Whitewater, that is, not the S&M thing, not that there's anything wrong with that. Discovery Channel has a great feature on a first run of a big river in Buthan, called Adventure Buthan; I'm sure they'll replay it. I have a whitewater canoe and have run most Southeastern rivers. Anyone else do this? Sure need rain to get some river volume....

I grew up with a paddle in my hand. If your ever near Gastonia/Charlotte, we have a new US National Whitewater Center on the Catawba River. It just opened. Its right off I-85. Check it out. Its on the Charlotte side of the river on Moores Chapel Road.

We use to do Nantahala many times, The Uwharrie River is my favorite, its not whitewater, but a good 30-35 mile camping trip.

They also have a climbing center.

Brock, I love to paddle but just don't get much of a chance these days. Got the bug on the Nolichucky (college) and used to hit the Nantahala every other month ( work brings me up that way once a month). Lack of rain has really put a hurting on water flow on the Chattuga and Oconee.

I enjoy paddling on tamer waters, like Cat Head Creek and the Altamaha River in coastal Georgia. I like to observe the flora and fauna and take pictures. I use to enjoy white water, but after bashing my knee on some rocks ... I guess I'm too old to do the Dew anymore!

Rottinpeach, did not know about that center, thanks. Buzzy, yeah, rivers are mostly all below minimum volume levels. Trying to organize my slacker friends to do the Nanty (dam fed as you know). Is the Oconee decent? Anything bigger than a class II?

Yeah, did the Ocoee in a raft, it's beyond my skill level in the canoe. I like the slow paddles too, did a 3 day trip to the Okefenokee swamp in March (I think we put that campfire out!).

Yep, mostly rafting. Highest- Class Five. I've been thrown into grandma's washing machine in the Middle Keaney rapid on the lower New River, and at the top of massive class five Coliseum rapid on the Cheat River, both in West Virginia.

Guess I would classify as a slow paddler. I have a 17 foot canoe which I paddle around lakes and rivers locally (btw - it has a flat back and can support a little motor but I usually don't mount it). I've never attempted any white-water but it looks like fun. I like getting together with friends and doing a flotilla of canoes along the Maquoketa River, stopping on sandbars to picnic or have a couple of brews, then casually travel on to next destination. Relaxing way to spend a nice summer afternoon (especially if one of those friends has a multi-canoe trailer and will handle the put-in/pick-up arrangements )
