Tedeschi-Trucks tour is all about togetherness
By Dan Nailen
The Salt Lake Tribune

Every marriage, especially one with children, takes teamwork.

Now consider the effort required in a two-musician household, with both spouses successful enough to tour constantly to the far reaches of the globe. Hanging out as a family requires finding the one day off from respective tours that everyone can meet in Budapest, Vienna or Des Moines.

Welcome to the far-from-domestic life of guitar heroes Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, who are joining members of their two bands for a summer tour called the "Soul Stew Revival," stopping at Red Butte Garden tonight for a sold-out show. Between her own tours and Trucks' work in the Allman Brothers Band, backing up Eric Clapton for the past 18 months.

Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks perform at Red Butte Gardens and leading his own Derek Trucks Band, there's not much left for family fun with 2-year-old Sophia and 5-year-old Charlie.

"That's why we're doing this tour together," Tedeschi said. "To be together! "The kids usually go out on tour with me anyway, but on this tour they'll have mom and dad, instead of just mom. So the kids are excited about that."

The Soul Stew Revival marks the first time the couple share a stage for an entire tour. Tedeschi said the timing worked out because she and Trucks are scheduled to record new albums in a couple months, and he just got finished with the Clapton world tour and "he needed to get back out on tour with his
band."

Without revealing too many secrets of what the "Soul Stew Revival" will be - Tedeschi, when asked, could be heard yelling "Hey, honey, what kind of stuff can I tell him that we're doing for songs?" - she did let some information out. Concertgoers can expect a little Derek and the Dominos, which Trucks played throughout the Clapton tour, as well as some Delaney & Bonnie, "that kind of era," Tedeschi said. "Some old soul tunes, some old funk tunes. It'll be fun. There will be some sit-down stuff, some old folk and blues."

If the feeling is right, there might even be a couple of special guests lending a hand to the band.

"Charlie loves to sing, and he likes to play drums," Tedeschi said. "And my daughter, she walks around with a little guitar and sings. She'll pick up my guitar. And sometimes she'll walk up to my microphone and sing, then stop and go over and play guitar, then come back to the microphone. Like she needed a break for a solo. She's a performer."

Ditto. Although a new ABB album would be rather interesting.

i dunno if the ABB has enough material, personally, for a new album.

the DTb has been performing all of those tasty cover songs for quite some time now, so IMO

i would also like a new DTB album

Don't hold your breath on the ABB album - I vote for dTb.

when you upload to the archive you can specify certain things... like allowing derivatives (which is what makes mp3's and allows streaming)....

I went to the show @ "4th & B" in San Diego last night. This was a close to a Gospel experience as I I've had at a R & R show in the last ten years. [4th & B, is an old Bank that was turned into a Music Venue. It is on the edges of San Diego's "Gaslamp" district just south of Downtown and I love the place]. It was cool to watch Derek and Susan interact during the show. On occasion, she would grab a towel and "dab" the persperation from Derek's brow or she might miss a que here and there, look at Derek as if to say "I'm doing the best I can here" only to see Derek smile at her. But if you haven't seen this show yet or it isn't coming to a venue near you, understand that even though Susan does most of the Vocals, this is Derek's Show, He's callin' the shots. It is Derek's smiling head nods to the Sax player or the Keyboards letting them know that it's "Your turn...solo on". The tempo was great, sound was good and "Anyday" brought the House Down!
Scrap-o-matic opened the show... and was less than captivating.

This show is on a Vine!

Cool article, Eric! Thanks for sharing! Would love to see a live Soul Stew recording happen but if not I'm guessing the new recording will be DTB (equal YEA!)

My only complaint is Mike is not on stage and singing enough.Susan could play more guitar on a song and let Mike in there just a little more. Maybe since its so new they are still tweaking but Mike needs to be in play just a little more. Also Kofi was not in the sound mix as much as I would have liked.

god it sounds like one big complaint. It was an incredibly enjoyable evening of music last week,LOVED IT!

I think Scrapomatic is an aquired taste, and I think Paul and Mike will agree that it is as well. It took me many listens to distinguish their sound and direction. It's traditional roots and blues music, and I always say you have to respect and understand that realm of music to understand todays music. "Know your source" type thing.
