Bet You Haven't Heard

I live about 150 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee and you would think that any kind of sensational crime would be like local news in our part of the country. But such is not always the case.

You've probably never heard the names Channon Christian or Christopher Newsome. They were two young students at the University of Tennessee who were carjacked, raped, tortured and murdered.

If you don't have a strong stomach you probably shouldnąt finish this column, as the murders were so brutal they're apt to make you sick.

Newsome, the young man was raped and beaten, they then castrated him and shot him several times. Then they dumped his body by some train tracks and set it on fire while his girlfriend was forced to watch.

Channon was gang raped over a period of days then her breasts were cut off while she was still alive, then they sprayed cleaning fluid in her mouth in an attempt to erase the traces of DNA, then her body was put into a garbage receptacle.

It seems to me that with the headlines and airwaves screaming about such inconsequential things as who is the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby and the bogus case against the Duke lacrosse players they could find space to report a brutal crime worthy of Saddam Hussein and his two demented sons.

But have you seen anything on the networks, The New York Times, The Nashville Tennessean? I haven't.

I wonder if it could be that the five perpetrators who have all been arrested were black.

If this had been white on black crime Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and their ilk would have descended on Knoxville like a swarm of angry bees. I guess the lack of TV cameras discouraged them.

A free press is one of our most precious rights and a selective press one of our most dangerous realities. To suppress or ignore one of the most hideous murders of the decade is asinine and reeks of political correctness and agenda driven formats.

Is reporting the latest lewd episode of Paris Hilton's privileged life or playing Alex Baldwinąs raging diatribe for the thousandth time really more important than letting the public know about a cruel and demented crime like
this?

Race should not enter the picture where crime is concerned and every decent human being should passionately condemn such a horrible thing as this no matter what color the victim or the perpetrators are.

Shame on the American media for letting such a violent crime as this slip through the cracks. I wonder what else they're not reporting.

Pray for our troops.

What do you think?

God Bless America

4th Arrest in Tennessee Couple's Slaying
Jan 12 2007 By DUNCAN MANSFIELD Associated Press Writer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A fourth person was arrested Friday in connection with the killing of a young man, whose burned corpse was found dumped along railroad tracks, and the death of his date, who was kept alive for days and raped, authorities said. All four suspects were being held on federal charges, Knoxville police spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Two were arrested in Knoxville and the other two in Lebanon, Ky. The victims, Christopher Newsom, 23, and Channon Christian, a 21-year- old University of Tennessee student, were last seen Saturday night while on a date.

The two had been at a friend's apartment and had left to get something to eat, with the plan of then going to another friend's home to watch movies. They never arrived. Newsom's body was found the next day. He had been shot and his body set on fire along a rail line, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Rich Knighten said. His girlfriend's vehicle was found nearby. "The second victim, they kept her for a couple of days and brutally raped and sexually assaulted her," Knighten told The Associated Press in an interview from Louisville. "Then they killed her and dumped her body."

The suspects were arrested Thursday and Friday. Eric DeWayne Boyd, 34, arrested in Knoxville Thursday night, was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking, DeBusk said. Lemaricus Davidson, 25, arrested at an empty house in Knoxville the same day, was charged with federal counts of carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in a crime of violence, DeBusk said. Davidson had been released in August from a Tennessee prison after serving five years for carjacking and aggravated robbery. The other two suspects—George Geovonni Thomas, 27, and Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 24—were arrested during in a raid on a house in Lebanon, Ky., about 180 miles north of Knoxville.

Thomas was charged with being an accessory after the fact in a carjacking and Cobbins was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition, DeBusk said. Court papers said Cobbins' fingerprints were found on a firearm magazine containing two rounds of 9mm ammunition. He had been convicted in 2003 in New York state of third-degree attempted robbery. Thomas and Cobbins were to appear before a federal magistrate in Louisville late Friday. Authorities declined to release further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

The victims' families asked for privacy. "The Newsom family has suffered a tremendous and tragic loss because of the apparent murder of their beloved son, Chris," Newsom family attorney James A.H. Bell said. The Christian family thanking the community "for all their prayers and everything that has been done during this time." "We have lost someone who was very beautiful and loving," the family said in a statement. "We are grateful for the outpouring of help that this community has given us and would not be able to get through this without you."

