S.C. Warehouse Fire Kills 9 Firefighters

I remeber when 6 firefighters lost their lives in Worcester Mass, very tragic.
Below is a picture taken by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette and is not altered in anyway. If you look closely the flames take the shape of a firefighter. Also included are the 6 firefighters.

Paul A Brotherton, Timothy P. Jackson, Jeremiah M. Lucey, James F. “Jay” Lyons III, Joseph T. McGuirk and Lt. Thomas E. Spencer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Fire swept through a furniture warehouse, collapsing the building's roof and claiming the lives of nine firefighters in a disaster the mayor described Tuesday as "difficult to fathom or quantify."

"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley said at a morning news conference. "To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them."

Two employees in the building were rescued from the blaze, which broke out at about 7 p.m. Monday in the Sofa Super Store and warehouse, Riley said.

Overnight, firefighters, police officers and other rescue workers saluted as the bodies were carried from the warehouse.

"To lose nine is just a tragedy of immense proportions," Riley said. "To lose nine is just unbelievable."

Riley said the county coroner planned to disclose the names of the dead. The cause of the fire was under investigation, but Riley said arson was not suspected.

He said the blaze apparently started in a storage area. He was unsure whether there were sprinklers in the building.

Witnesses said the store's roof collapsed, throwing debris over about two-dozen rescue workers. Onlookers were hit with flying ash.

"It was like a 30-foot tornado of flames," said Mark Hilton, who was struck in his eye.

Daniel Shahid, a salesman at a nearby car dealership, said firefighters came in asking for towels.

"The next thing you know, we were carrying hoses, directing traffic, everybody from the dealership," he said.

Shahid said he saw firefighters rescue four people from the building.

"They were struggling. They were covered in black soot. They looked scared out of their minds," Shahid said.

He later told CNN the roof collapsed too quickly for anyone to escape.

"It came from nowhere," he said. "It was a standing structure and five seconds later it was on the ground."

Riley called the firefighters heroes.

"This is a profession that we must never take for granted," the mayor said. "There's a fire raging and they go toward it."

Prayers and thoughts to the survivors of these brave men.

It's time like these that make me reflect on the values of our society. On one hand, we've got whiny professional athletes and "entertainers" like Paris Hilton. Then we have underpaid, dedicated professional servants like William "Billy" Hutchinson, Mike Benke, Louis Mulkey, Mark Kelsey, Bradford "Brad" Baity, Michael French, James "Earl" Drayton, Brandon Thompson, Melven Champaign, who lay their own lives and concerns aside in favor of the safety and well-being of others.

People seem to think that men like these only go out and squirt water on flames. There's so much more to what these men do. On top of knowing how to fight a fire (there's a lot more than just putting water on a flame), these guys are usually trained in first aid and building codes. In short, they walk a long row for relatively low pay.

I knw that we have a few of these folks among our family - TandDan to name one. I am grateful for the sacrifices that these men (and women) make on a daily basis.

God bless 'em.

I don't see the firefighter in the flames. I admit I have a less than creative mind. These "miracles" are hooey, I mean 6 fine men die and we are to believe that the miracle is some flame shape? Same w/ the steel girder cross left after 9-11.

To give one's own life to save another is the epitome of selflessness. I know firefighters don't go into a situation knowing they will die saving others, but it's a risk they are willing to take, and for that, I have total respect for them.

My condolances to the families of the lost sons, fathers, brothers, and to the community who lost so many gallant men.

My heart goes out to the families of these fine men - this is a terribly high casuality (9 men at the scene then multiply that for wives and add for children, parents, friends, and brother firemen left behind ). Firefighters are angels walking the earth...God Bless them all.
