will lead to more Eddie Van Halen music in the future.

This is what Roth looked like and sounded like eight years ago. What makes you think it will be any better now??? I saw him in 1993 and he was terrible then. I'll pass on this tour.

They would have been better off hiring this guy than bringing in Roth at this stage. This guy sounds more like vintage Roth than Roth does.

. . . . and I seen Roth's first solo tour which may have been better than any of the VH tours. . .

I remember that first DLR tour fondly as well as the "1984" VH tour. For both of which, I "camped" out (i.e., slept with blanket and chair in my place in line). Remember those days of camping out for tickets? That DLR band with Steve Vai on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass was simply on fire. It's as if DLR was trying to out-VH the actual VH with a vengeance.