UPDATE: Search warrant reveals disturbing details in fatal carjacking
By: Kay Watson, Reporter WBIR.com 1/26/2007

New records show another woman saw a UT student after she was carjacked, but before she was murdered earlier this month. More details about the deaths of Channon Christian and her boyfriend Chris Newsom were revealed in documents filed in Knox County Sessions court this week. According to a search warrant executed January 24, police have talked with a fifth person who says she witnessed Christian being held.

According to that search warrant, a woman saw Christian alive at the Chipman Street house, and her account of what she saw helped officers target specific evidence. The warrant explains "she witnessed the victim's mouth being cleansed with some type of spray bottle of cleaning supply contained within the residence." On Wednesday, police went back to the house where Christian's body was found inside a garbage can. Records show police seized a spray bottle, empty garbage bags, carpet samples, and the lint trap from a dryer.

The search warrant explained the "Knox County Medical Examiner opined that fibers consistent with the carpet were found in victim Christian's hair." The warrant also said "the woman also witnessed clothing stained of blood and smelling like gasoline being placed in the washing machine of the residence." The medical examiner found Newsom's body had been bound and physically assaulted, then burned using some sort of accelerant.

Meanwhile, Letalvis Cobbins and George Thomas, who were arrested in Kentucky following the deadly carjacking, appeared in a Knoxville courtroom for the first time Thursday. Both the victims' families were in court again, leaning on each other and exchanging hugs. Both Cobbins and Thomas pleaded not guilty, were appointed defense attorneys and waived their rights to request bond. They will remain in jail along with Cobbin's brother Lemaricus Davidson and Eric Boyd. Cobbins and Davidson could face the death penalty if convicted. Thomas could spend more than seven years in prison, if convicted of helping Cobbins and Davidson evade arrest after the carjacking.

You know, after reading that, the people eventually found guilty of commiting those crimes to Channon and Chris should just be shot in the back of the head (or front if you prefer) and dumped in the river. They deserve nothing better.

The victims' families asked for privacy.

is why it is not all over the news. In addition to that, the killers have been caught.

I guess Mr. Daniels wants us all to know that the Devil Went Down to Tennesee, too....

no... but I doubt that had anything to do with the press not covering it... at least as much as all the other garbage they cover

I have heard there is a naked news cast somewhere... they could probably sneak a story in and nobody would notice

It sounds a little too brutal for your average car jacking/abduction. The guy was castrated; sounds like a personal vendetta. The woman must have been somebody else's girlfriend and whoever she left probably wanted her dead but wanted to make it look like something else so they murdered the guy first; especially making her watch while they killed him, they wanted to make her suffer first. Look into who her former boyfriends were and you will find a motive, and probably someone who hired these thugs to do what they did. Unless the guys who did it just got out of prison, it is just too strange. As to Charlie, women get abducted, raped and murdered in Iraq all the time. You won't hear everything that goes on in the press because the press isn't really free and has not been for quite some time.

people can speculate "why" and "what" untill cows fly, never knowing what actually happened. The two dead kids are the only ones who know the truth.

Cripes, I just had a heart attack (not really, but almost). One of those males looks so much like my step-son that had he been in a line-up (my stepson), he would have been in some serious sh*t.

Not to make light of this tragedy, but that was quite a jarring image for me.

Hope the five people (and any others) who were involved in this crime are procescuted to full extend of the law, and if found guilty, receive whatever maximum sentences that can be applied. In a way, it's good that this crime DIDN'T receive a lot of news coverage, because that way, when their trials are held then it's much more likely you can find a "fair and impartial" jury that hasn't been "tainted" by the news media. Also, if this crime had received a lot of news coverages, no doubt, you would have had the Johnny Cochrans, Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons crawling out of the woodwork trying to make a "race case" out of this. Last thing the family of the victims need is for this case to be "OJ'ed".

