We are thinking of going down to Key West in a few months but are unsure of that destination. Any advice on good vacation spots? We live at the beach and want to go down to the islands.

DanB, Been going down to Key West for years, both work and pleasure and feel I know it pretty well. My wife and I, who live in Florida always stay at The Eden House (www.edenhouse.com) and always tell everyone who ask for a recommendation the same thing. Just pull up the website and see for yourself. It is located in Ole Town which is the best place to be, all in walking distance of great restaurants and bars with live music. Mike Eden is the owner and "Is a great guy and trip"! A Vietnam Veteran, he rode his Harley down from Michigan in 1976, got a room and now he owns the place! Maggie is the GM and his right hand gal, tell them you spoke with me if you want to. If you go in the summer months always walk on the shaded side of the street and if I can answer any other questions just let me know and I'll try. Peace Bob

Key West. We stayed at the Double Tree hotel. Very nice and they have a 20 person bus that brings you to there beach and drops you in town at the begining of Duval Street. Duval Street is like Bourbon St in N.O. Plenty of shopping and food/bars.

Grand Key Resort

The bus drops you here and you get a buy one get one beer coupon.

Conch Republic Restaurant

If you are facing this restaurant to your right you will see a little white house by the marina. That is where Jimmy Buffett records.

Duval Street Map
http://www.seefloridaonline.com/duval/

Got to see the Southern Most Point. Also catch a sunset at Mallory Square!!!!!! You can take a sunset cruise with all the beer you can drink for 20 bucks. Plenty of places to buy a cruise by the Hilton. Also shopping. BEST SUNSETS IN THE WORLD!!!

I know you mentioned the Keys, but if you dont want to go that far, I have discovered a fantastic spot - Little Gasparilla Island. It's just below Sarasota, and is abosolutely beautiful. It is truly an island, in that you cant even but a bag of ice there. The marina is a 20 minute boat ride. The island is small, only has houses and a few condos, no cars, no amusement parks, no restauraunts, basically, nothing but island! I have a 13 year old and an 8 year old and NOT ONCE did they ask about any entertainment other than "can we go down to the beach?" probably the best vacation we have ever taken.

The above all seem like nice vacation spots. My girlfriend and I have been dreaming where we should go this year. We have been wanting to go to some very nice expensive places. But we have found that we have so much right around the corner from us that we have never seen. I have always enjoyed camping, Susie and I have been dating over a year now, and she had found camping to be entertaining too. We went to my grandparents (deceased) house in Cape Cod. That is quite a place. Great seafood. Cooler weather in the summer. We enjoyed just sitting out on the porch and burning incense. A first for her was when I took her fishing. Well she caught more than me. She loved it. There are several day trips you can do in Cape Cod. Drive out to P-Town, take the Ferry out to the Islands.(Nantucket or Martha Vineyard) Many other little villages full of shops to browse through. Rent kayaks and paddle the Snow, Herring, or Bass rivers.
Cycliing walking. Its all there. We also rent the house, which is mostly full throught the seasons. (4th of July throught Labor Day)

Here is the house if anyone is looking to go to Cape Cod.

Well here we go again Eric. Man, I wish I was there. I have to stay back this holiday and do our year end inventory. 2 warehouses full. It takes about a week to get it all done. We will be going down to our house at Oak Island as soon as we are done...................

Eat a couple of Lobsters and buckets of Steamed Clams for me. I'll cast a few hooks for you down this way.

We've been going for a couple of years and stay at the Casa Marina. The rooms were recently re-done and the hotel is undergoing a 60 million renovation. Great rooms, great location and great service. Key West is a great vacation.

Thanks for all the advice. My wife found a package for Puerto Rico or St. Croix cheaper than any other place so I guess I'll just wing it based on her find. Hell if it saves money I can buy more beer at the Charlotte and Raleigh shows. This advice is worth something so ya'll meet me at the HTN tent and we'll make a beer run.

My younger sister has been living in Puerto Rico the last few months. Her husband's company her works for sent him there for 6 months. He did such a good job, they are sending him back
to the states early. My sister told him he shouldnt be so good. She says eating out there is very expensive. An all inclusive deal would eliminate that though. She did tell me that there beach front condo was leased for 6 months, so the company will have to pay for it the remaining time left on the lease. Shame. I bet the president of the company will be down there soaking up the sun after they move out..or some of their clients.

I like your plan of buying more beer in Charlotte. I'll help you in that regard.

That'll work. So you think your sister will sublet the condo for a week?

Rainy, you and I have yet to coordinate out trip together to Naples. Where was your condo again? I'm on Davis Blvd.

It may be hot but it's a little quiet there now and that's a good thing. 4th of July will be fun!

LOVE driving through this area of the country - very spiritual vibe about places like GC, Monument Valley, and the parks of So. Utah!

My vacation this year - meeting friends in Naples, Italy and we're staying in an old farmhouse outside of Sorrento. This is a dream-come-true for me! We'll visit Pompeii, the Isle of Capri, the Amalfi Coast...chin-chin!

Dan, St Croix is great. Have not been for 25 years but back then my friend's parents had a house there. The location of the only underwater National Park, Buck Island, great diving there and it's not too deep so snorkling would be good too. Visit the Cruzan Rum distillery in Fredericksted but Christiansted was a better place to stay then. Carry as many groceries as you can; they are very expensive there. Bring back duty free liquor; 1 gal/person then. Drive on the left!

Lefty,
Brother straight up here. We have a bar down here called The PIT aka The Pawleys Island Tavern that you and the guys would be perfect at. We could easily get a good crowd together with ya'll throwing down some blues. If you're making a road trip south Pawleys Island would make a great stop, hell I got room, rum and a Les Paul.

BTW you can relax on this beach we live 2 mins. from this location.
