Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Euphoric Satisfaction..

What an incredibly superb show!!

Well.....I didn't make a note of the setlist (I can't do it and enjoy the show at the same time like some people can)
But if a setlist gets posted I might be able to give a more thorough review..

I'm sorry that I didn't get to meet up with foppa and thejahpaul..........I talked on the phone to foppa after the show but didn't get to meet in person...next time man!

This show was a very bluesy show....not a hint of the Indian classical (which I thoroughly enjoy).... but then I've always loved Derek's playing in a blues context. We heard some Susan songs (Little by Little, Bit by Bit.......I don't remember the actual name of that song).......some DTB songs........some blues ... great acoustic set with Derek on a resophonic acoustic (Derek and Susan sitting in chairs!)......."It Hurts Me Too".........Derek and the Dominos' "Anyday" and "Tell The Truth"!...plus a saxophone player and Duane Trucks? on drums beside Yonrico...
At some point in the middle of the show I whisper in my wife's ear: "This is.......the feeling music brings!!!"..

Derek truly led the band .. a nod here... a wink there... he controlled the dynamics!
I've never really seen him play so many guitars in one show either....started with what appeared to be a ES-335.......to SG.......to at least 3 other guitars.....(no D.A. Goldtop!)

and after 2 and a half hours of bliss Yonrico says:

"Thanks folks and have a good night"

...........what if I didn't clap or whistle?....would they still come back for an encore?...probably. But how could I not!?!?!........I was happy to give a standing ovation!!!!

And for an encore?...Susan says something like "here's a song you may have heard the Allman Brothers Band play..."..........
It was "Stand Back"! (wasn't there just a thread here about Stand Back?!)

And for the second encore song (and final song of the show)........"The Sweet Feeling Music Brings"!

Heard some great music........met some really cool people.......
I burned a half dozen shows or so before we went....stuffed them in the cargo pocket of my cargo pants........managed to give them all away to some very cool people...!!!

There was one show that I gave away that is worth notating:
Coltrane 11/18/61.......

Here's who I gave it to and how it went down:

After the show.....out back/around the side by the tour buses..

Susan comes out and is signing autographs.....my wife chats with her and tells her how much she loves her voice! Then I get to talking to her (she's very cool and very down to earth) and thank her for the great show this evening and for coming to Dallas. I have a Derek photo that she autographs....
She says "I can do a really good Derek Trucks signature impersonation of you'd like!"....I say "Well....I'd actually prefer a Susan signature and real Derek signature!"

"and also", I tell her, "I made a copy of this old Coltrane show that I thought you and Derek might enjoy".........
She was very happy to hear about that and said she would take the Derek photo back inside to Derek and have him sign it for me...
In the meantime he comes out and she says "Hey sign this picture!...this guy over here made you a copy of a Coltrane show!".
So he comes over and we chat for a second..........he looks at the Coltrane disk, which I had printed a setlist and description for and put inside the sleeve in hopes of meeting him and being able to give it to him! and he says "Coltrane '61 .... that was the lineup eh!?!"

Indeed...

What a pleasure it was to be at this show and to get to meet Derek and Susan!!!

Maybe one of these days my wife and I will have 'em over for some barbecue and we'll pitch some washers (that's a Texas thang) and drink some ice tea while the kids swim in the pool (our kids and theirs are pretty close to the same age I think) and Derek and I jam on acoustic guitars!~

Okay.........that's probably not gonna happen!
But it'd be cool eh?
and they're welcome anytime!

........anyway I know this was a ramblin' review...........but I just got home and wanted to share my thoughts with you!

Soul Stew Revival coming near you?
See 'em!!!!!

Charlie

Great review and story. Tell the Truth & Stand Back, wow!! Tell the Truth was my favorite song he played with Clapton. And, a Coltrane show from 11/61, indeed that's the lineup.

I feel like such a hypocrite for not makng it to the show. Always complaining about the lack of our kind of music not making it to the DFW area, but then a friend at work said to me...." Hypocrite, hah hah, its not like you haven't seen them before 100 times in every city except Dallas ." He was right...
Charlie, glad you enjoyed the show and had a great time.
Still looking for Athens 03-31-06.....anyone ?

I think you'll find that the Soul Stew is different from other DTB shows.
I read that they worked up some new songs especially for this Summer Soul Stew tour..
Wish I could see them 2 nights in a row!

Have fun man!
And write us up a review of the show!

Charlie - good review. My fault that we didn't hook up. We walked in and they were already into the first tune. The night went by fast - they played over two hours? It fel short. Guess that is what happens when you're mezmerized. I'll pay better attention tonight at the Denver show.

To JP & crew - thanks for a fun time. Looked like things were developing nicely after the show.

Smilin Jack, Old Coot & CO - see y'all in a few short hours.