You know, death isnt good enough for trash like this. The sad part, the part that really pisses me off is how these animals managed to find their way back onto the streets after criminal convictions or for a lack of them. Strict adherence to punishment guidelines would do a lot to cut the crime rate from offenders

Charlie Daniels assumes some papers didn't cover the case because the killers were black, Gina assumes she knows why the murders were committed. Who the hell needs facts when you have geniuses like this on the case?

The New York Times hasn't covered the killings from what I can tell - notice fiddler boy only says he hasn't seen the coverage, not that there has been none - but it's not local news and it's not national news.

What the hell is this guy arguing? We need MORE sensationalistic coverage of brutal murders? Yeah, that'd be a great public service. Anna Nicole's death was irrelevant and Alec Baldwin's phone call was a waste of the public's time, but extensive reporting on a pair of brutal murders in Tennessee? Yes, by god, CNN should spend hours at a time on that. There's information we need to know here.

Meanwhile there is a significant Wikipedia entry on this case with a large number of source articles, most of them coming from Tennessee, like you'd expect. So somebody's paying attention, and Derek probably didn't have to look very hard to find the Associated Press story on it.

I liked Charlie Daniels better when he had one decades-old song everybody knew and that was it. Now he's got one decades-old song everybody knows and he thinks that makes him an expert political commentator. The sad thing is that some people apparently think he's right.

Well Charlie, I had a friend beaten to death , then set on fire in her own bed in Charlotte, NC. It never made the papers either and she was the sweetest person you would ever want to meet. She was black, and nobody cared that I could see except those that knew her.....

Would knowing that somehow make it better for you or more right? I'm pretty sure we could find another black person heinously murdered and never reported about and then we'd have 2 for 2 would that make the whole thing more palateable?

Jeeze, enough of the poor whiney white boy we've got it so bad attitude already....

I live not too far from Charlie and our paper ran stories on it. The Daily News Journal is owned by Gannett, so I find it a little hard to believe that other area Gannett papers didn't run as well. Middle Tennessee's newspapers are all Gannett products and the only difference between any of them is the placement of the same stories they all run.

I read this post yesterday and have been somewhat obsessed with the story. I live in Chicago and I did not hear about these crimes. After reading the story I find myself in a sort of stunned disbelief. How can one human being do that to another? Is this an example of pure evil? I don't have any answers. I was raised Catholic and I am opposed to abortion and the death penalty. This story has made me question those convictions. I want justice but what does that mean? Lock them up for life? Execute them? Torture? I don't know.

Maybe one reason I find this story so revolting and shocking is that I have come to have a great appreciation for the people of Tennessee. I have traveled all around the country and have never found friendlier people. I have been to Memphis, Nashville, Manchester (for Bonnaroo) and Knoxville. Everywhere the people treated me with hospitality and kindness. So it is that I am pretty shaken by this crime. As I said previously, I don't have any answers. Maybe all I can do is to offer my prayers to the victims, their families, and the entire Knoxville community. God bless all of you.

I can kind of see his point though, Marley. While the world doesnt need any more sensationalistic crime stories, this one seems different than a lot of the others in its brutality and number of people involved (my opinion). Im kind of surprised it didnt make CNN given the crap they typically report on. We can only speculate on the reasons why it didnt make the air.

Actually, it was hard to find. I looked in the Google "news" section and didn't find much. I had to surf the web side to find anything.

The public shouldn't be made aware of this kind of evil happening?? How the hell does a story about a young man being raped, beaten, shot multiple times, castrated, thrown on railroad tracks and burned in front of his girlfriend, who was then gang raped for days, her breasts cut off while she was still alive, forced to drink cleaning fluid, murdered, and thrown in a garbage dumpster not make the news??

The bias in the media, and I've said this a bunch, is in what they don't tell you. If this had been American soldiers that had done this, Squatch would have posted this all over the place. No excuse for the lack of reporting of this article, except for a politically correct double standard.

