This past Saturday I was fortunate to attend the 2007 Margarita and Salsa Festival in downtown Midland, TX. This was quite a treat for me because we so rarely get artists out this far west. Funny thing was, there weren't any Margaritas being served and there sure as hell wasn't any salsa. LOL! Opening the show was Leon Russell, followed by Jonny Lang, and headlining the show was Delbert McClinton. I got some good photos of Leon and his crew, which also boasts Scott Boyer, III. I got a few good shots of Jonny, but only a couple of good shots of Delbert. It seems that as it grew darker, it became harder to get good photos. I don't blame the camera though. It had to have been the operator. hehehe Enjoy!

And my personal favorite....

Always loved Leon, that voice kills me, I gotta ask though did Jonny do a lot of blues? I had heard that he had gotten away from his roots and was doing some Christian Rock type stuff.

Leon is toast.

I once sat in with a local Dylan cover band "Hard Rain" here in St Louis - we opened for Leon.............I was psyched - it was a big moment for me........had three daze to prepare for it with just one practice and I'm not a huge Dylan fan anyway - oh well.......he whines too much for me.

They were a good band..... rockin' style Dylan cover band with a terrific singer who had it ALL going on.

It was nearly three years ago or so.

.........and it was a joke.

he was awful and his band was not good.

am sure I'll catch FLAK here but the crowd was leaving Off Broadway where we played and they were disappointed.

no one in the band smiled - EVER during the whole show???

it was very strange and very expensive - $$$$$$.

respectfully submitted.

Yeah, he was doing some Christian tinged tunes...some light jazz stuff too. But he did touch on the Blues a bit.

The djs on 92.5 KZPS DFW radio this morning were talking about Leon...kinda cutting up saying he doesn't have a face anymore, he's hair a hat and glasses.
I gotta say I really never heard too much Delbert except what was commercial releases up until the last few months and he has some great songs. I thought he was all boogie shuffle type , I'm really happily suprised on how good his music is.

A while back Carl hired Leon to play at the club and payed him 5 grand up front. When they got to the club, it was just like langman said....nothing but whine. Leon got bent because his dinner was delivered a few minutes late, a couple of the musicians went into the club for sound check and started ordering Johnny around like he didn't know what he was doing, Carl got mad and told them to get out. Someone in the band called the cops to escort them out of town because he thought Carl was going to try to stop them for some reason. Long story short, they made 5 grand and never played a note and Carl posted Leon on his website as *ssh*le of the year. And before this, Carl had been a big fan!

Now Delbert.....he's always been kinda special.....really interesting guy!

thanks for sharing Mitzi! i love your smile in that last shot!

hey Johnny Lang looks NOTHING like i remember!

and Leon Russell, well, i hadn't a clue who the heck he was till i started coming here. Someone mailed me a show, and i was amazed i had never heard of him before. he always reminded me of Billy Joel (i know, rookie observation and YES, i know BJ came after LR). I guess Leon is going to the Kirk West school of facial hair

Leon, and all in attendance, had a great time in Macon! He took off his cowboy hat and sun glasses and sang Song for You, to us.

Mitzi, you never said how Leon's set was. I'd be interested in a short review if you don't mind.........quite a few negatives from others here. Leon's playing near me in Santa Cruz next Wednesday night the 20th but I'll have to call in sick to go..........I wanna know if it's worth it. Haven't seen him since 1974.

I've been loving him, too long, to stop now.

Hadn't seen him since Hank Wilson and had heard he was doing a "Revue" and sometimes wasn't too good. Didn't stop me. The show was great!!! He's still Leon! He can play piano and sing like he always did, he just can't walk too easily. He uses a cane and a scooter (red!).

(I saw him Nov. 2006.)

I'm so bad at reviews, but since you asked...his set was fast paced, short, and sweet. One problem I had was I couldn't hear Scott's guitar. There was a lot of energy there from the band, but as most know Leon is very stoic. I think it was worth it, but what may be worth to me may not be worth to you. Know what I mean?
