There was a thread here a week or so ago about comments from a recent interview with Walter where he mentioned all the dates The Dan were doing in the Beacon, and how it might be a good idea to challenge the ABB for dominence. Well, I was at their show on Sunday night and as they came back out for an encore, he said it publicly, on stage at the Beacon.

I'm not going to remember his exact words, but it went something like; "we've had five nights here at the Beacon this year, and I know the Allman Brothers (big cheer!) also play quite a few dates here every year. But maybe next year we should challange them for supremacy." At that, there were a few chuckles in the audience, but mostly a loud cheer with a lot of folks standing and cheering.

As it calmed down, Donald took the mike and said "ah, ummm, Walter, ahhhhh, they're pretty big - you sure you want to do that. I'm not sure......" That was followed by laughs, and then they kicked into the next tune.

It was all in good fun, but Walter and Donald have a history for picking at a topic and sticking with it for a while. So I'll bet this is not the last we hear of this.

As to the show; it was a fine, solid performance - but nothing that would inspire the kind of passion in the crowd that any ABB show there does. They came out and played the first few tunes well, but nothing special. Then came "Bodhisvattva", and something just fell in place as they simply nailed the tune dead, raising the performance level a few notches in the process. Then Phoebe Snow came out for a great version of "Dirty Work" - wow - what a voice. That was probably the highlight, as the show settled a bit from there. Very good overall - but nothing close to a night there with ABB.

Anyway; here's a few pictures:

Becker and Fagen long ago were keys and guitar for Jay and the Americans. Jay's nicknames for them were "Manson" and "Starkweather".

There's a similar "call out" in a recent "Rolling Stone"--with similar comments about the ABB being bigger if a fight broke out. Perhaps they were thinking of the '90s version of the ABB? I don't see the current lineup doing anything except playing music together, not brawling...

I wouldn't read anything into it, it's just a goof by Becker IMO.

Phoebe Snow, huh? Wow. I remember a quote by her years ago where she stated how her vocal style was greatly influenced by Duane. Always remembered that.

Nice photos ; thanks. What a treat to hear Phoebe Snow sing Dirty Work ; usually Don & Walt's backing vocalists sing that song in concert.

I love the ABB ( best band of musicians I've ever heard ) , and I love Steely Dan. So hey , fellas, no brawling , please.

LOL!!! Typical Becker/Fagen humor!!! Thanks for sharing the pics! Have always loved Steely Dan - got to see them last year and they put on a great show (and were a hoot!)

Phoebe Snow is my wife's second cousin. It is good to hear she is still showing up for shows around New York. We don't hear about her much here in Denver.
