Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi
June 21, 2007
Tulalip Ampitheatre
Better Than: String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, and Jonny Lang

Wonderful, strange show.

Everything I was looking for: Tedeschi's soulful, powerful pipes taking down her favorite covers, like the Stones' "You've Got the Silver," and Trucks firmly planted with an expressionless smirk (think about it), while he builds suspense between bent notes better than anyone in the business.

I still think Trucks' vocalist, Mike Mattison is all wrong for the group, and I was disappointed when I saw that he showed up. He's forcing that raspy soul, and next to the effortless way Trucks sings through the fret board, he ruins it for me, even could-be-great moments like "Soul Serenade."

Personal Bias: Watching Derek Trucks think is better than most rock shows could ever be.
Random Detail: I was surprised to find out that Tedeschi seriously draws the smooth jazz crowd. By the Way: The last time I saw Trucks and Tedeschi perform together was in Moscow, Idaho, at a stank club called John's Alley that serves dollar Pabst. The Coors went for $6 tonight. Trucks is definitely a $1 Pabst kind of draw, and the hippies in the crowd weren't quite sure what to make of the amphitheater in a box that it was.

Is it just me, or is it only people on the west coast giving Mike bad reviews?

Another biased read for me.

Eric, I'm having trouble seeing the pics... I think the site they're hosted on doesn't allow them to be used.

uh...disappointed when Mike showed up?! Geez he's only the lead singer of the band. *laugh*

Sorry you don't care for him much. I feel the exact opposite. From the first time I heard Mike's soulful voice and that fantastic falsetto I was hooked. I do not buy for one minute that his emotion is forced. Mike pulls from his toes when he sings. He can be gritty and down right nasty and then smooth as silk when needed. I love it when he's so lost in it he's singing/talking to himself as he backs away from the microphone when it's time for someone's solo.

Again, sorry you're not digging it but I have to object to the statement that Mike is all wrong for the band. From the minute I walk out of one show, I'm looking forward to the next.

To each his own.

It made me sad at Berklee Mass Oct 26th 2006 when Susan and Derek were up and we could see Mike off stage to the right just sitting there. You could see he really wanted to come up and sing

I feel like Mike kind of has a similar expression at a lot of shows I go to. He sits over there and I start to feel bad for him because he looks kind of sad. I'm sorry that everyone doesn't enjoy him as much as I/we do, but I guess there's nothing we can do about that. All I know is I love him in the band.

I think Mike fits this band perfectly and my personal favorites are him singing "All I Do" and "I Wish I Knew". No offense to Susan, but I'd rather just hear him on those songs.

Well, I'm not too pleased that Mike hasn't learned the vocals for 555 Lake yet.

Bring back Bill McCay!

Just kidding....I like Mike.

This is a very strange review! LOL Couldn't really tell whether he did or did not like DTB with some of his backhand comments. And I think he's way off base on the Mike Mattison comments! To me there is nothing 'forced' about Mike's vocals - I think he's a wonderful compliment to the overall sound of the DTB. And as for comments that he doesn't have enough power in his voice - well, I've heard him really tear it up with his voice so don't understand all that, either. And the comment about Derek being strictly a hippie crowd draw??? His statement sounded like DTB's music is something that can only be appreciated while wearing tie dye and twirling. I think that DTB's music is very mature ... something that is relevant to any number of 'types' ... they do cross over many musical genres. I don't see this band as strictly for the dive-bar $1.00 beer set. Very strange article...

I went to and enjoyed immensely the San Diego performance of this show. No1to run with, I agree with you about Mattison. This was "Soul Stew"... Derek and Susan. I went to hear Susan sing and Derek play. I can take Mike Mattison...or leave him.

When this tour has been billed from the start as the dTb plus Susan, Ron Holloway and Duane Trucks, why would anybody not expect Mike to be there?

And that's one song that I think most of us are tired of hearing. That is the soulshine of dtb, at least for me.

To each his own I guess. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE Susan. But I would not be happy if Mike ever leaves.

Sounds like this reviewer couldnt reconcile the natural evolution and growth of a band. I dont judge a band by the price of beer, but this reviewer seems to fall into the trap of stereotyping groups of fans, hippies and jazz fans, for example. In reality, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have a really wide appeal to a lot of people.
