If you are posting here, it means you love this band and, as such, you are allowed to some fun at their expense once in a while...

I am curious what we all think the band's worst songs are. Not just ABB, but also the solo projects and the off-shoots (Mule, Sea Level, DTB, etc)...

Here are some that really clunk:
1) Midnight Man - God-awful tune...
2) Sarod & Sarod (Outro) - I never understood why these songs were on the record.
3) Bad Little Doggie - One song I never liked.
4) Under the Guns of Love - Can we say "80's?"
5) Two Rights - The worst thing Dickey Betts ever did.

Y'all?

I love to do these.

Here's mine;

1) Louisiana Lou and Three Card Monty John (I don't know WHAT they were thinking)
2) Crazy Love (I know a lot of people like this song but damnit, I think it sucks)
3) Sarod & Sarod (I never understood that either)
4) Two Rights...certainly made a wrong
5) Kamma Lay (Alright, I'm gonna get crucified for this, but, honestly, I can't stand this song. Rueben Blades may be a really great Latino singer but he just doesn't do it for me. I have listened to this album throughly, and I understand what the liner notes say about opening up your soul to truly hear the music, but this song stinks. Instrumentally I do like it, but the singing ties my spine into a knot.)

Peace

I kind of like Louisianna Lou and Three Card Monty John - largely because it puts me in mind of Rosemary, Lilly, and the Jack of Hearts (Dylan), a real fun song to sing and play.

I'm trying to get approval (haven't heard anything back yet, maybe it's time to renew my request) from official sources to use the opening flourish and main riff of "Bad Little Doogie" as the background music for a web site I'm designing. I love this tune, so I have to disagree with it's nomination as a clunker. I dig a whole lot of what the Mule does (some things I'm neutral on), but if somebody dropped out of the sky and asked me, "Who is this Government Mule?" that would probably be the first tune I played for them.

I haven't heard some of the 'real bad' stuff (Allman and Woman, the Arista albums), but Crazy Love wins going away. Sweet Mama, as mentioned earlier. There aren't really many other songs I don't like hearing... none from the dTb spring to mind. I'm a little tired of Soulshine, mostly because the Mule does it so much these days, but I don't dislike it. Actually, they seem to be playing it less often, and likewise for the ABB, so that's all good.

I'm going to have to strenously disagree with kindof blue about Kammalay! As far as Bad Little Doggie goes, it's certainly not my favorite Mule tune. It kind of has that "Just Got Paid Today" feel. My only criticism would be that Warren insists on playing it at every show--immediately following Thorazine Shuffle, Blind Man in the Dark, and immediately preceding the cursed Soulshine. Oh, and Lousiana Lou is definitely the most ridiculous song ever played by any band!

Ah, somebody else noticed that. Warren has said that Bad Little Doggie was the only song on LBI that they wrote in the studio; I've often wondered if it grew out of a Just Got Paid jam.

Every song and I mean "every song" on Reach ForThe Sky and Brothers of The Road kind of blows with the exception of "From The Madness of The West" from "Reach" if I remember correctly . I haven't heard these 2 albums in over 10 years and I never want to again. Hard to believe this was a band that recorded EAP and Brotherand Sisters just 8 or 9 years earlier. We all know the story behind these recordings - lets face it most of the eighties really sucked for music in general. I just remembered I wasn't too fond of Crazy Love either for that matter. I'm sure the band is embarrassed of these songs as well - I hope.

Peace

First off, let me say that I although I mostly agree about REACH FOR THE SKY & BROTHERS OF THE ROAD I actually believe there are a few great songs on those 2 albums, namely: "From the Madness of the West", "Things You Used to Do" & "Leavin". Everything else is pretty bad, although out of those "bad" ones, a couple would have potential if they were stripped of their 80's production and synthesizers, like "So Long". Perhaps performed by the current lineup that could be a killer song.

Okay I have a few I really don't like and one of it is an all-time favourite that I think people are going to be mad at me for saying, but anyway "Seven Turns". EVERYONE seems to love that song, so I repress my dislike for it. But there you have it, it's out. Here are some other ones I think are pretty lame, aside from the songs from the two above mentioned albums:
GOOD TIMES (DON'T FADE AWAY) (my top contender for worst ABB song)
LOUISIANA LOU AND THREE CARD MONTY JOHN
LET ME RIDE
MIDNIGHT MAN
DESERT BLUES
EVERYBODY'S GOT A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB
I'M NO ANGEL (the brothers did this 89 although its really gregg solo)
YOU CAN'T GET TO HEAVEN ON A TEN DOLLAR BILL

I guess some or all of these aren't really bad songs so to speak, but I think the cliche chord progressions mixed with cliche lyrics seems to bother me personally, because I don't seem to necessarily skip most of these, they just kind of bother me. I know we all have our own opinions.

Oh yes, and I LOVE "Bad Little Doggie". Although I have to say it didn't grab me right away. I took me seeing it live a few times to really like it. I noticed that George Porter, Jr. seemed to love playing that song!

How did change my way of livin make it on here. Maybe I'm just crazy but I LOVE that song. It really is one of my favorite Allman tunes. Unless we dont like it because it's a dickey song. I used that song to hook my friends on the allmans. I think it's one of those songs that epitomizes the allman guitar sound. But everyone has their opinions. Rock on everyone . -Will

I love "Change My Way of Livin'", too... I think it's a great tune with Dickey's 2nd best ever vocal (his best being "Everybody's Got A Mountain To Climb")...

Change My Way of Living is a great song! -- But everyone is entitled to their opinion. Like I said, as you can see by my list, I dislike a bunch of songs that people seem to love.

Indeed, but Chris still gets the flame award. BTW, Arista stuff notwithstanding, Sweet Mama gets my vote.

Edit: though special note needs to be given to the Key-tar solo from Keep On Keepin' On

I can't see where anyone who like the blues could put on Collectors Vol I and say that Change My Way Of Living isn't down and dirty gutbucket blues. I love that one.
Same thing though with So Long -- one of the ABB's best ballads imHHo. Again it's hard for me to fathom someone hearing those first few chords, then Gregg's voice, and not like what they're hearing. Same with Crazy Love -- I still really like Enlightened Rogues -- critics will say that it's an Brotherized extension of the preceding two DB & GS records, and there may be some truth to that -- but no way should they be embarrassed about it. Same thing with Louisiana Lou -- Chuck's solo to me is immense, so is Dickey, and, not to be politically incorrect but Johnny and Bill gave Butch & Jaimoe a real run for their money -- I mean the drums just pop in synch on that song! Can't imagine what folks don't like about it.
Ah, I like all of it -- Angeline, Keep On Keepin On, Maybe We Can Go Back To Yesterday, Never Knew How Much -- am not as familar with Midnight Man, Desert Blues, Heaven...$10 Bill & those ones.
I really like Gregg's Night Games too -- that was on a solo album, whereas Keep On Keepin' On, similar-sounding in its AM-pop content, is an ABB -- close relatives I guess -- ALL GOOD INDEED. Danny is awesome on Night Games, so is (OK, I'll take the heat, flame on!!) the synthesizer part.
