Other than the WWE website, I've not been able to colaberate this, but if true, very tragic. While we fans enjoy wrestling for it's sillyness, Chris was a terrific performer...always an entertaining, no nonsense matches.

Hopefully this isn't yet another twisted plot by McMahon...surely he wouldn't.

Written: June 25, 2007World Wrestling Entertainment is deeply saddened to report that today Chris Benoit and his family were found dead in their home. There are no further details at this time, other than the Benoit family residence is currently being investigated by local authorities.

Tonight’s Raw on USA Network (8/7 CT) will serve as a tribute to Chris Benoit and his family. WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family’s relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy.

Well, this could explain why he did not wrestle at the WWE PPV "Vengance". He was scheduled to win the match and become one of the Title holders. Wow, what a bummer. "The Crippler" and "The Rabid Wolverine" as he was called, was a fan favorite (including this one) for many years.

Best wishes to the Benoit family.

Unfortunately this is no hoax. This is really awful news. Benoit was incredibly talented and I didn't realize "Woman" was his wife. She was a pretty famous manager in the 80s and into the 90s. Very sad.

This is truly, truly horrible. I wish it was a work.

One of the best that ever lived. RIP Wolverine.

WOW, I thought this was bs. I just saw him when I was flipping the channels on RAW. Maybe it was a dedication or repeat.

Though I never met him I knew he lived here in Fayette County not too far from where I live. We actually tried to buy a house, which as it turns out, on the same road he lived, but the deal fell through. It's a little eerie that I might have been in the middle of this tragedy. Anyhow there was nothing earlier on the local paper website but I expect they will have something soon since they probably have better connections with the Sheriff's Dept. than others. www.thecitizennews.com

Most of my favorites are/were the entertainers, Jesse the Body, Macho Man, etc. But my favorite WRESTLER has been Chris Benoit for a long time now.

What a terrible tragedy. I hope his surviving children will be o.k.

From the Observer:

Update on Chris Benoit

There is very little conclusive regarding the death of Chris Benoit, wife Nancy and son Daniel.

The three were found dead by the sheriff's department in Peachtree City, GA, after a WWE official had called because they had been unable to reach Chris after numerous attempts.

Lt. Tommy Pope told the Associated Press that it was being investigated as a homicide pending results of a preliminary autopsy report that will come out tomorrow. No gunshot wounds were found.

ajc.com has updated the story. It says murder-suicide is being investigated. Local ATL news is on in a few minutes and they should have more. Can't get to the Fayette County Citizen website-it must be getting pummelled.

WOW!

Pro wrestler Chris Benoit, wife, son found dead
Police investigating deaths as homicide

AP
Pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and 7-year-old son were found slain Monday at their Fayette County home, authorities said.

Updated: 1 hour, 7 minutes ago
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. - WWE wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife, and son were found dead Monday and police said they were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.

Detective Bo Turner told television station WAGA that the case was being treated as a murder-suicide, but said that couldn’t be confirmed until evidence was examined by a crime lab.

The station said that investigators believe the 40-year-old Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, and 7-year-old son, Daniel, over the weekend, then himself on Monday. A neighbor called police, and the bodies were found in three rooms.

Lead investigator Lt. Tommy Pope, of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, told The Associated Press the deaths were being investigated as homicide, and that the causes of death awaited autopsy results on Tuesday. Pope said the bodies were discovered about 2:30 p.m., but refused to release details.

The house is in a secluded neighborhood set back about 60 yards off a gravel road, surrounded by stacked stone wall and a double-iron gate. On Monday night, the house was dark except for a few outside lights. There was a police car in front, along with two uniformed officers.

Benoit was a former world heavyweight and Intercontinental champion. He also held several tag-team titles during his career.

“WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family’s relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy,” the federation said in a statement on its Web site.

Benoit was scheduled to perform at the “Vengeance” pay-per-view event Sunday night in Houston, but was replaced at the last minute because of what announcer Jim Ross called “personal reasons.”

The native of Canada maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling.

The WWE canceled its live “Monday Night RAW” card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

“My relationship with Chris has extended many years and I consider him a great friend,” Carl DeMarco, the president of WWE Canada, said in a statement. “Chris was always first-class — warm, friendly, caring and professional one of the best in our business.”

I wonder if during the course of the investigation if steroid use will come into play? I know certain steroids can cause the user to become easily agitated. Makes me wonder if this is a case of steroid rage?

What makes this so incredibly stunning is how totally and completely out of (real-life) character this is. When I first heard about it murder-suicide never even crossed my mind...CO poisoning, triple homicide, but never this.

Steroids could come in to play, or it could be a host of substances. I think if more people knew just how crazy, bizzare and insane the world of wrestling is backstage they'd be truly shocked. Not just the steroids, the amount of high-powered painkillers alot of guys take is stunning. Just because it's "fake" and "scripted" doesn't mean it doesn't hurt.

I just can't believe he killed his wife and son. I could go on and on about how good he was, but I don't think he deserves any more accolades.

Just so sad.

I too never thought of this as an option. But we as fans/spectators do not know what life challenges these wrestlers face. Whether it be travel they do to financial issues we just do not know.

One of my club brothers was a body builder, and he and his wife had a big fight one day, and he ended the fight, and his life, with a 40 caliber under his chin. We never saw it coming, and we blame the steroids. That's why I suspect steroids, from past experience.

It's true that a person's public persona can be the complete opposite of the private. I've gotten to know several indie wrestlers around the area here over the years and I've heard lots of industry stories, read the dirt sheets. This business kills people. No, i'm not making some notion that this situation is wrestling's fault. We all make our own choices and are ultimately the ones responsible for them. But the amount of dead wrestlers in the last 10, hell, 5 years is mind-numbing. This story is mind-numbing. Wrestling has always, in a twisted way, been the object of such disdain (It's all fake! How can you watch that stuff?) that people tend to think it's all just...fake. In the ring, backstage, no matter.

This is the list of wrestlers/managers/valets/referees under the age of 50 that have died since 1990 - 124 of them. 124!!!
