And your point is?

Clueless iPod listeners pollute air with noise

By Erin Carlson

Associated Press

Published on: 08/05/2007
New York - Dave Legeret silently fumed as the man seated beside him on the plane blasted techno music on his iPod at full volume.

"It was kind of rude," recalled Legeret, 38, a jewelry designer from Sandy Hook, Conn., who was forced to listen while flying from New York City to Disney World with his wife and 8-year-old son. "Listen to it at a level that just you can hear it and everyone else doesn't have to be subject to it."

Apple Inc.'s ubiquitous iPod is best known as an instrument of solitude - unless the user ignores standards of etiquette by invading the eardrums of fellow commuters, officemates or other innocent bystanders. Then it starts to get annoying. Especially when you're stuck in close proximity.

Amped to its highest volume, the iPod is not nearly as invasive as the classic loud cellphone conversation. But it can have its moments. Like when you're standing in an elevator at 9 a.m. and a co-worker cranks up Amy Winehouse's "Rehab." (Too early for that song.) Or when an ear-budded subway rider belts what sounds like a Whitney Houston tune with careless abandon, causing other riders to inch away or flee into another car altogether. (True story.)

"I've heard that problem quite a lot, people singing along," said Leander Kahney, managing editor of Wired magazine's Web site. "And, of course, my kids, when they have the iPod in, they shout. They don't realize with the headphones they're being too loud, so they'll conduct conversations without taking their ear buds out. And they're yelling."

In places and spaces where silence is golden - planes, trains and office cubicles, for example - even the slightest thump-thump-thump of bass can feel like a violation.

And then there's the impromptu-karaoke problem. Kahney said a colleague at Wired, which covers technology and how it affects culture, has a bad habit of crooning to his playlist at work.

Any Celine Dion in the mix? "Oh no, he listens to these dreadful old hippie songs," he said. "You know, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Allman Brothers."

All is forgiven after a friendly tap on the shoulder, Kahney said. A less confrontational approach may be in order, though, when someone refuses to cooperate.

Anna Post, an etiquette instructor at the Emily Post Institute, said she'd heard a story about a woman who asked an iPod-using subway rider to turn down the volume, only to have her request ignored. So she used another tactic: singing along to the music.

"And all of a sudden, boy, did that iPod get shut off," said Post, who stressed that "a little social shame can go a long way."

Of course, many iPod noise polluters should be given the benefit of the doubt. They might be unaware that the volume is up so high.

If the noise is bothersome, Post said it's OK to speak up because most people would be hard-pressed not to listen. If they don't, just "grin and bear it and let it go and just be the bigger person," she advised.

Or get an iPod of your own.

Just to give an example of what we are up against here. If you put 100 people in a room and announced that the Eagles were playing down the street to the South and the Allmans were playing up the street to the North. 100 peeps, randomly chosen, the #'s would probably be 85/15 in favor of the Eagles.... so sad.

As long as enough choose the Allmans so that they can keep it going, that's fine with me.

Nothing wrong with the Eagles.

In 03, we put an Eagles show in between the ABB and DB shows we saw that summer.

It's all good.

Except for rap.

As long as I can get up front for the ABB, fine with me.

i just wanted to say that jaminrebel, you seem like quite a retard. I've seen your other posts, so its not a response, but you're just a f'ckin retard. And Dickey is doing some great stuff. Really great stuff. And the new ABB too. Its all got a jazz-fusion tint to it like Duane would have liked.

WHAT?? excuse me while I take my headphones out of my ears. I never thought of myself being a listener of old dreaded hippie songs. Some folks just dont have a clue. These folks must die for Donny and Marie Osman. I really dont care what other people think about the ABB's.
I know I have loved them my whole life, someones elses opinion will not sway mine at all....

Now back to our regular scheduled program.........................

Cell phone conversations may be allowed in-flight soon. Look out for Battle Royale on every flight if this happens.

The 85 Eagles fans would politely sit and clap, while the 15 Allman Brothers Band fans would be standing, dancing, air guitaring, screaming and yelling and having a freakin' blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty much the same here, but I expect it would be closer to 95/5 in favor of the Eagles. About 99/1 (who might that be? ) for Skynyrd. Sad but true.

And, yes, a lot of people do think of the ABB as old hippie crap. Doesn't mean you have to agree. I could think of a few words to describe most of the current "rock" but they are not exactly suitable for this website.

Hey, I'm actually one of those people who actually likes to listen to that "old hippie crap", as some people may call it. But to me, music made after 1975 is either using music made "before" 1975 as their main influences (which is mostly a "good" thing) or else it's mostly over-produced crap. Seriouly, can anybody tell me any new, totally orginal style of music that has emerged after 1975 that's worth listening to?

1,tandan,i'm working on it.slowly putting my abb collection on my 60 gig ipod.i have 230 disc on my ipod, with only 11 different groups, mostly, abb, gratefulldead, mule, phil and friends, and then i'm getting other assorted stuff on.and so far ive only used 12 gig.they are great for traveling.allthough not completly windows friendly though.
2,i to am glad that 80 to 90 percent of the peaple like the eagles better.just think how hard it would be to get tickets if the abb were in the range of the gratefull dead in the 90's,i stopped going in the end becouse the crowds got so bad.i think the abb fanbase is perfect.
3,as to new music...the way the abb and the mule are gettin'tighter and tighter, you could allmost call them new groups.as compared to 10 years ago.
take care all,matt
