I found the following on the Bluebook at dandom dot com. Been lurking over there lately to keep tabs on setlists. Anybody else getting jazzed for the Steely Dan show this Friday in Portsmouth??? I was lucky enough to pull down Bob Uecker seats for this one!

"That said, if you ever want to be humbled by a team of musicians, go see Steely Dan. That’s what we did, catching SD at their two-night blowout at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Backstage, we caught up with our heroes Donald Fagen — the high-tech, bonus-packed box set of his trilogy of solo albums is out in July — and Walter Becker, who’s nearly done with solo album number two. SD will play at least five gigs at the Beacon this year, just a few shows less than the Allman Brothers played there in March. “Eventually we want to have a monthlong battle of the bands with the Allmans,” says Becker. “It’ll be epic, and the loser will be sent back to Swampfuck, Georgia.” Based on the Dan gigs, our money’s on Steely. “Wait, now the Allman Brothers are gonna beat the **** out of us,” says Becker. “When you write this, substitute Toto for the Allmans.”

ive been lucky enough to see steely dan a couple of time at greatwoods,ma.and each show pretty much seemed the same.very structerd, every note planed, and my bootlegs off them conferm that.not that it's a bad thing, but i would love to se them go off on a 20 minute version of"the royall scam.i have every cd on my ipod, buti still like the jams off the ABB.i think if they were gonna match night for night, the brothers would win.

i am a big steely dan fan and i saw them recently at the beacon...big disappointment for me although in retrospect i shoudnt have been surprised....the show is the same every night....a bunch of session musicians along with fagen and becker....no sparks,no improvisation..i say this as a big fan of steely dan...comparing the allmans in concert to steely dan is like comparing a heavyweight fighter to a lightweight...in other words no comparison

Becker says stuff just to get attention. Don't think he means much by it though. Not sure where Swampfuck, Georgia is but I'll visit. Love the southern States.

(Tryin' hard to stay positve )

Steely Dan has always confused me. Great musicians on all the albums with some decent songs but it stills bores the crap out of me. On album and Live, never really did it for me.

Now in a pay per view Battle Royale, I will take the ABB to kick their asses. 7 guys vs 2 isn't really all that fair. But all those hired guns would run to the hills and leave Becker and fagan standing there.

Big Steely Dan Fan Here. Comparisions Between the ABB & Steely Dan?... Apples & Oranges. Both bands are great, the main difference is the Allman Brothers Ability and desire to improvise.

Tried to catch a lot of Steely Dan at Jazzfest this year. Had a great spot at the Acura stage, thanks to Robslob. I found it to be pretty sterile, basically nothing more than you would get by listening to the records. In the baking sun that day, all I could take was 5-6 songs. Put that up against that tremendous version of Jessica that ABB played at Jazzfest and it's basically no competition.

Steely Dan is not even a real band!. its becker and fagan and a bunch of studio musicians. this comparison to the Allmans is stupid.

Most comparisons are dumb . But Walter Becker was being humorous . Anybody aquainted w/ the humor in some of Steely Dan's songs realizes this.

Coincidentaly, I saw Steely Dan in concert this past fri. night . It was the second time I had seen them in less than a year ( saw them last Aug.). I enjoyed both shows . I thought they were superb. As has been stated, they are very well rehearsed and don't leave anything to chance. But is that so surprising ?
Donald and Walter are well known perfectionists , and have used studio musicians on most of their albums.

I'm in my 40s, so I grew up hearing Steely Dan. But , I was a bit confused by their music, too. Especially, when they reached the Aja And Gaucho points in their career. I get it now. On the Aja dvd Donald said: ' I like jazz, and I like fake jazz, and I like fake , fake jazz'.

When I was a kid, I thought their music was cold and sterile sounding. Now I realize, there's great feeling in those songs, and a lot of humanity. Plus , now I can appreciate the sophistication of the music .

One thing I've always liked about SD's music was the storytelling aspect of their songs . That's what usually held my interest.Such a great songwriting team !

A lot of things fall away as you grow older. But it's fun and interesting to see what remains. And I tell ya, my love for Steely Dan's music has grown tremendously in recent years.

As said above; it's an apples and oranges comparison. I saw the Dan last Aug down here in NC, and as much as I couldn't fault the quality of their presentation, it does come across just like the recordings. But damn; they have written a ton of great tunes that are certainly much more than mindless pop drivel. Smart, snarky lyrics telling all sorts of tales, combined with top musicianship - if this is pop music, it at least pulls it off with class and style.

No surprise that concert-wise, the lack of passion and improvisation is most noticed by us ABB fans. But I'm still looking forward to seeing the Dan again next Sunday night at the Beacon. I just accept the fact that its a whole different experience. But they better start shopping for property in Swampfuck, 'cause its no contest versus the Brothers.

yeah, that Walt is a funny guy. But SD would have to knock the rust off their catalog in order to compete with the ABB. And they would still come up short by two names... Warren and Derek.

I don't think any band can compete w/ the ABB

Plus , as someone said , Steely Dan isn't really a band( just Fagen-Becker). So it's apples and oranges ( or peaches ).

Heard a conversation recently that they even ask the drummers, etc., to use a frickin' 'click' trak when they play 'live', let alone in the studio. Not sure who the drummer was...but interview indicated he set a 126 instead of a 125 to some song(Reelin' in the Years-?) and they bitched at him about it. Boy....that sure allows a lot of 'breath'' and 'spontanaeity' to any show......I like S-Dan's stuff for the most part but it's pretty sterile.

One must (or should) take into account the collective sense of humor of Fagan/Becker. I'm sure that they have supreme respect for the Allman Brother's Band. Personally, I'd love to see a double-billing. Now, If something were to overcome Dave Mathews a couple of days before the Piedmont Park show .... KIDDING!

...And if you read the initial post in this thread, Walter Becker more or less already conceded in this imaginary battle of the bands. What he said, was said in good humor and in good fun. ( BTW, Walter makes silly comments at every SD concert about all sorts of things . )

i think the comparison would be more like california oranges to georgia peaches.....SD without Jeff Baxter on guitar producing those 70's riffs is not the same band. seen em lots and while good, live they are not in the same league as the ABB