As for what RedRider said, I agree to a point, as crime against Black folk does go unnoticed at times, But, as with that kid in Portugal that was abducted, kids of color do not get the same attention that white kids do, and that is a shame. Although not true here in Cincinnati because Black folk are shooting Black folk at record rates, and time after time the guy is lying on the hospital bed with bullets in him and he doesn't say who did it, and all the folks on the street keep the code as well. http://www.1230thebuzz.com/- Lincoln Ware- 10am to 1pm EST.

You couldn't be more correct Derek. I checked the Chicago newspapers and there have been no articles related to this story that I could find. That is simply outrageous.

It seems different, yeah, but is it? I'm sorry, but there are horrible murders every day. You won't have most of them described for you in graphic detail. If you did, this one might or might not stick out, and you would lose your lunch in the process anyway.

Ah, but why speculate when we can assume it's the liberal media covering it up? This is more fun.

Tell me why I, as somebody living in New York, need to know about this crime. You usually play at being worldly, I'm not buying this from you. At my last job, I had to write about this guy once or twice. http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/ny-licove0819,0,2500903.story [He beheaded his neighbor and cut up her body for no particular reason, and was arrested while driving around with her head in the trunk.] This happened about ten miles from the communities I covered - quite a bit closer than New York is to Tennessee - and there was barely any connection to my coverage area and little reason to write about it.

This is the same game good ol' Chuck is playing, so it doesn't need repetition. The New York Post hasn't covered this story either. You want to accuse Rupert Murdoch of liberal bias, be my guest.
quote:
The bias in the media, and I've said this a bunch, is in what they don't tell you.

Right. For example, Charlie Daniels didn't tell you how many murders in America don't get national attention. Very few of them do. We need to know about this one because it's REALLY disgusting, and the only reason anybody wouldn't want to report on it is "reverse racism?" I don't buy it, sorry.
quote:
If this had been American soldiers that had done this, Squatch would have posted this all over the place.

And if vegans or Ted Kennedy had done it, YOU would have posted it all over the place.

My memory is having, by the way, but I seem to recall that when a black former running back was accused of killing his wife, it did get some minor amount of press coverage.

The bizarre part is that Charlie Daniels, Ph.D. from opinions are like **** s college, is insisting this deserves attention because some black people killed a white person for once instead of killing each other as God intended. Not that I would ever suggest a guy like Charlie Daniels is afraid or suspicious of black people , but...

Oops.

I'm not trying to accuse anybody other than Charlie Daniels of anything, but I think people's response to this story (not just on this site) is odd. When Lacy Pedersen was killed - although that crime got little attention because a white woman was the victim - did anybody here say "Yes, please, cover this more?" Has anyone said that about Natalee Holloway, Chandra Levy, or any number of other white women who have died in one circumstance or another in recent years? Have commentators been falling over one other to talk about how we the public need to know all about those crimes? People wanted Gary Condit to come clean about Chandra Levy, but I heard a lot more of "Why is the media wasting our time with this crap?" Why is this case different? Do people feel like something dangerous is being hidden from them? And if so, why?

I'd like to ask Chuck D. Not Charlie Daniels, I mean the Chuck D I have some respect for. But I think I have a rough idea what he'd say.

Well Marley, I am not a geinus but most people understand, if a guy was molested he would strike out against another guy in rage and anger. People hear stories all the time about the guys being raped in prison; but the attackers don't cut anybody's testicles off. If you had a deranged man full of rage, he might rape the guy then slit his throat or put a bullet in him; but making the woman watch that before they went off on her seems to make it personal towards her. Especially because if the guy was just into taking out rage on another man there would have been no reason to rape and mutilate her, take it out on the guy, put a bullet in him, maybe rape her just because she was there but there would be no reason to mutilate her also. Mutilating both of them tries to make it look like what someone wants a serial murderer type to look like, but they went to too much trouble to try to destroy the bodies and serial murderers don't bother with that and yes I got an A+ in abnormal psychology in college!

My memory is having, by the way, but I seem to recall that when a black former running back was accused of killing his wife, it did get some minor amount of press coverage.

He was a nationally known celebrity, for crying out loud.

