I know this doesn't impact anyone here, but for anyone stopping by for a quick read.......if your heading to Waka, BE REAL CAREFUL!!!

I'm sure this is going to sound like a conspiricy theory, but here goes:

Last year Waka was over the top "security-wsie": there were license checks w/ "random" (read if you have that "look", a messy car [this is apparently a sign of a "drug dealer" who drove a long way to get there], etc...) car searches, using dogs, by the State/Local police at the interstate exit you use to get to the festival entrance; inside the festival grounds at nite cops were hiding in the tree lines using nightvision goggles to check everything out in the camping areas; they placed survalence cameras hidden in birdhouses on top of telephone poles to monitor the festival grounds (including camping areas); etc...

I actually liked the car searches at the festival entrance itsself (not the interstate exit): they were conducted by festival staff and they focused on preventing glass from being brought in (and then broken).

If they'd've simply posted "These grounds are under 24 hour video survalence" at the entrance, that'd be one thing - people could then have made a decision as to if they wanted to be on candid camera all weekend - it was the covert military-style action that put me off!

Flame away!

Peace!

BTW, make sure you find the lake (it's a lifesaver on those hot Kansas afternoons)!!

Thanks Tex from Texas Jon Slobber.
Krishna I went for a few hours last year and heard alot of stories about commando type searches, see through wall cameras, black helicopters, stormtroopers....mild crowd too,
KS HWY Patrol was testing some new high tech equipment for miltary purposes.
Hope its calmer this year. I talked to one of the promoters at an airport a whille back and he was still fuming over the tactics on the roads before you get to the festival grounds.

Just so you know, there is a nice letter from the Governor of Kansas on the Wakarusa website welcoming everyone to the festival. This festival is a pretty big deal to that part of Kansas, economically speaking, and I think the powers that be caught some flack over last year's vulgar display of force. No politician wants to be known as the person who killed the goose that laid the golden egg. I expect the security to be toned down this year.

And frankly, I'd be happy to be strip-searched to see that lineup of music North Mississippi All-Stars, New Monsoon, Railroad Earth, Widespread Panic, Mofro, Perpetual Groove, Papa Mali, Galactic, Tea Leaf Green, Little Feat and on and on.

If necessary, I think I could have a good time at this festival completely sober!

Welcome Krishna and family!

Rob and I and Erin and Tony were very well treated by the Wakarusa family last year and really enjoyed our stay. In spite of the concerns for in car searches, it seemed fairly calm to me. But, you have to treat anything illegall as illegal so be careful at all times. In the middle of a crowded concert field I felt no concern at all.

What I really liked about Wakarusa was the band selections and how orgainized the event was. It was like a mini Bonnaroo with much less hassle in getting around. The roads are paved in the state park so there is no fear of a mud pit if it rains. The lake was wonderful and cooled everyone off in the hot temps. Our booth was under the Harrah's Voodoo tent so we stayed cool the whole weekend. Lot's opf good memories and we are really looking forward to this one!

Hope to see some guestbookers there!

JNB

The people that get busted at these festivals are always the ones acting like jackasses. I know there were talks of all the security, but to be honest, I didn't see a single incident. Fact is, there are cops at every festival. If you're dumb enough to break the law in plain sight, you deserve to get arrested,

And Rob, I'm not going after all. We do have people to work our booth, but neither Tom nor myself will be making the trip this year.

Have fun for us, though - I know when that weekend rolls around I'm going to be missing it.

Hey now Rob -

If that's what you need to have a good time, I'm sure you could find someone to strip-search you ...
