If you go to the Quarter, remember where you got the shoes you are wearing. Answer is, on your feet. Trust me on this. Have a beignet for me; mmmm.

A lot of folks bring blankets and chairs and set them up early, to get a spot at the main stages. Might be a good idea to bring a blanket to secure a decent spot for ABB. The band playing before ABB, Cowboy Mouth, will most likely not draw a huge crowd, so it probably will be easy to set something up at that time. Bring sunscreen, a raincoat. Weather is supposed to be upper 80's and humid, with some chance for rain. You've got 3 days to work on your alcohol tolerance

Speaking of that, a few of us are meeting at Pat O'Brien's courtyard at 11PM on Thursday. If you haven't been there, it's something to experience in NOLA. If you want to try to meet up, PM me.

As little as possible but you will need a Hat, Sunblock, Hand towel or bandana to keep wet to cool down, Comfortable shoes and try to park in the stable area so car will be close to go take breaks.

That's about it! I'll give ya a call on Thursday

I'd suggest that each small group of people share a backpack. For my trips to the fairground, I usually packed a lightweight windbreaker (waterproof), a hat, a collapsible cooler (bring cold bottled water, then replace it with beer later in the day), sunscreen, and something waterproof to sit on. Unless you have a big group, I think big blankets and chairs are really cumbersome. If you're sitting at the big stage all day, you're missing most of the great music.

And bring lots of cash.

If you've never been, don't underestimate the quality of the fairgrounds food. Most of the dishes served are very good, and reasonably priced.

New Orleans, at the Fair Grounds Race Course.

The Crawfish Monica is one of my favorites too. I'd also recommend the Pheasant, Quail & Andouille Gumbo.

I agree with sunscreen, chairs, money. You will absolutely want to eat at the festival, as the foods offered up are unlike anywhere else. And, Cowboy Mouth might draw a little more than you think as they are a local New Orleans band. If you drinking beer, drink a bottle of water about every third or fourth beer and you will appreciate it in the long run. Outside of the festival, the best crawfish, and cheapest, where the locals eat - Sal's Seafood on the West Bank on Barataria BLVD.

Check the schedule and try and plan your day out. If you tell us what days you will be there, I am sure a few of us will direct you to bands that you might not be familiar with but are a must see.

Past that, here is a Jazzfest primer that I wrote a couple of years ago;

http://www.gritz.net/subscribers_area/features/neworleansjazz.html

Have fun!!

A hat and plenty of sealed bottles of water, for one thing. The Fairgrounds is flat as a pancake, and when that afternoon sun starts beating down, it can be brutal. Take any and all precautions to avoid dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke, and you'll be fine. The Jazz, Blues and Gospel Tents are wonderful places to hide from the sun, and they all feature great music.

And the food is VERY good The single biggest difference between Jazz Fest and every other music festival. Besides the suggestions others have made (I love the Crawfish Monica myself), try a Mango Freeze. Nothing cools you off better on a hot day at the Fairgrounds!

One quick tip that most won't follow---Don't drink alcohol at the Fairgrounds. I know, I know, but seriously, it's just not worth it. You'll end up getting dehydrated and sleepy. Save your heavy drinking for after the sun goes down--it's not like the bars are going to close or anything You've got plenty of time to get ripped in a club, where a lot of the best shows go down anyway.

When I was in college at Tulane, we always used to say "It's a marathon, not a sprint!"

I'll have to find Sal's Derek, thanks for the tip. Always used to go to Sid Mars, but it's gone. Deanies is great also.

BTW, the Grandstand building has air conditioning and real bathrooms. The second floor is a sanctuary, if it's too hot out. They also have workshops and interviews with performers, in the grandstands. You'll be surprised, sometimes it's a great treat. Half the fun of the fest is to walk around and check out as much as you can. I've been floored by some performances, from bands/artists I've never heard of, or heard before. The Gospel tent can be interesting. Rob, I'm with you on pacing ourselves.

Just a thought, we've done this before at other festivals. My wife & I and a few friends are going to put our blankets down together, at the stage ABB is playing at on Saturday. If some of you want to join us, we can block off a large area and know you are surrounded by peach heads and friends.