Huh???

I'm not trying to accuse anybody other than Charlie Daniels of anything, but I think people's response to this story (not just on this site) is odd. When Lacy Pedersen was killed - although that crime got little attention because a white woman was the victim - did anybody here say "Yes, please, cover this more?"

In your opinion, that story only got a "little attention???" It was all over the place. What are you smoking tonight??

quote:
The bizarre part is that Charlie Daniels, Ph.D. from opinions are like **** s college, is insisting this deserves attention because some black people killed a white person for once instead of killing each other as God intended. Not that I would ever suggest a guy like Charlie Daniels is afraid or suspicious of black people , but...

Marley.....a question...what the hell are you talking about??

I remember tour where Charlie had five or six Black folks in his band. That isn't the point. If anything, it sounds like a prejudice based on stereotype on your part when it comes from folks down south, or inbetween flyover country, or whatever it is your hinting at.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----

..............It seems different, yeah, but is it? I'm sorry, but there are horrible murders every day. You won't have most of them described for you in graphic detail. If you did, this one might or might not stick out,

Marley, other than VT, when was the last time a murder this aggravated happened, and where??

quote:
I'd like to ask Chuck D. Not Charlie Daniels, I mean the Chuck D I have some respect for. But I think I have a rough idea what he'd say.

I admire Chuck D. and have dug his work for at least 20 years, back when it was being thrown down for the first time. In my neighborhood PE was spun by both black and white folk. But now, oh my God, Marley is about to speak for Chuck D..

Please elaborate......................after you tell us why you don't have any respect for Charlie Daniels.

DH

So black people murdering white people sometimes get news coverage, don't they? Is it just possible there's an explanation other than liberal guilt or some other crap? Of course there is. I notice that you didn't take me up on my question about why this story would be interesting to a New Yorker. There were probably some nasty murders in New York the same day.

You're not familiar with understatement, I see. Big surprise.

I'm talking about nobody but Charlie Daniels, and I made that clear, so spare me your attempts to cook up an accusation of stereotyping. And I've seen the "some of my best friends are black" thing before. No sale. I'm wondering why Charlie thinks it's so vital that everybody know about this murder.

Marley, other than VT, when was the last time a murder this aggravated happened, and where??

This is a stupid question. My entire point is that lots of terrible murders happen without the nation at large hearing about it, so how am I supposed to name a killing that I didn't hear about?
Other than the example that happened last month that got a lot of coverage? I don't know. That's the point. Gross murders happen all the time, some are covered nationally, some aren't. Evan Marshall, the guy I mentioned, did not get any national attention that I am aware of. (He was white and so was the retired teacher he killed.) You want to say this story is more gruesome? Go for it. But murdering, beheading and dismembering a retired teacher and driving around with her head in your car is pretty bad, and I don't think anyone outside of New York was interested. Where was Charlie Daniels on that one? Maybe he couldn't think of a way to drag Jesse Jackson's name into it.

The point, if it's somehow failed to become clear to you, is that the "liberal guilt coverup" explanation is made up. It sounds good to you, but that's about all it has going for it. As I mentioned, conservative national papers aren't covering this either.

quote:
But now, oh my God, Marley is about to speak for Chuck D..

I forgot only you are allowed to speak for black people, because you've had black friends and been in jail and whatever your line about that was. Cracked everybody up, as I recall.
Anyway, joking reference to Chuck D aside, I said what I wanted to say. I'm suspicious of why people complain about sensationalist media coverage all the time, but now, a story about a black gang killing two white people has some posters asking for sensationalist media coverage.
quote:

I don't respect Charlie Daniels because he's an idiot. Period. His opinions about this case are about as interesting to me as the opinions of anybody else who had a hit song in 1979, like the Bee Gees and Donna Summer. But most of those artists have the sense to keep their mouths shut; Charlie Daniels thinks he's making the world a better place by telling us about the dangerous liberal media. You know how people say Sheryl Crow sounded when she said the thing about toilet paper? That's Charlie Daniels, except he's done it over and over again the last few years.
