If you have high cholesterol, your Dr. will probably put you on Vytorin, Lipotor or any variety there of. Well, be very careful, they have all sorts of weird side effects. Statins are very heavy drugs that can take a toll on your liver, not that we have not damaged it enough in our youth. Google side effects of statins to see what I mean. I still have muscle ache after a week of coming off of Vytorin...................just wanted to put out a warning. I would hate to see anyone else have to deal with this too.

Judi, good post.

People taking certain medications should have periodic liver screens performed to see how their body is handling the drug. Don't skip these screens! Some drugs don't mix with others and some folks enjoy taking herbal medications along with regular prescriptions. Take care. Not everything mixes....take grapefruit for example, it is a no-no if you are taking certain hypertension medications.

Periodic liver/blood tests can assist you and your PCP with your medication dosage.

With all respect to you, there are many good reasons for statins & prescribing the right one for a particular individual, prescibing it in the correct manner & dose, monitoring liver function, certainly until levels appear in proper range,in the early & as needed or specifically indicated stages, having a doc willing to start slowly with the older & better studied statins, the actual benefit for your heart.....all reasons to consider them strongly if neccessary....your doc should inform you of possible side effects & muscle pain, weakness, etc, are standard problems, albeit rare, which usually call for stopping a particular statin. A creative, artistic, & well researched & smart doc will know how to guide a person through this until the correct statin or other drug is found(i.e. niacin--a vitamin). Finally,i would not rely on information regarding medical issues from the internet as being 100% accurate 100% of the time.... & the same can be said about the accuracy of all the research that is put out to the public!!!So,good luck to you Judl & statins may indeed be the wrong treatment for you,but they are generally well tolerated & effective. Peace & wishing only the best for you.

one nasty side effect of statins is peripheral neuropathy. (death of peripheral nerves)

I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

The important question is the frequency of any given side effect. A side effect of driving a car is death, but it happens so infrequently that most choose to continue driving. Trying to weigh relative risks is part of what makes for a good patient/ physician relationship.

I experienced PN a few years ago and although I never hit bottom, I saw it! My left leg died below the knee-- as far as me lifting my foot to walk. Had a $900.00 brace and everything. Posted here about it. Wasn't fun at all. Only a few GB'rs that hung out with me knew about it and I hid it well.

PN...you don't want it. I could command my leg to move as well as I could ask a frog to fly. Nothing was happening!

Are we old? Is this a good topic for the ABB forum? You bet ya! If I can make one person double check with their Dr. before they start statins, then I have done my job here. I love and care about alot of ya'll out there and where else can I send my message but, to ya'll through the forum. I hope that it is one of the reasons why we have it, it's called community. And, we have a good one. Love, Love

Yes, luckily we are getting old and with age comes ailments sometimes. There's no question that the Celebrex I take for osteoarthritis is killin my digestive tract, liver, kidney..who knows what. I take Nexium to heal the holes Celebrex causes but who knows what all the poisons we take does to our organs in the long run. It's a choice of quality of life in my case. At least I'll be a hansome corpse.

Red Yeast Rice, a supplement that acts like Statin drugs but without the side effects is an option, dropped my Cholesterol, especially LDL, along with excercise.Of course I am NOT a doctor but most people get excellent results.

I had an angioplasty and a heart attack (while I was getting the angioplasty/stent) and was lucky I had it on the table or I probably would have died. I was on statins for a year and a half and I thought they were going to kill me. After MUCH research and reading I have come to the conclusion that many purport and that is that cholesterol is not the problem, only a symptom of insulin resistance.
You just cannot say that everybody should have the same cholesterol level. The levels fluctuate with each individual. 220 might be high for one person but ok for another. Statins have not been proven to prevent heart disease or heart attacks. They only lower cholesterol. That doesn't necessarily mean a thing. One needs to attack the root of the problem, insulin resistance. I take cinnamon to fight that. The cholesterol ratio and HDL(GOOD cholesterol) levels are much more important than total cholesterol. I take psyllium and complete omegas (3-6-9's) for tryglycerides (which are a big problem for me.) I also take niacin.
Statin drugs are a multi-billion dollar industry and I think these powerful companies control the studies, the FDA and the doctors by and large. I have had medical professionals tell me they would never take a statin.
Since I became a vegetarian and began taking supplements I feel as good as I ever have in my life (my blood pressure dropped 15-20 points on both ends). The last person I talked to in the medical profession said that is all that matters. It is how I feel. We should all take our own health care into our own hands and be very wary of pharmaceuticals. That's just my experience and it works for me. All my blood work is excellent expcept for my cholesterol which is high by medical industry standards. I don't care.
Take charge of your own health. I know it might be an unpopular opinion but I think medical doctors are really good for about two things, trauma and diagnosis. Ande BEWARE if you go into a hospital. They are the 8th leading cause of death today. There's so much that can go wrong in one of those places it's truly scary. From infections to doctor nurse error and all points in between it can be a real mess.
Anyway, I'll quit. But folks, do monitor your health and do get physicals. Folks over 50, get that colonoscopy. And above all... EAT RIGHT !!!!
