A friend turned me onto a LIVE CD of a singer/guitarist/artist by the name of Eva Cassidy. Sadly, I learned that she passed away from cancer at a very young age several years ago. Apparently her 'career' or recordings are now 'catching on'......I have not been so taken by a live performance recording since the ABB Filmore East as a kid. No use to describe what I heard....it's folk, it's blues, it's jazz, it's world, it's eclectic country--sounded like a frickin' ANGEL...literally! ....anybody else out there so 'taken' or familiar with her? She apparently was from the Washington D.C. area and performed primarily in that area before passing away. There are now several CD's out of her stuff both stuido and live....apparently lived in the recording studio once she took ill......

When I first heard about Eva, I was fascinated with her music and to learn she had died and that beautiful voice was silenced made me sad beyond belief. If you haven't listened to her music already, DanaV is right....you gotta hear her!

Beautiful voice - her recording of Over the Rainbow is astounding. So sad that she died at such a young age.

There has been a bunch of threads about Eva on here in the past. She was an angel. I didn't discover her until ABC's Nightline did a profile on her one night, and it blew my mind.

Eva Cassidy- February 2, 1963 - November 2, 1996

One of the most amazing singers I've heard easily is Eva Cassidy. She lived and sung in Washington DC, yet never was as famous as she should have been. In the 1990's she died of cancer. Three years later someone gave one of her albums to a BBC DJ in England, he listened, played the song on the air, and the rest is history. A voice from heaven. Mellow but beautiful, these were recorded at the Blues Alley in DC in 1996,the year she died of cancer.

Here are some Youtube clips;

Here is a good article on Eva from 1998 in the Washington Post,

You must have Eva's "Live at the Blues Alley" CD. Definely was a songbird, but unfortunately, no one really heard of her outside of the DC area until after she passed away. Sad thing is there are a lot of artists who are more or less "under the radar" and don't get discovered until they are no longer with us.

Derek.....YOU DA" MAN!!!!

I was stunned to hear this unbelievable voice. I read an interview with her manager where he lamented that he literally begged several recording execs to sign her to a major label and they refused...."Can't define her"....(Where have we heard that before?!!!) The tune...'tall trees of Georgia' had me in tears. I could not help but think of Brother Gregg's Multi-Colored Lady when I heard this song.....".....pine trees in the rain, it wasn't her day....". I played the "Laid Back'' CD for my gal-friend--who had never heard it in it's entirety--right after we'd played Eva's CD and she immediately felt the connection. Just incredible stuff. Folks....if you ever took a chance on something that someone on this site recommended....this is the one. If you don't like it....I'll buy you a beer at an ABB show SOMEWHERE....SOMEDAY!!!

I actually stumbled upon Eva by accident a few years ago. I was looking for some Danny Gatton songs( another incredible DC-area talent) when I came across a song Danny played and Eva did the vocals on. I was blown away at how beautiful her voice was. Then reading about her illness and passing makes her work all the more powerful. It's a shame she left us so early, but she left us her music, and I'm thankful for that.

I learned about her when the local Pacifica radio station here in DC played her music. In fact, I thought she was black when I first heard her. She was an amazing talent. And lost much too soon.

I used to think that female vocalists consisted of Aretha and then all the rest.. until I heard Eva. Good God, what a voice. Get some. You won't be disappointed.

Keep it going ...bro's & sis's.....I'm tickled that I wasn't just having a 'weak' moment. This gal was incredible....and I'm glad that so many of you 'get it'....

Can't believe it took me so long to discover Eva....

Voice of an angel. Eva sings Fields of Gold the way it was meant to be sung. She transforms it from a ho-hum Sting song into something beautiful.

"I know you by heart" never fails to bring a tear to my eye. The raw emotions are palpable on this one.

I thought I saw a headline, recently, that Eva's story is going to be told in film. I don't know if it's a movie or cable production. I didn't get to read the article at the time and now can't find it.

Thanks for the links Derek.
I was turned on to Eva just a few months after she passed away, and bought Songbird as soon as I could. This is the first time I've seen her perform.

"Live at Blue's Alley" is a great disc. She does a killer version of Stormy Monday.

Funny you mention it - I was just listening to her version last night. So good I replayed it 3 times. Amazing talent. What a shame she never really became widely known until after she'd already passed away. She was only 33 when she died. Way, way too young...
