...just returned-- an awesome experience given how we fretted about the weather doom predicted by the weather people--but,while it rained(THAT WAS FUN TOO)--no thunder & lightning.Levon was in the best voice i've heard him in years--tons of BAND songs from all albums, all eras..also LEVON's drumming was the unique glue that held this largre ensemble together, including Amy Helm,Larry Cambell(formerly of Dylan & Lesh's bands---played with Scofield on the Phil Lesh-live @ warfield)who played in the most beautiful melodic way & was truly diverse playing mandolin, guitars,& violin in blue grass sets with his wife,Teresa Williams & great Blues along with WARREN's buddy,JIMMIE VIVINO,who was stinging & ferocious in his playing---along with great vocals by both Larry & Jimmie....the mood, the music was healing, emotional & incredibly joyful....it was also nice to see some familiar Woodstock friends who came to the city...the horn section was of Rock of Ages BAND quality---jazzy & New Orleans rolled together,,,Levon's mandolin work was impressive as always--i'm terrible with setlists but---remedy,tears of rage, the weight,w.s.walcott medicine show, deep elem blues(YUP, THAT ONE,DEADHEADS!!!! ),opehlia,i don't wanna hang up my rock & roll shoes,a haunting DYLAN/BAND Basement Tapes song i'm forgetting the name of,a song off Moondog Matinee, & many other rare gems...LEVON HELM IS A LIVING AMERICAN LEGEND & TREASURE & tonite he was huge

Palmhead--sorry you couln't make it....Bessie--hope you'll provide a review!!!!....the Basement Tapes song was Ain't Got No Home--a WOODY GUTHRIE song...Larry dedicated it warmly to the homeless people in Central Park...sweet of him & sweet vibe to the whole rainy & fun concert...still floating on how great that was...

You are so right. What a great show last night. I'd write more but I have to go out.

Anyone have a set list from last night?

I found a copy of one of the beacon shows was floating around. If I get it I'll over it up here. If anyone sees the CP show up for download, let me know.

After the Central Park show, Levon and friends traveled up north to Albany,N.Y. , to appear at the Hart Theatre, fri. night. We didn't have the ambiance of Central Park or the cascading rain, but we had an incredible night of music.

Levon's daughter, Amy, and her band, Ollabelle, opened the show with an impressive set of traditional and roots music. Their set list included: Elijah Rock; Jesus On the Mainline; Ain't No More Cane On the Brazos ( from the Basement Tapes, of course); and Cryin' Heart Blues ( another song The Band once covered). Levon's guitar player, Larry Campbell, joined Ollabelle on some songs, including Taj Mahal's Corinna and the Grateful Dead's Brokedown Palace ( Dadof2, did you get to hear that thurs. night? ) Larry Campbell is also Ollabelle's producer.

So, a great start to evening, right?! Then Levon and his band came on stage and played their hearts out for a little over two hrs. They opened w/ Slippin' & Slidin'; Ophelia followed soon after. Around this time, Levon intoduced Little Sammy Davis. He sang and played his harp for a couple of tunes. The entire concert was like a kaleidoscope of great American music: rock n' roll ; country; blues & New Orleans jazz.

Every player in Levon's band shone. As Dadof2 mentioned, there's a fabulous horn section ; the bassist, Mike Merritt, played stand up bass all nite long; and Larry Campbell was just amazing( especially on Chest Fever, when he interpreted Garth's organ solo on his guitar). And when he wasn't singing, Levon's wonderful band mates or members from Ollabelle would take up the vocals.

The supremely talented, Larry Campbell, also played the fiddle for a significant portion of the show, while Levon played his mandolin. They performed Atlantic City ; Man of Constant Sorrow; Rag Mama Rag; and a few others. Wonderful.

Levon and band also performed a great version of Woody Guthrie's , I Ain't Got No Home, this night too. And I loved Deep Elem Blues ( Larry Campbell singing lead on that. Dadof2,I wouldn't have known this song if it hadn't been for your post.)

Tears of Rage was played, with Jimmy Vivino & Larry taking the vocals. The Weight and a scorchin' Take Me To The River brought the show to a close. The audience didn't want to leave--literally. Even after the band left the stage, everyone was just standing around, smiling.

It was a happy, joyful, emotional and beautiful night of music. Thanks, Levon.

Thanks for the report. I run a small Levon Helm group on Yahoo. I was really hoping Levon would show up at one of the Beacon shows. Maybe next year!

Check out his new Live with RKO Allstars!
