Check it out! Among other things, I talk about the 10,000 Lakes Festival in this one.

Enjoy!

Great column, Rob! I don't know whether to hate you more for your writing abilities or for all the shows you attend! Great stuff!

I am writing a Jam Band Opera. It's called "An Aquarium full of Left over Dead Tuna Phish."

A great read, thanks Rob!
quote:
Something special happened at the Variety Playhouse on June 22nd, and I think you should know about it. Iíve always enjoyed Railroad Earth, but Iím not the biggest bluegrass fan, and I never thought Iíd consider them one of the greatest bands on Earth. However, after this show, I have no choice but to acknowledge them as one of the most powerful musical forces around.

Just curious if your love for Railroad Earth has caused you to look for any other bluegrass influenced bands, and if so, who? I think of all the sets I missed at this year's 'Roo, I was most disappointed to miss Railroad Earth. Someday.

Not trying to drag you further into the bluegrass world, but if you aren't familiar with Three Ring Circle, you may want to give 'em a whirl. In this side project, it's more like a couple of monster bluegrass pickers + the wonderful Dave Pomeroy on bass, = an acoustic jam band with a touch of jazz. I've seen them twice here & have their album - really dig 'em. I think they would go over well at Bonnaroo &/or other festivals.
Their press page writeup by Downbeat & others, can do them more justice than my words. Also sound samples from their album there.

Hated to hear about the airlines snaffu causing you to miss Zappa Plays Zappa - would've liked to of read your take on that.
