I am just back from the PO on Canal Street to mail my last 2 packages before the Orwellian regime takes over on Monday.

I showed the page from the usps.com. here is the URL for "shaped-based" mailing that will go into effect on Monday.

http://www.usps.com/prices/prices_shape.htm

While on line I spoke to an employee and showed her the printout. she first said large envelope but when i explained that they were cds and fragile and not "bendable" she then said oh yeah package then. when i asked her to speak to a supervisor to get confirmation, she told me to go to the window and ask there which was where i was going to mail my last 2 packages before the rate increase.

The lady was clueless when i showed it to her and explained. i told her that a lot of my trading buddies are very interested to know what is going to happen. I asked her to ask someone there who might know. well she told me when she came back after about 5 minutes that after talking to 4 different people that yes it would be package. She told me the mail gets sorted by computer but she still didn't know how they would handle our precious "fragile packages".

so read it and weep. all packages will be $1.13 for the first ounce. worse they had no clue if there would even ever be a $1.13 stamp and they had no .17's and didnt know when those would be available. so that means alot of waiting in line for alot of people unless we put a bunch of 41's on (which i bet is what the PO wants in the short run.) then when you add the price of discs, sleeves and bubble mailers which I predict will have to be in newer shape we are in for a huge increase in trading and doing B&p's. When I do B&p's for people from now on I will give them the option of using 1 mailer and including correct postage in stamps and a return address label, either paper to be taped on or a sticker. We may have to go buy those too!

all in all it sucks and all this has ruined an otherwise nice day. i hope to find a local network of people like Eileen to trade with in person. any NYC peach heads out there want to trade, do burn and returns and the like?
i'd like to boycott the PO almost entirely.
peace,
Ray

Ouch, this really sucks

I have similar problems here in Canada with our post office giving me different stories each time I want to mail a package to the US. They now have this "light packet" option which is the same price as regular mail, but some post offices say no, it a "small packet" so it costs more

For now I'm still using the old customs stickers on my packages and stuff is getting through, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

3 disc b&p within the US:

$1.47 inside and $1.64 outside. total =$3.11 in postage plus envelopes plus sleeves plus discs. you're looking at close to $5 as opposed to $2+ before.

thats why i advocate using just the bubble mailer and putting stamps and a return label inside. that will save you the cost of the outside envelope plus 17 cents. multiply that over the course of many B&p's and it will add up.

as for canada and europe i have no idea. can you buy us stamps in england struan?

Do we know enough to make a new list of prices?

How much would a one disk B&P cost? 80 cents 97 cents?

BTW I was reading an article saying that the USPS will be lenient in the begining. I guess I should include extra stamps in case the BNPer needs them if not send em back.

Makes me wish even more that they allowed electronic distribution.

Another advantage of one mailer is that the same postage going out
should work coming back. (unless they played really loud and the CDs
are slightly heavier with the music on them) :-)

UGH! This is going to become very expensive. This will move people more to vines and trades. B&Ps will go the wayside

We've already got a postage thread, or 3.....

My PO says as long as you use a 6x9 or 6 1/2 x7 bubble mailer it will be cheaper for postage. This increase is intended to hit 8 X10 business size letters or larger, I have confirmed with 2 different clerks.

Nine out of Ten traders will accept a B&P in one envelope, as long as you supply return self adressed stickers and postage. Check before you mail though if your not sure of their preference.

You can also fold the large envelope around the bubble mailer inside, trimming any excess if your close on postage. This also allows for easy access to and from a standard size mail box. Large envelopes are often folded by carriers to fit in the box anyway.

You may consider adopting the system we're using here in Argentina...

1 to 6 discs... 9.50$

More than 6 discs... 23.00$

Makes me glad I download most of my music now.

Except those bands that don't allow it.

If you factor in the "majic stamps" in circulation, the increase will not be any problem whatsoever

And remember, the Postal Dude or Dudette delivering it don't have a scale to verify the postage.

Oh, and if you buy and use a scale and stamps, you can save more on postage than you'll know.

My wife went to a training on this, and she was told cd's are considered "bendable" as long as they are in a paper sleeve that is also "bendable".

They're "bendable" until they become "breakable".

This sounds about right. We wont know for sure until we physically go to the PO and have this stuff weighed. My mailroom at work is all set up for the new rates, so I will be making a few trips down there in the next couple of weeks.

Well over here it costs me 1.58 to send everything I seem to have to send. That works out about $3.16 I think. Then you obviously add the bubble mailers etc.

I was going to start doing BnP's for folks coz i got a wee bit of a collection now (incl. beacon 07) but I didnt want people sending discs over here if the postage was too much but it probably isnt too much more expensive now! Plus the only way I could do it is if you kind folks sent $3 in bills and I just saved them up to exchange when I get enough...

I dunno if it is worth it for people cos it would take so long?

The postal rates always seem to be changing over here. we recently did a similar thing to you I think that whatever you sent started to get graded on weight and size and it is a hassle - especially when all you can get is large bubble mailers! But it hasn't caused too much hassle and to be honest I dont really mind paying it - after all if you can get a parcel from the UK to the a home in the US for $3.16 good on you!

I dunno about over there but ouir 'Royal mail' is in some degree of debt and various other failures so they every now and agian just seem to like to bump tings up! lol...

Firstly, I don't think we can buy US stamps - when I have done a BnP I have just included $5 and asked for any change in notes or for it to go to a good cause.

Secondly, I am from Scotland! ( But I'll forgive you this once! )

Struan, one things for sure, it sure beats the price of buying a cd in the local stores here and besides, where can you get this live music and quality for that price!! It is an inconveniece, but it still beats paying $8.99+ for a cd in the local stores.

Also, Ive signed up for a bnp over the pond and it was no trouble at all. So go ahead and do your bnp if you want to ....
Hope all is well over the pond brother

I've seen that done as well for return postage for overseas B&P.

I would not have a problem with the $3 cash to cover return
postage.

well, I may be cheating, but so far, so good.

I used to Automated Postal machine to mail a 5x8 manila envelope with 2 blanks, some foam padding and return label & postage to the very generous snuffy today for 58 cents!

I'll fess up, I was afraid to try the standard padded mailer inside a large manila envelope - and the lines at the main P.O. in Boston was looooonnnng (longer then the men's bathroom line at the Beacon during the break!)
