ZERO with Steve Kimock are playing in Santa Cruz this Friday night for $23 and I have the weekend off. Basically I know NOTHING. I've heard ZERO mentioned on this site, and I've heard some rave about Kimock on this site. I've never heard either ZERO or Kimock. Someone convince me I need to make it to this show on my Memorial Weekend off.

I had hardly heard of Steve Kimock when I saw he was playing in my area in April. I was off school, similar to your case, so I figured I'd go. It ended up being an unbelievable show. 3 1/2 hours of absolutely amazing music. The band was very talented, especially Kimock who blew me away with a diverse collection of tunes ranging from dead covers and blues tunes to some crazy jazz stuff. All in all it was one of the best decisions I've made in a long time in terms of live music and I'm so glad I went...so...you should go too because you would see an absolutely great show case of music at its best.

I know Zero has been seriously reincarnated. I think know (and if you look more closely you'll know for certain) that it has Melvin Seals (excellent; Jerry Band's keys) Donna Jean (pass personally, but there are those who love) and I think Martin Fiero, who I cannot stand. My first time seeing Zero Fiero yelled and berated drunkenly at the good time crowd that they (the band) weren't Jerry and not the Dead blah blah blah. He never has been positive in the handful of other times I've seen them. Fiero was in Jerry's old group w Merl Saunders Legion of Mary. Robert Hunter, the Dead's main lyricist (Jerry's writing companion and others at times too), wrote many songs for Zero.

Kimock is talented. His effort varies at times; thus making him an enigma wrapped in a riddle. The last few years I've seen him, he's seemed clean and very sharp, musically. I personally think his talents are not used fully in Zero, that he more or less outgrew that band. (I've seen him in several other bands all others varied from good to phenomenal). But playing w Melvin now may be very dynamic and that in itself may make it worthwhile of the cost is not too extreme ($23 seems like a deal! go for it!). High ceiling low floor; low risk, high reward.

GO!!!!!! I have not seen him with ZERO. I have seen him with the Rhythm Devil's and The Steve Kimock Band. I have lots of his shows on C. D. He is one of my favorite musician's.

I knew nothing either before seeing them in Denver a few months back. Smilin Jack & Co was there. Awesome sound. Stream frequently from archive.org the Denver and SF shows. Big Daaay Melvin Seals and those monster B3 fills made the show for me. Some parts of a couple of the shows are slow. Kimock's son - one of the drummers has excellent chops.

I never did make it down to this show. Takes some motivation to drive the treacherous HWY 17 from San Jose to Santa Cruz and I just wasn't in the mood Friday night. Some other time, maybe. I've still never seen the band.
