That's right, Sly and The Family Stone, including Sly, is this Saturday July 7th, outdoors in Downtown San Jose. Average White Band opens. They e-mailed me a promotional picture of Sly and The Family Stone last week. An eleven piece lineup, 7 men and 4 women, and yes, Sly is in the picture. I'm sure there'll be several horns and backup singers. This is gonna be VERY interesting..........especially if Sly shows up!!
I'll be editing this thread or starting a new one on Sunday.

Read a comeback article also.

I am not up to speed on Sly. but from some of the comments I have a few questions.

Does he not show up for shows sometimes?

Did Sly and The Family Stone tour without Sly?

Wouldn't that make it just The Family Stone?

Enjoy the show and let us know about it.

The Family Stone performed here by the Bay at The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (a free summer concert series) only two weeks ago. Yes, that was WITHOUT Sly (I didn't go). I remember for sure they performed at the same summer series, again without Sly, last year as well, and I believe in 2005 also, although my memory doesn't serve me.

I don't know much about Sly either other than occasional tidbits that I've read. He's been inactive for many, many years other than a cameo appearance at The Grammies last year and, I've heard, a few recent Sly and The Family Stone shows. I do know from what I've read that he got seriously into drugs in the 70's and that was when he became unreliable as far as showing up for shows. I assume that is what caused his career to spiral downward as well, until he was completely inactive. What he was doing in the 80's and 90's I can only guess.

Here's another note on Sly, and you can take this with a grain of salt: He at one time had a reputation as a very badass dude. I quote from "Three Dog Nightmare", by Chuck Negron, the autobiography of Three Dog Night's former singer. Keep in mind that Negron is relating this story second hand the way it was told to him by someone who was actually there. Time frame was 1973 and it describes a drug deal gone bad involving original Three Dog Night bassist, the late Joe Schermie. Negron describes Schermie as "the band's first drug casualty."

QUOTE FROM THE BOOK:
"On that New York trip Joe ran into Sly Stone of Sly and The Family Stone at a club and asked him to bring over a quarter-ounce of cocaine. After Sly showed up at Joe's suite with the coke, he wanted to get paid. Joe called down to Tomasso and asked for
$3,000. Tomasso refused to give him the money. Minutes later, Joe called again with Sly listening on an extension. Tomasso was insistent, saying, "I'm not giving you guys **** !" It was a mistake.
Sly was a tough street fighter from Vallejo, a factory town on the wrong side of San Francisco Bay. He was dangerous. I'd heard stories that when he was on coke Sly would pull a gun on drug dealers and rob them. He had a couple of street-thug-type bodyguards with him, and they decided to go down to Tomasso's room to collect the money.
Sly and his thugs pulled Tomasso out of his room and then kicked, beat, and pistol-whipped him as Joe stood and watched. It all happened very quickly. Everyone was yelling and screaming. Tomasso was dragged into a nearby linen closet and left semi-conscious on the floor. According to Tomasso, Sly drop-kicked him in the head before walking away. Tomasso literally crawled back to his room and called for help. The beating nearly killed him. He suffered a serious concussion and his jaw was broken in four places. Later Tomasso told me he'd won a twenty-thousand- dollar judgment against Sly in court but never collected a dime of it, which made us all very angry." END QUOTE

I love Sly and the Family Stone. Its a shame that he doesn't play more with the rest of the bunch. He kind of reminds me of Miles Davis in the later years. He's kind of out there in left field, and he seems fine with that. I guess we all gotta live our own lives how we see fit!

I saw on tv that Sly gave an interview recently for Vogue magazine. He has talked about coming out of his self imposed exile. He is suppossedly a car collector and this is one way he has spends his spare time. I wonder how he has any money to live on.
