NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Van Halen will announce a 50-date American reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth during a news conference in Hollywood next week, sources said.

The arena trek will begin in early October.

Roth, who split from the rock group in the mid-1980s in hopes of solo stardom, will reunite with co-founders Eddie Van Halen on guitar and brother Alex Van Halen on drums. Eddie's teenage son Wolfgang will sub for Michael Anthony on bass.

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by the group never got off the ground, with Eddie Van Halen entering a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March.

In the months since, the guitarist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

Van Halen last toured in 2004, with Roth's replacement, vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

So what,
Roth's a washed up hack and Eddie plays the same licks over and over. Other than that not a bad band. Saw them in 1982.

I'll go...........when Michael Anthony is playing bass.

How can they call it a reunion tour without all four original members?

Probably, but he'll most likely hit puberty in the middle of the tour and become a baritone. Or the Jack Daniels may cause the voice change.

I agree. I'm not interested until Mad Anthony is part of it.
Without him, the vocals will SUCK.

I did....twice....in 1980 and 1981. The 1980 show sucked. Roth appeared to be stinky drunk. The 1981 show, however, rocked.

The problem is that David Lee Roth in 2007 isn't the same David Lee Roth from 1987. He never was a great singer, but he was passable for rock & roll.

These days hitting any sort of high note just isn't part of his bag of tricks...as was evident 10 or so years ago when he recorded those two throwaway tracks on one of VH's Greatest Hits packages.

Me too. But I'll believe it when I see it. A week is a long long time in the VH universe - plenty of time for this to fall apart. And even if they make it through the press conference next week, that still leaves a couple months before the alleged tour kicks off for the whole thing to fall apart.

I still can't believe that the VH brothers managed to eff this thing up (actually, I can believe it considering who we're talking about). But a lot of people have waited 22 years to see the original lineup play together again, with a few teases and false-starts along the way (e.g., 1996, 2000, 2002). Then they can't even manage to show up at the RnR HOF induction ceremony. And now this debacle.

I do wonder what they're going to do about the background vocals. Female backup singers, a la Motley Crue and the Black Crowes? That seems a bit stupid given the lyrical content. There've been rumors that they're going to pipe in Mikey's vox by pre-recordings like they've done with the keyboards over the past 15 years, but I don't see how they can do that unless they play all the songs with a click track. It's one thing to play along with pre-recorded keys the whole song, but to time everything for background vox to come in at the right moment? I don't see it happening. The band will also need flexibility to cover for Dave's singing errors, so I just don't see every song being done with a click-track and piped-in background vox. It was easier with the keys when you had the reliability of Sam or Gary Cherone singing, but this is DLR we're talking about.

I guess in the end I'll still go sans Mikey, assuming tix aren't priced like The Police or Rolling Stones.

"Roth's a washed up hack and Eddie plays the same licks over and over." Alas, you are right grasshopper. However, the magic of one EVH is not necessarily in his solo playing but hidden deep within the genius of his rthymn playing. Combine with the skin skills of his older brother, and the vocals of the sadly missed Mr. Anthony, and you have the unique sound of classic Van Halen. A sound which once was as recognizable as that of are favorites known as the ABB. And lastly, let me suggest you listen closely to the last complete VH record, recorded with Gary Cherone on vocals. While a record with numerous problems, you will find Edward soaring to new hights with some new sounds and solos. Not to mention, new inspiration.***

***These are the opinions of a one time Van Halen freak who is now sadly disenchanted with the current line-up of a once great band and should not be taken seriously.....

"Balance" was a good album. Dare I say GREAT album. Great production, lots of tasty guitar licks, decent song writing, Sammy and Mike's vocals (and EVH actually contributes a third part to the vocal harmonies.) Anyone heard the track, "Amsterdam?"

Half of Balance was as good as half of any other VH record they ever made. But the two pop songs ("Can't Stop Loving You" and "Not Enough") was too "Journey" for me and took the band to a new low as far as that stuff goes. I know they were hits, but REO Speedwagon had hits too and that doesn't make 'em good. "Strung Out" and "Doing Time" were just filler, and "Baluchitherium" was meant to have vocals but they never finished it with Sammy. But the rest of the album - the other 7 tunes - are awesome and as good as anything VH ever did. It also had the best production/sound of any VH record, I think. And the outtake ("Crossing Over") that was only released in Japan is a great song too. Great album, anf oft-overlooked.

Yes, agreed. "Balance" was a good album with very good production (finally.....)While Amsterdam contains great music, the lyrics are in my opinion, stupid. Edward just kicks ass on this tune. And how about the solo in "Feeling." Just off the charts! I recall watching him play it live in the Toronto PPV and he looks like he could play that **** in his sleep despite him being all over the neck. When he's sober, and frankly even **** -faced back in the day, the guy is just amazing to watch. Or sadly, was.....Hope he's got his **** together for this tour

I too would prefer Michael Anthony but I do admit I won't miss the bass solo. Mindless noise that he did for their entire career.
