I Love "Standback". One of the best versions, if not the best that I have heard at the Beacon was this year on 03/23. Oteil was rocking his butt off, Gregg singing was clear, the drums beating it out and of course Derek and Warren screaming on guitar.

It certainly help make for a great 52nd B'day that night. The whole show was one of the best of the run I feel. I told my son-in-law (who had to sit most of the night due to a torn ligament in his knee) to watch Oteil on Standback. I feel that is his song to pull along and he seems to have a grin on his face the whole song. It just seemed to get louder and louder as they went and it was like a freight train rumbling down the tracks with the whistle blowing "Standback" here I come! My son-in-law actually stood the whole song and rocked back and forth and at the break of the first set he told me that he loved that song now more than any other tune.

Peace,
JIM

I absolutely LOVE "Standback"...and let's be honest here, since Derek has worked his magic into it, the song has advanced about 5 levels since the EAP version which was already a killer tune. His outro solo is pretty special, spell binding really...well, you get the idea, It IS Derek after all...

"Standback"...Wow!...That song, sadly, has always represented a glimpse into what might have been had Duane rocked on...

I recall once upon a time,
Livin was so easy and I felt so fine.
But, my, my, my right before my very eyes,
Satan came with fire to burn me,
Wouldn't listen when they warned me.
A dagger in my back while she's calling me honey,
Wouldn't stand back, for neither love nor money.

Thirty minutes after my ship set sail,
She put up a sign and my house began to wail.
But, why, why, why I couldn't see it in my little girl's eyes?
She had such a way to fool me, Lord she had a way to fool me.
And I would ask the woman, "Can you find it in yourself to please stand back?
You ain't gonna rule me."

Just when all began to fade,
I reached out, threw the Ace of Spades.
I put her on a train to the Everglades.

Now that it's all over and gone,
Somehow I just don't feel so alone.
But, lie, lie, lie it seemed like such a waste of time.
She did not ever seem to know me,
But, now it's much too late to show me.
But, if I ever see that woman walkin down the street I'll just stand back,
And try to move away slowly.
Oh, yeah

Great tune and Trucks tears it up for sure, does some absolutely jaw-dropping work.....but 5x better than Dickey / Duane in their heyday on EAP ? Not in a million years.

Jaimoe's drumming on the studio version is so amazing.

It's always been one of my favorite songs. So soulful. Also one of my all time favorite ABB studio recordings.

Notice in the versions from 2000 with Jimmy Herring playing, he mimicks Gregg's electric piano part from the studio version on the guitar... I love that.

I agree Derek knows how to take this song to new heights.

There's a couple interestingly cool versions from March 1996 where Warren sings the lead instead of Gregg.

I love it too. One of the best versions is the one on the Gregg Allman Tour but I also love what Derek did with that on Peakin' at the Beacon!

Not to kill the feel good vibe of this thread, but perhaps if you have a similiar sense of humor as I, you will laugh and enjoy this --> A not-so-good version of Stand Back I found on youtube a while back...

It's a completely different song these days from the EAP version, just as "Leave My Blues At Home" is. It's a killer tune and Derek does rip it up, but I do miss the electric piano from the original.

I watched it and I still can't figure out if that's a girl or a guy singing (poorly).
