Considering the FORTUNE that has been made from the ABB trademark, and continues to be made (e.g. 10,000 tickets sold at Wanee '07 @ $150 a pop),

why is it necessary that fans of the band be asked to finance the project?

If you don't understand the reason fans would want to do this, then no amount of explanation would ever be sufficient.

The situation at Rose Hill has nothing to do with the ABB of today.

I can't speak for anyone eles but my involvement in the project is about showing respect for two men whose ability to make music changed my life and the sweet woman who has spent her life fighting for their right to rest in peace.

In the word's of Candace Oakley, "we are restoring dignity"

I can't put a price tag on that.

I hope I'm not speaking out-of-school.......but doesn't The ABB Inc. (Gregg, Jaimoe, Dickey, and Butch) have a tangible part to play in restoring that dignity ?

One would assume as much, but in the absence of the band reaching out and helping then it is generally assumed that until the heathens that constantly desecrate those graves come to their senses, something is going to have to be done by whoever steps up to the plate...namely the friends and fans of the two souls that rest in that resplendent spot.

You would have to pose that question to them.

It's easy to point fingers and lay blame but that wouldn't help the situation now would it? I choose to focus on the solution.

Tell ya what Dave,
To quote Roger Miller, 'I'm a man of means by no means', but I'll give a hundred bucks when you show me that The ABB Incorporated has made a contribution.

You've asked a good question and you've gotten some good answers.

It would be nice if the band and some of the other business people associated with them would adopt this project, but they haven't stepped up yet and have no legal obligation to do so. In the meantime, for a number of reasons, the graves are constantly being desecrated and the expense in caring for them has been borne by Candace and Buford.

To paraphrase Jerry, if one doesn't understand why the fans are moved to be the ones to give this gift so future generations will have a place to come and pay their respects to two special men, it can't be explained. And as Springer said, rather than point fingers, we're focusing on the solution.

May I take this opportunity to tell everyone there are a number of auctions going on in some of the threads here? Go check them out....they're all for the fence fund!

Actually I'm not sure what you mean, but I'm including Dickey in this. My stars! It would be "chump change" to the original four to erect that barricade. Have they ever been made aware that the site is vadalized?

Honestly, I don't mean to ugly..but what of Gregg? If you were a wealthy person and if it was your loved one, wouldn't you erect a barricade or have the bodies exhumed and re-buried in a private location?

Thank you for the opportunity to relay some information. Granted, Gregg could contribute to the fence fund, but any decision to move the graves would be made by the direct heirs and they don't want to do so.

As for whether or not the band is aware of the damage being done.....I don't see how they could not know since everyone associated with the band including Bert Holman, KW, the big house foundation, GABBA and HTN has commented about it in various forums and have criticized Candace repeatedly for her efforts to keep people from damaging the graves.

I have a counter-offer for you. You go ahead and make that $100 contribution and I will match it 2 to 1. Here's a chance for you to leverage your support for the project and make a real difference.

Bob

It's important that everyone stay positive & on the same page with this -- this is a chance for fans of this band to show appreciation for the years & years of pleasure they've derived from the music of Duane Allman & Berry Oakley -- hopefully any sour feelings about, why isn't this happening or why isn't that person involved, can be avoided -- the band's fans should concentrate on making this effort their own -- then perhaps good karma/cause & effect will bring about the further contributions.

I see it as one way we fans can give back to the music that has been apart of our lives. There is not a day in my life, music from these two legends don't bounce between my ears. Giving to a cause is something that should make you feel good. If it doesnt, dont give. If it does, do it with a open heart. Without question.

Also, I would hate having to sit over my loved ones graves due to disrespectful folks.

All of you who have written such wonderful things about the project and your reasons for supporting it make me more certain than ever this is a place populated by extra special people! Thank you so much.

Don't know why anybody hasn't mentioned the math here,

If the ABB Inc made all the money,

did Mule get paid?

how about dTb ??

Robert Randolph?

Well if we are going to wonder out loud about folks and their wallets, we could also wonder why 2 separate entities that purport to be about preserving ABB history; and have gone so far as to be designated as a non-profit, don't step up to the plate either....

Or you could just say enough is enough already and get out your check book too....

The answer is simple. The fence means more coming from the fans. It is a gesture of love and acknowledges the tremendous heritage.

That's my point exactly ! I just don't understand why family and very close friends of the the two don't lead the way.

I've lived long enough to know that before I whip out my checkbook, I want to know who is behind a project and why.

If it isn't important enough to Gregg and the other three, why should it be to me
?

I've wondered some of the same things and in the end I gave and will give again. I won't judge them. I've been to Rose Hill several times and love the music DA and BO made. I listen to them everyday. In the end you either give or you don't.

Nice Post, as usual, Stephen. The original question, while crudely put, is legitimate. Ultimately, I did what I thought best for Duane & Berry's memory. I have received so much from this Community - a little $$ is the least I can do.
