I'm sure this topic has been covered before, but I have been listening to a couple of 2001 shows that are really outstanding. Maybe it was the freshness of having Warren back and a fairly heavy dose of Chuck. 05 & 06 really Hit the Note as well.

Many of you are much more knowlegable than I and I'd like to get more perspective. Condsider the entire body of work, not just one show. Sit In's, new covers, setlist variety, fresh takes on old tunes, etc.

Cheers.

As someone who has seen multiple shows of every Beacon run since they started it, I personally would probably rate them this way to the best of my ability...at least the top 8 anyway. There is no question 2006 was the best run of them all and could probably never be topped IMO. 2003 thru 2005 were also all off the charts with great playing, cool guests and a really nice mix of songs to make each show a completely different experience. The other years not listed after my top 8 are just too close to call really. Regardless of the ranking though, every year is special and the whole experience is always something not to be forgotten...

1. 2006
2. 2005
3. 2004
4. 2003
5. 1998
6. 1996
7. 2007
8. 2001

2006.

The only one I've been to.

3/18/06 was one of the three best ABB shows I've ever seen.

I would have to say 2006. I was lucky to catch the Rossington/Frampton show, and then saw the off the charts best of the best, The 35th anniversary Fillmore show where they played the entire Fillmore album start to finish and that was just the first half of the show!!.

Ok, maybe I'm a purist, but I have to agree with Rydthewind with 1999. Few, if any, guests - just ABB at a very high level. Absolutely loved Pearson too. Thought 1998 was sick as well. Here's a taste of 1999... I mean, look at the 2nd set. Does it really get any better???:

1. Don't Want You No More
2. It's Not My Cross To Bear
3. Stand Back
4. Good Times (Don't Fade Away)
5. Please Call Home
6. I'm Not Crying
7. One Way Out
8. Black Hearted Woman
9. J.J.'s Alley
Set II:
Acoustic:
10. Seven Turns
11. Melissa
Electric:
12. Sailin' 'Cross The Devil's Sea
13. Blue Sky
14. Leave My Blues at Home
15. Stormy Monday
16. Les Brers In A Minor
17. Revival
Encore:
18. Southbound
19. Whipping Post

Does it get any better?...yes, it does. Besides 3/13/06, the following Beacon show - 3/21/05 - is not only quite possibly the Best Beacon show ever, but in many opinions in the top post-Duane era shows of all time.

This show is 3 hours long and chock full of great songs including an extemely rare acoustic "Little Martha".. Chuck Leavell also plays on numerous songs including "Blue Sky". This is the one where you can really say "it just doesn't get any better"... The level of playing at this show is so hot, it will melt your CD player...just scorching.

3/19/05 is much better than 3/21/05. Honestly. If you don't believe me, just listen to it!

1996 is also one of the best runs I've ever heard, along with the first half of 2006.

Agreed 3.21.05 is my favorite.
I've burned dozens of copies for people - some musicians which had no idea of what the "new" Brothers were capable of. The 3.22 Big House show couldn't live up to the 3.21 performance.

i love 3.21.05, but erek breaks a string into his Jessica solo. while i love ther recovery by Warren, it's turns a a+ 100% show into a a+ 99% show.

the set list from 99 was awesome. i'll take that any night and walk away beaming. my favorites have been:

1999
2006
1997
1996
2007.

my worst were 2000 and 2001. dickey was off in 2000 and i was still in mourning from dickey's depature in 2001. though i do see that it was one of the few times that warren and derek played high falls, which i'm craving to hear again.

if you want to get more specific, there is no better arrangement of Blue Sky than the 2000 shows. If you want a case study in solo construction by a band, just listen to 3.20.00. Derek and the band were in complete unison and there are about 7 different parts of his solo. i've listened to this solo over 100 times and it blows my mind away every time. i'll start a new thread about it.
