Ice cream is killing people and ruining lives all over Boston. In fact, there is no greater threat to the city's public safety than these ice cream trucks of frosty death.

Well, not counting getting gunned down in front of your house because you decided to walk outside at noon in the middle of a summer day to get some ice cream. That's public safety threat #1 but ice cream trucks are a close #2.

Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina hasn't been getting his normal amount of beauty sleep because of those bastard ice cream trucks and will be holding hearings today on, I swear to God, "whether ice cream trucks should be forced to go back to tingling bells rather than bellowing tunes"

That's right. Today in Boston City Hall which is located in Boston which is reputed to be one of America's great cities, the City Council will be spending time debating ice cream trucks rather than say stuff like violence or housing or property tax rates or job creation or transportation. You know, because ice cream trucks and their blaring music of death is why Bostonians need City Councilors.

Though it wouldn't be right to rip on the City Council and then ignore one of its members that at least took the time to provide a great quote on Ice Cream Truckgate. Councilor Stephen Murphy on the ice cream truck noise-

“Yeah, it’s annoying. But not as annoying as gunshots.”

I cant stand that electronic music while the trucks circles the block. Sounds like being put on hold on a cheap telephone system. A new truck this year has the sound of a Horse Neighing and galloping. What a nuisance.
I believe in free trade, but it ruins the kids supper, cause they start circling like buzzards around 4:30pm. Besides the dangers of on coming traffic. Its just dangerous.

We have a county outdoor speaker ordinance here thats never enforced.

I don't know if any real statistics back this up ,
but I heard once that there exists a higher than
normal tendency towards "child predator" types
among these drivers than most occupations. I
trust 'em as far as I can see 'em ... but not as
far as I can hear 'em.

You're right about that freakin' music those Ice Cream Trucks play. I think the one that tours my neighborhood has played the same exact music over and over and over for the last 30 years. Makes you want to go postal after a while. Could you imagine being the driver. That would be worse than Chinese water tourture. How about rocking out some ABB or DTB or Mule from those Ice Cream Trucks. Anything but the status quo.

I actually enjoy the sound of the ice cream truck. I hadn't heard one in years (like, 25 or more), but one started a route in my neighborhood a while back. (Cue the corny sound track) It reminds me of a simpler time, when we'd all hear the truck from a few blocks away, then drop whatever it was we were doing to go and beg mom or dad for money (only like a dime or a quarter back then). The truck (and the music) seems to still have that effect. Just yesterday, I heard the music and looked out the window. About 12 kids from my street were lined up for treats. I didn't know that many kids lived on my street. So I walked out there and started hitting the little buggers up for change. They wouldn't come off with any, though. Little bastids.

Now if the trucks played a little DWYNM instead, even an electroinc version, that would be great!

Actually, Jessica would probably work quite well as an ice cream truck song.

The one in my neighborhood plays Turkey in the Straw.

I think "Little Martha" would be a cool truck tune!

When I was 16 I drove an ice cream truck for a summer. I've had a lot of different jobs over the years and that one ranked right up there with the worst of them. Screaming, dirty little varmints giving you 37 sticky pennies and wondering what they could buy. And the only days you get off is when it's raining.

And you're right about the music. If you think it's bad hearing it as the truck comes down your street once an evening, imagine listening to it all day, every day. I used to hear that crap in my sleep. Worse than a Rocking Horse/Soulshine continous loop!

LOL, I love you all, but sorry to say, if the sound of the good humor man annoys you that much it's a sign your starting to get old!
What next...chase the kid out of your yard for retrieving his ball?..lol, or better yet...get the ball and cut it with a knife!..
C'mon, go out and get a chocalate shake, or a cone.
These are one of the sounds of summer that I grew up with...It's the Ice Cream man..are you kidding me, how could you not love it?

Jimmy the Ice cream Man of the Bungolar Ice cream truck in the Bronx in the mid '60s broke down in tears when I ran into him with his grandchildren at Yankee stadium some years after that.
He told me those years, and us kids were some of the best times of his life.
Ok, maybe in the mid 60's there were not many pleasures for a kid that came driving around the corner 2-3 months out of the year...many other things to satisfy a kid now.
But try not forget what it was like to be a kid.
Plus, as you get older it is a fact that you lose your taste buds gradually...first at the tip of your toungue, which taste mostly salty, acidic flavors, and are the first to go.
The back of your toungue tastes the sweet flavors, and ice cream is one of the things that are most enjoyable when you get older...so be kind to your ice cream man...

That kid looks like a younger version of this one youngster who used to bug the heck out of me. Every day he'd stop me but didn't have enough money, wanted to haggle prices, just made a major pest of himself. He liked to hang on to the back of the truck so I couldn't drive off. A real brat.

So one day he tries to keep me from taking off by hanging onto the truck. But this time I didn't stop. I looked in the rearview mirror and didn't see him so I knew he was still hanging on. I got up to maybe 10 or 15 MPH and slammed on the brakes. I hear a loud THUD!.

The kid never bothered me again.

In Missouri one time I saw an ice cream truck with all sorts of Raggedy Ann dolls, GI Joes, lolly pops, posicles, candy canes and other kid attracting sweets painted on the side of it...the ice cream truck had in candy cane colored letters...

It's not a sign of getting old, it is a sign of hearing the same freakin' jingle for 30 years. For Christ sake, can't they at least have a few different tunes to play. I would rather they just ring a bell or something.
