for those not bothering to click on the link....here you go!
A note from Dr. Squane:
hey now....yesterday i got to play duane allman's '57 goldtop that he used
on Layla and other albums.... a friend of mine is in possession of it until
it sells....it's been refinished over the years, but it's the one...the
numbers match, and there was a letter from bobby whitlock affirming it's
authenticity, plus pictures of him playing it...
so i snorted a line of dust and debris from the case

The pics are certainly interesting if the guitar is authentic, but there is no info at all about the supposed sale. What is the "gb..."? |

I think Duane's goldtop sold a couple of years ago for over $750k. Never learned who the buyer was. |

Here's the picture of the guitar that is allegedly for sale. You'll notice there is no pick up toggle trim ring.

Here is Duane playing a Gold Top. If you'll notice in this picture, the pickup toggle trim is missing, and it looks like the pickup covers are off, also..

Here is a picture of Duane playing another Gold Top. The trim ring is there.

I am fairly certain, after going through all the Duane and Dickey images that this is the guitar that Duane traded for the cherry sunburst Les Paul. If you'll recall, the story goes that he had pickups in the Gold Top that he liked and he and Kim Payne or Joe Dan Petty helped him swap the pick ups out of the Gold Top into the cherry sunburst. All the old pictures of Dickey playing gold tops, the toggle trim ring is intact. I think Duane had two gold tops, one was traded for the cherry sunburst and Dickey ended up with the other one. I could be wrong, and I wish I was in a position to ask the man himself. Regardless, this is a fine collector piece, if it is the real deal. ____________________
