HUGE Waylon fan here.

Honky Tonk Heroes is among the greatest albums ever, considering all genres. Most of it was written by Billy Joe Shaver, a good friend of our own Dickey Betts.

Huge fan here too and Honky Tonk Heros got me up dancing many times when life was a drag. Billy Joe is a great writer....and he likes my cornbread!

I grew up on Waylon and Willie. Got to see a festival in Eustis, FL when I was 11 years old that included Waylon, Willie, Merle Haggard, etc.

Love that stuff!

I always had a little fondness of Waylon, Willie and all those other rascals. I'm quickly becoming a Shooter Jennings listener also.

One of my all-time favorites hands down. Lonesome On'ry and Mean, This Time, and I'm a Ramblin Man are three of my favorite country albums ever. I listen to these once at least every six weeks.

For those that really like him, I would suggest forking out some money for the two Bear Family Box sets. Journey: Destiny's Child and Journey Six Strings Away.

i actually like waylon jennings too. he don't exactly fit the 'country' mold though. they's some old school rock, some blues, and if you listen close to some of that stuff, they's a jazz lick or 3 throwed in there. he could take a song & make it his own. but to my ears he was mostly like charlie daniels,,,,,,,,kinda rockabillyish. i don't really thank he never come to terms with the buddy holly crash though. that seemed to weigh on him. i heard him talk bout that several times over the years & he seemed to have a hard time tellin it.
i got this time, are you ready for the country, & another 1 or 2. he was definitely good and a hell of a guitar player too..................

Dancinggirl, if you like 'Lonsome, orny and mean', you'd probably like it by the guy that wrote it,Steve Young.

Young also wrote 'Seven Bridges Road', the story of a trip he once took to Hank Williams' gravesite.

Wjile we're on the Waylon deal, I'd like to mention another one of the Outlaw country folk.
Ol' Johnny Cash. The new format radio station in Dallas is playing some latter Johnny Cash, mosy likely off his last release. I'm gonna try to make a point and not trying to be funny.
If you remember The Beverly Hillbillies Show, at times when Granny thought she ws going to die, she sat and played an autoharp and sang the ol woe is me style.
On these latter cuts by Johnny, he is singing blue, and I mean blue. Singing blue like I'd never heard anybody sing blue before. Fantastic cuts, full of emmotion, pain, suffering and like he knew the end was on the way. Leaving precious life. His songs are so moving.
What a gift he gave.

I did video for the Waylon/Jerry Reed tour in 1983. Both were at the top of their game. They don't tour like that anymore. One of my "jobs" was to pick up a full frame of Waylon's guitar while he sang:
"Well, I don't understand, why they show my hands,
But not my face on TV."
The crowd would just go beserk.
I don't think I've had that much fun since then.
He opened his portion of the show with "Ain't Livin' Long Like This." and then proceeded to pound out that Texas country-rock for the next 60 minutes and not a bad tune in the bunch. Great band as well, Ralph Mooney on steel was worth the ticket price alone.
"I looked for trouble and I found me some,
Straight down the barrel of a lawman's gun."

I love Waylon but only got to see him once. That was at the Tarrant Co.Convention Center in Ft.Worth, TX in April of 1980. The album he was touring behind was "I've Always Been Crazy" and it is a FINE record. I would highly recommend it ! Waylon died on 2/12/02 and I saw Mule on 2/14/02. They did "Lonesome, On'ry & Mean." RIP Waylon Jennings.
