My original plan was to see Dickey Betts & Great Southern at the Canyon Club, which is logistically one of the better places for me to go to, and I am known there since I have photographed many musicians. As many of you know, that event was cancelled and I wasn’t going to drive 3 hours to the other locations in Southern California. Well, I thought about it and decided to make the trek down to The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. My day started off poorly – Lindsay Lohan was arrested in my neighborhood, so I awoke to the new helicopters starting at 1:30 a.m. and never went back to sleep…I took off work early, to ensure an early arrival. Even still, I drove for 3.5 hours to get to the Coach House, which was a bit unnerving…

After my arrival, things started to look up. Pedro (my hero) came and got me and took me to the tour bus to deposit my camera and lenses and then we went up to where the band and crew were finishing dinner. I met Mike and James – who were both ingratiating. I caught up with Pedro for a bit and then went back into the bus, where I met Andy, Frankie and Duane. I was given the coveted photo/all access pass, to allow me to roam freely! Andy and I were having a discussion about concert photography and I asked him if it bothered him to have a camera close. He told me I should jump on the stage and shoot if I wanted to, so I knew this was going to be a great night! The mood was very relaxing and everyone seemed to be having a good time while waiting to go on stage. Dickey came out, and I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially after reading and hearing about various incidents…he came over and I introduced myself, and he gave me a kiss on the cheek – I was amazed how sweet he is! My day had improved immensely!

I felt like I was in a pre-game team meeting with the head coach. Dickey reviewed signals which would indicate volume levels and various other instructions for the show. Everyone kept checking with me to see if I needed anything, but I was quite content, just taking in all the information.

Showtime – the band was to go on at 9:45 p.m. and everyone headed towards the stage. I did not want to walk in with the band – that seemed a bit odd to me, so I asked Dickey if I could go in first to check out where I would start shooting. He said “darlin’, you can do whatever and go wherever you want to!” I laughed and went ahead and inside the venue.

The venue was set up for dinner patrons to sit up front, so it was difficult to get a straight-on shot, so I moved around a lot and several people were kind enough to have me sit at their tables to get various shots. At one point, I did go onto the stage to shoot, so that was really fun! I was wearing heels, so the security personnel held my one hand to help me down the risers (I felt like royalty!)

Dickey and company sounded great and played for 2 hours and 15 minutes. The crowd was very appreciative and it fun to watch the interaction. I’m the worst at reciting set lists, so I won’t try, but every song was amazing! The show ended with “Ramblin’ Man”
and I walked back to the bus with Andy and James. Dickey congratulated everyone on a great set and reviewed areas to improve. I collected my belongings and began my good-byes, having a lengthy drive ahead of me. Dickey gave me a hug and kiss and said “you are a true California beauty – you should come to more of our shows.” On that note, I left – the perfect end to a glorious evening with Dickey Betts and Great Southern!

Here are a few photos from the evening. They will be featured in a future photo essay on livebluesworld.com – enjoy!

Mitzi, you were actually my inspiration in making the decision to go. After hearing about your plane ordeal, I figured, what's 3 hours of driving?

Great photography Tami. Glad everything turned out so good. Now everyone will want to know what Dickey said to you, I know what it'd be if it were me.

Tami...Kudos!... You did an Excellent job of capturing some of the ambience and charm of that joint. The Coach House is one of my Favorite venues in So Cal. Nice Photos...

Thanx for the read as well, it's always nice to hear about the the little stuff the band does behind the scenes from a visual person.
